The best range hood for a gas stove is not automatically the biggest, loudest, or most expensive model on the shelf. For most American homes, the right answer is a ducted hood that vents outdoors, covers the burners well, moves enough air at real installed conditions, and is quiet enough that you will actually use it.
Gas cooking can produce nitrogen dioxide, carbon monoxide, formaldehyde, ultrafine particles, grease, moisture, heat, and odors. A ductless hood can trap some grease and odor, but it does not send combustion pollutants or cooking moisture outside. If you cook on gas often, especially with high heat, wok cooking, searing, griddling, or a pro-style range, we strongly prefer exterior venting when the house allows it.
On our kitchen projects, we treat the range hood as part of the home system: appliance, duct, exterior cap, electrical, cabinetry, air balance, and code. A hood rated at 900 CFM can perform poorly if it is connected to a long, undersized duct with four elbows. A quieter 450 CFM hood with good capture area and a short 6-inch or 8-inch smooth metal duct can be the better real-world choice.
Quick Answer: What Range Hood Is Best for a Gas Stove?
For a standard 30-inch gas range, a ducted under-cabinet or wall-mount hood in the 300 to 450 CFM range is often the practical target. For a 36-inch range, frequent high-heat cooking, or a range with 60,000 BTU or more of total burner output, look at 600 CFM and higher, but plan the ductwork and makeup air before ordering.

The hood should be at least as wide as the cooktop. When the layout allows, we like 3 inches of overhang on each side, especially for gas ranges, island cooktops, and heavier cooking. That means a 36-inch hood over a 30-inch range is often better than a 30-inch hood, assuming the cabinet layout can accept it.
The best setup usually has these features:
- Ducted exterior venting: through a wall or roof, never into an attic, crawl space, garage, soffit cavity, or cabinet void.
- Proper CFM: commonly 300 to 450 CFM for many 30-inch gas ranges; 600 to 1,200 CFM for high-output or pro-style ranges.
- Good capture area: enough width and depth to cover the burner plume, including front burners.
- Smooth metal duct: correctly sized to the hood manufacturer’s requirements, with short, direct routing.
- Acceptable sound level: a hood that is bearable on everyday speeds will protect air quality better than a loud hood nobody uses.
- Cleanable filters: stainless baffle filters are preferred for heavy gas cooking; mesh filters can work but need more frequent cleaning.
Why Gas Stoves Need Better Ventilation
Gas burners add combustion byproducts to the usual cooking load. That means the hood is handling more than bacon smoke and garlic odor. It is also helping control nitrogen dioxide, carbon monoxide, formaldehyde, water vapor, grease aerosols, and fine particles. Recent research has continued to connect gas and propane cooking with elevated indoor nitrogen dioxide exposure, especially in homes with poor ventilation or smaller kitchens.
The key phrase is capture efficiency. Capture efficiency means how much of the plume rising from the pan and burner is actually caught by the hood and exhausted. Lawrence Berkeley Lab research has shown that residential hood capture efficiency can vary from under 15% to over 98%. That wide range explains why two hoods with the same advertised CFM can behave very differently in the same kitchen.
CFM matters, but it is only one part of performance. Hood shape, depth, width, mounting height, burner location, duct resistance, fan speed, and how the homeowner uses the hood all matter. We see this most clearly with shallow over-the-range microwave vents. They may move air at the back burners, but they often miss the smoke plume from front-burner cooking because the capture area is too shallow.
How Much CFM Do You Need?
A common sizing rule for gas cooking is about 1 CFM per 100 BTU of total burner output. If your range has 45,000 total BTU across all burners, that rule points to about 450 CFM. It is not a perfect engineering calculation, but it is a useful starting point for residential kitchens.
For many standard gas ranges, 300 to 450 CFM is enough when the hood is properly installed and ducted. For high-output ranges, larger cooktops, island locations, and homeowners who cook aggressively, 600 to 1,200 CFM may be appropriate. At that point, the conversation should include duct size, exterior termination, static pressure, noise, and makeup air.
| Gas Cooking Setup | Typical Total Burner Output | Practical Hood Target | Builder Notes |
|---|---|---|---|
| Basic 30-inch gas range | 30,000 to 40,000 BTU | 300 to 400 CFM | Good for everyday cooking if ducted outdoors with a short, clean duct path. |
| Standard 30-inch gas range with frequent searing | 40,000 to 50,000 BTU | 400 to 500 CFM | Use a hood with enough depth to catch front-burner plumes. |
| 36-inch gas range or heavier cooking | 50,000 to 70,000 BTU | 500 to 700 CFM | Plan for larger ductwork and check makeup-air requirements. |
| Pro-style gas range | 70,000 to 120,000+ BTU | 700 to 1,200+ CFM | Needs coordinated hood, duct, cap, electrical, and makeup-air design. |
Do not buy a 1,200 CFM hood just because it looks powerful. If the duct is too small, the hood can become loud, inefficient, and disappointing. In many jurisdictions, hoods above 400 CFM trigger makeup-air requirements. The 2024 International Residential Code includes makeup-air requirements for domestic kitchen exhaust systems above 400 CFM, and many local amendments follow the same concept. Local code always controls.
Ducted vs Ductless Range Hoods
For a gas stove, ducted is the stronger choice. A ducted hood captures cooking exhaust and sends it outdoors through metal ductwork. A ductless hood pulls air through a grease filter and usually a charcoal filter, then recirculates it back into the room.

They can be useful in apartments, condos, budget refreshes, or kitchens where exterior venting is not physically or legally practical. But they do not remove combustion gases or moisture from the house. They also require regular charcoal filter replacement, and performance drops when filters are loaded.
If a client asks us whether a ductless hood is “good enough” for gas, our answer is: good enough for light odor and grease control, not ideal for indoor air quality. If you are remodeling, opening walls, replacing cabinets, or moving the range, that is the right time to explore a real ducted route.

Best Range Hood Types for Gas Stoves
Under-Cabinet Range Hoods
Under-cabinet hoods are the most common choice for a 30-inch or 36-inch gas range on an exterior wall. They mount beneath the cabinet above the stove and can vent through the back wall or upward through a cabinet and ceiling cavity.
For many homes, this is the best value. A good ducted under-cabinet hood can cost $300 to $1,200 for the unit, with installed costs often in the $300 to $850 range for a straightforward replacement when the existing duct and power are reusable. If we have to add ductwork, cut a new wall penetration, install a cap, and patch finishes, the project can move into the $1,200 to $2,500+ range.

Wall-mount hoods work well when there is no cabinet above the range or when the remodel calls for a more open look. They usually have a visible stainless or painted chimney cover that hides the duct.
They can perform very well over gas because they often have better depth and capture area than shallow microwave vents. Watch the ceiling height and chimney extension kit. A 9-foot or 10-foot ceiling may require extra parts, and the duct still needs a clean path to the exterior.
Hood Inserts and Custom Liners
For custom kitchens, a hood insert or liner lets the builder create a wood, plaster, or metal surround while using a listed metal ventilation appliance inside. This is common in higher-end remodels.
The safety detail matters: use a listed liner or insert, maintain required clearances to combustibles, and follow both the appliance instructions and local code. Custom hood projects often land in the $2,500 to $6,000+ range once cabinet work, finish carpentry, electrical, ducting, and makeup air are included.

Island Hoods
Island hoods have a tougher job because cross-drafts from people walking, HVAC registers, and open rooms can push the cooking plume away from the hood. For island gas cooking, we like extra width and depth whenever the design allows. A 36-inch cooktop may deserve a 42-inch hood.
Island installations also tend to cost more because the duct route often travels through ceiling framing and out a roof or sidewall. Roof pitch, attic access, joist direction, and exterior cap location can all affect cost.
Over-the-Range Microwave Vents
Over-the-range microwaves are convenient, but they are rarely our first choice for serious gas cooking. Many are shallow, and the intake is often too far back to capture front-burner smoke well. Some vent outdoors; others recirculate. If you keep one, confirm which type you have.
For light cooking in a small kitchen, an exterior-vented microwave hood can be acceptable. For frequent frying, searing, griddle work, or a higher-BTU gas range, a dedicated hood is usually the better tool.

Downdraft Vents
Downdrafts pull air sideways or downward, working against the natural rise of heat and smoke. They can help in certain island layouts where an overhead hood is not acceptable, but for gas stoves they are usually a compromise. They also require careful duct planning through cabinets, floors, or slabs.
What Proper Ductwork Looks Like
The duct is not an accessory. It is part of the appliance. We have replaced plenty of “bad hoods” that were really bad duct installations.
Use smooth metal duct, not plastic and not crushed flex duct. Follow the hood manufacturer’s required duct diameter. Many 300 to 400 CFM hoods use 6-inch round duct. Higher-CFM hoods often need 8-inch, 10-inch, or equivalent rectangular duct. Reducing duct size to fit an old opening can increase noise and reduce actual airflow.
Keep the route short and direct. Every elbow adds resistance. Long horizontal runs, tight turns, roof caps with restrictive screens, and poorly sealed joints all reduce installed CFM. Seal joints properly, slope or detail exterior runs to prevent water problems, and use a quality wall or roof cap with a backdraft damper.

Never terminate a kitchen range hood into an attic, soffit, crawl space, garage, or wall cavity. That dumps grease, moisture, and pollutants into places where they can create odor, mold, staining, and fire risk. Exhaust should discharge outdoors in a location that meets local clearance rules from openings, intakes, property lines, and other building features.
Mounting Height, Width, and Depth
Most residential range hoods are installed somewhere around 24 to 36 inches above the cooking surface, but the exact height depends on the hood manufacturer and the range manufacturer. Gas ranges often have minimum clearance requirements because of heat and combustibles. Custom surrounds may have additional clearance rules.
Mounting a hood too high hurts capture efficiency. The plume widens as it rises, so a high hood needs more width, more depth, and more airflow to catch the same smoke. This is one reason a beautiful hood can perform poorly if the design team sets it too high for sightlines.
Width should be at least equal to the cooktop width. When possible, 3 inches wider per side is better. Depth is just as important. A shallow hood over a gas range often misses the front burners. For a standard 25-inch-deep countertop, many better hoods project 20 to 24 inches from the wall. That extra coverage can matter more than another 100 CFM on the box label.

Noise: The Feature Homeowners Underestimate
A hood only helps when it is turned on. If the fan sounds like a shop vac, most people use it only after smoke is already in the room. That is backward.
Look for sound ratings in sones. Around 1 to 3 sones is relatively comfortable for low to medium speeds. Higher speeds may be loud, especially on powerful hoods, but you should not need maximum speed for every meal. A multi-speed or variable-speed control is useful because you can run low before cooking, step up during high heat, then leave the hood running afterward.

Our practical habit is simple: start the hood 5 to 10 minutes before cooking and leave it on 10 to 15 minutes after cooking. Use the back burners for high-heat gas cooking when possible because many hoods capture back-burner plumes better than front-burner plumes.
Makeup Air and Code Considerations
When a range hood exhausts air, replacement air has to enter the house. In older, leakier homes, that air often sneaks in through gaps. In newer tight homes, a powerful hood can depressurize the house, pull air down chimneys, interfere with fireplaces or gas water heaters, slam doors, or make the HVAC system struggle.
Many residential codes use 400 CFM as a key threshold. Under the IRC framework, domestic kitchen exhaust systems capable of more than 400 CFM often require makeup air at a rate approximately equal to the exhaust rate, with automatic controls. State and local amendments may be stricter or more specific. Washington State, for example, has detailed amendments in this area. Your local building department and inspector have the final say.
Makeup air can be simple or complex. A basic dampered wall kit may be a modest add-on in a mild climate. A tempered makeup-air system tied into HVAC can add hundreds to several thousand dollars depending on heating load, controls, duct routing, and inspection requirements. This is why we want the hood selected early in a kitchen remodel, not after cabinets are installed.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone. What Range Hood Installation Costs in 2026
Installed cost depends heavily on whether we are replacing an existing hood or creating a new exhaust route. National 2026 benchmarks vary by source, but they line up around a few practical ranges: straightforward replacements are often about $300 to $850 installed; many professional ducted installations fall around $650 to $2,500; and complex custom work can exceed $2,500 quickly.
| Project Type | Typical 2026 Installed Cost | What Usually Drives the Price |
|---|---|---|
| Basic like-for-like replacement | $300 to $850 | Existing duct, electrical, cabinet opening, and exterior cap are reusable. |
| New ducted hood installation | $1,200 to $2,500+ | New wall or roof penetration, ductwork, cap, sealing, finish patching, and electrical coordination. |
| Premium or custom hood | $2,500 to $6,000+ | Custom insert, cabinet changes, soffit work, tile changes, roof work, long duct runs, or makeup air. |
| Hood unit only | Under $150 to $3,000+ | Basic ductless units are cheapest; premium inserts, island hoods, and pro-style hoods cost much more. |
Labor varies by region, ceiling height, roof pitch, wall construction, cabinet details, and permit requirements. Electrical availability matters too. Some hoods plug into an existing cabinet receptacle; others need hardwiring or a new circuit. If backsplash tile must be removed and replaced, that can add both time and cost.
For scheduling, a simple replacement can often be completed in a few hours. A new ducted installation usually takes one full day, sometimes two if roofing, drywall, tile, or cabinet modifications are involved. Custom hood work can stretch across multiple trades and several visits.
When to DIY vs When to Hire a Pro
A careful homeowner can sometimes replace a basic under-cabinet hood if the new unit matches the old opening, the existing duct is sound, the electrical connection is code-compliant, and no cabinet or exterior work is needed. Even then, the hood is heavy enough that two people are safer than one.
DIY is more reasonable when:
- The replacement hood is the same width and duct orientation.
- The existing duct vents outdoors and is in good condition.
- No new wiring, roof work, wall cutting, or cabinet modification is needed.
- You can follow the manufacturer’s mounting height and clearance instructions exactly.
Hire a pro when the project involves new ductwork, roof or exterior wall penetrations, electrical changes, gas appliance clearances, cabinet rebuilding, custom liners, makeup air, or permit inspections. Also hire a pro if you have atmospherically vented combustion appliances, such as some older water heaters or furnaces, because depressurization and backdrafting need to be evaluated carefully.
On our job sites, we also verify the exterior termination location before opening walls. The cap cannot conflict with windows, doors, air intakes, soffits, roof valleys, property-line restrictions, or HOA rules. Fixing that after the hole is cut is expensive.

Common Buying Mistakes to Avoid
The first mistake is buying by maximum CFM alone. A 900 CFM hood with poor ductwork can be louder and less effective than a properly installed 450 CFM hood. The second mistake is choosing ductless for a gas stove and expecting it to remove combustion pollutants. It will not.
Other common problems include using undersized duct, installing too many elbows, placing the hood too high, choosing a hood that is too shallow, forgetting makeup air, or ignoring filter maintenance. Grease-loaded filters restrict airflow and can create odor and fire concerns. Baffle filters should be cleaned regularly, often monthly for heavy cooking and less often for light cooking.
One more practical mistake: waiting too long to choose the hood. In a remodel, the hood affects cabinet layout, backsplash height, electrical rough-in, duct path, exterior cap placement, and sometimes HVAC. Pick it during design, not at the end.
Our Builder’s Recommendation
For most gas-stove kitchens, choose a ducted hood that is at least the width of the range, preferably wider if the layout allows. Aim for 300 to 450 CFM on many standard 30-inch gas ranges, and evaluate 600 CFM or more for high-output cooking. Use smooth metal duct sized to the appliance, keep the run short, and confirm whether makeup air is required before ordering a powerful hood.
What’s actually slowing this PC down?
Pick the symptom - the matching free tool is one click away.
If the decision comes down to a quieter, better-shaped 450 CFM hood versus a loud 700 CFM hood squeezed into bad ductwork, we would usually take the quieter hood with the better installation. Real kitchen ventilation is about capture, exhaust path, and daily use. The best range hood is the one that clears the air without fighting the house.
Frequently Asked Questions
What CFM range hood do I need for a gas stove?
A practical rule is about 1 CFM per 100 BTU of total burner output. Many standard 30-inch gas ranges work well with 300 to 450 CFM when ducted properly. High-output or pro-style gas ranges may need 600 to 1,200 CFM, plus larger ductwork and makeup-air planning.
Is a ductless range hood good enough for a gas stove?
A ductless hood can capture some grease and odor, but it does not exhaust nitrogen dioxide, carbon monoxide, moisture, or other combustion byproducts outdoors. For gas cooking, a ducted exterior-venting hood is the preferred solution when the home can support it.
Do I need makeup air for a 600 CFM range hood?
Often, yes. Many residential codes use 400 CFM as the threshold where makeup air is required. A 600 CFM hood should be reviewed with local code, HVAC design, and any combustion appliances in the home before installation.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute2Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors3Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesHow much does it cost to install a range hood in 2026?
A straightforward like-for-like replacement commonly costs about $300 to $850 installed. Many ducted installations run $650 to $2,500. Custom hoods, new duct routing, roof penetrations, cabinet changes, electrical work, or makeup air can push the total to $2,500 to $6,000 or more.
How high should a range hood be above a gas stove?
Many residential hoods are installed roughly 24 to 36 inches above the cooking surface, but the exact height must follow the hood and range manufacturer’s instructions. Mounting the hood too high reduces capture efficiency, especially on front burners.
Why is my new range hood loud but not pulling smoke well?
The most common causes are undersized ductwork, too many elbows, a restrictive exterior cap, a dirty filter, poor hood depth, or a hood mounted too high. Rated CFM is measured under controlled conditions; installed airflow can be much lower if duct resistance is high.
