For frequent frying, searing, wok cooking, or high-output burners, start by comparing ducted range hoods in the 600+ CFM category—but do not choose by the maximum CFM number alone. Broan-NuTone places heavy frying, searing, and professional-style cooking in that category, while also emphasizing cooktop output, duct design, and the installed system. The hood’s coverage, delivered airflow, sound, duct route, and local code requirements all affect the result.
How much CFM do you need for heavy cooking?
Broan-NuTone’s current manufacturer guidance places heavy frying, searing, and professional-style cooking in the 600+ CFM category. It also describes approximately 100 CFM per 10,000 BTUs as a common guideline. Neither figure is a guarantee of performance in a particular kitchen: cooktop output, hood dimensions, ductwork, and installation determine how much air is actually captured and exhausted.
Use those figures to narrow the field, then check the selected hood’s rated airflow and test conditions. Ask whether the stated CFM is a maximum blower rating or airflow verified through a duct system. Broan-NuTone explains that installed airflow can be affected by duct length, diameter, elbows, and the exterior termination. A large maximum number does not establish how much air the installed hood will move.
What features matter more than peak CFM?
Coverage and capture area
In most cases, the hood should be at least as wide as the cooktop. A hood that does not cover the cooking surface may fail to capture rising smoke and grease effectively, even if its blower has a high maximum rating. Mounting height also matters; follow the chosen model’s installation manual because recommended clearances vary by hood style and product.

Verified airflow and sound
Compare airflow at stated operating speeds and test conditions rather than treating an unqualified maximum as the installed result. Sound ratings are useful only when tied to a specified speed and measurement method. EPA Indoor AirPlus Version 2 recommends rated airflow and sound performance tested under HVI 920 or equivalent, and recommends a minimum 70% capture efficiency tested under ASTM E3087 or equivalent. These are program advisories, not a claim that every hood meets those criteria.
The EPA document also recommends that a demand-controlled kitchen exhaust fan have at least one setting delivering 100 CFM at no more than 2 sones. That recommendation is specific to the program’s requirements; it is not a universal performance rating for range hoods.

Duct route and exhaust type
For an exterior-vented hood, use the duct material and diameter specified in the product manual. Broan-NuTone specifies metal duct and prefers smooth metal over flexible metal. Long duct runs, undersized ducts, bends, and restrictive exterior caps can reduce airflow at the hood.
A ducted hood exhausts air outdoors. A recirculating, or ductless, hood passes air through grease and charcoal filters and returns it to the kitchen; it is an option when exterior ducting is unavailable, not an equivalent way to remove air from the home. Confirm that the chosen model supports the configuration and that the required filters are compatible and available.

Which hood style fits your kitchen?
| Configuration | What to assess for heavy cooking |
|---|---|
| Under-cabinet | Check that the hood covers the cooktop, fits beneath the cabinets, and can connect to an appropriate duct route. |
| Wall chimney | Confirm the hood width, mounting clearance, and path through the wall or ceiling to the exterior. |
| Island | Assess capture area and placement over the cooktop, as well as a feasible duct route through the ceiling. |
| Built-in insert or power pack | Verify that the enclosure provides the required coverage and clearances, and that its blower and duct specifications suit the installation. |
| Downdraft | Consider the layout and duct route carefully. Broan-NuTone describes downdrafts as generally less effective at capture than overhead hoods. |
| Ductless or convertible | Determine whether the model can exhaust outdoors or only recirculate in the intended setup; check its filter requirements and replacement compatibility. |
“Convertible” generally means a hood can be installed for ducted exhaust or recirculating operation, depending on the model and setup. Check the product manual rather than assuming every convertible hood includes all parts or filters for both configurations.
How to compare a 600 CFM ducted range hood
- Measure the cooking area. Record cooktop width and burner output, then identify hood styles that can cover the surface while meeting the manufacturer’s mounting-height instructions.
- Check the airflow rating. Look for verified or tested airflow and note the test conditions. Distinguish that rating from a maximum blower CFM figure.
- Trace the duct route. Confirm the specified duct diameter, material, length, bends, and exterior termination against the hood manual and the actual building layout.
- Compare sound at useful speeds. Review sound ratings alongside airflow, and check whether the figures apply at the same speed or test method.
- Choose exhaust or recirculation deliberately. Prefer an exterior-vented configuration when the installation allows it; if recirculating, confirm filter compatibility and ongoing replacement needs.
- Check clearances and local rules. Verify mounting requirements, electrical and installation details, and whether the project needs make-up air under applicable local code.
What reduces range hood airflow after installation?
Airflow can fall when the installed duct system restricts the blower. Broan-NuTone identifies duct length, diameter, elbows, and exterior termination as factors; an undersized or flexible duct, excessive bends, or a restrictive cap can also undermine the intended performance. Review the hood’s duct requirements before installation and have the route assessed if the run is long or complicated.

Make-up air is another planning issue for high-airflow systems. Manufacturer guidance warns that local codes may require it, but the trigger varies by jurisdiction and installation. Check with the local building department or a qualified installer before purchasing or installing a high-CFM hood.
When is a 600 CFM hood not the right choice?
The 600+ CFM category is a useful starting point for heavy cooking, not a universal threshold or a promise that every household needs that rating. A hood’s suitability depends on the cooktop, coverage, duct system, and installation. In a kitchen without a workable exterior duct route, a compatible recirculating model may be the practical option, with the trade-off that it filters and returns air rather than exhausting it outdoors.
