For flat panels, furniture surfaces, and edge work, compare quarter-sheet palm sanders by the paper they accept, dust collection, handling, and whether you want corded or cordless power. Manufacturer-listed options include the corded DEWALT DWE6411K, Makita BO4556/BO4556K, and BLACK+DECKER BDEQS300. Their pad and sheet dimensions differ, so confirm the exact model’s paper format before buying abrasives. These are feature-based choices, not a hands-on or independently ranked “best overall” pick.

How to choose a quarter-sheet sander

Start with the workpiece. A rectangular quarter-sheet pad is suited to broad, relatively flat surfaces and edges. The label alone does not guarantee that every sander takes the same paper size or hole pattern. Check the model’s stated dimensions, clamp arrangement, and dust-hole layout, then buy paper that fits those details.

  • Match the paper: Compare the product’s pad or sheet dimensions with the abrasives you can source.
  • Check paper installation: Clamps, pre-punched sheets, and a punch plate affect how easily you can fit paper and align dust holes.
  • Consider dust collection: A dust bag or built-in collection can help manage sanding debris, but the cited product pages do not establish that the models connect to a shop vacuum. Verify connection options and hole alignment for the exact tool.
  • Choose the power format: A corded model avoids battery-platform considerations; a cordless model may suit work where a cord is inconvenient.
  • Think about access: For tight spaces and intricate surfaces, a pointed detail-sander shape may suit the job better than a rectangular quarter-sheet pad.

Manufacturer-listed quarter-sheet options

The specifications below come from the manufacturers’ product pages, which do not state publication years. They describe listed features, not independent tests of finish quality. OPM and amperage figures should not be treated as proof that one sander finishes better than another.

Model Power and listed specifications Paper and dust features Useful fit
DEWALT DWE6411K DEWALT lists this as a corded electric 1/4-inch sheet palm-grip sander. Its sheet-sander catalog listing gives a 4.5 by 5.5 inch sheet size and 14,000 OPM. Confirm the figures on the specific product listing because the catalog page includes more than one model. Confirm the selected model’s paper attachment and dust-hole requirements before purchasing sheets; the cited catalog page does not establish consumable compatibility details for every listing. A corded option to consider if its listed sheet format and your preferred paper supply match.
Makita BO4556 / BO4556K Makita lists a 2.0 amp motor, 14,000 OPM, and a 4.5 by 4 inch pad, and describes reduced vibration. Makita specifies through-the-pad dust collection. The BO4556K package listing includes abrasive paper, a dust bag, a punch plate, and a tool case. Consider it if the stated pad size suits your available abrasives and the BO4556K package’s included items are useful.
BLACK+DECKER BDEQS300 BLACK+DECKER lists a 2.0 amp motor and 16,000 OPM, and describes the tool as a 1/4-sheet finishing sander for wood, metal, and plastic. The product page lists paper clamps and built-in dust collection. Consider it if you want a clamp-held paper format and a manufacturer-described ability to sand flush on three sides.
DEWALT DCW200B DEWALT lists this separately as a 20V MAX XR brushless variable-speed 1/4-sheet sander. Check the specific product listing for the exact paper dimensions, dust setup, and what is included; the cited catalog description does not establish those details. A cordless alternative to the corded DWE6411K, not the same model or power format.

Why paper fit and dust-hole alignment matter

The listed formats are not identical: DEWALT’s catalog gives a 4.5 by 5.5 inch sheet size, while Makita specifies a 4.5 by 4 inch pad. Do not infer compatibility from the “quarter-sheet” label. Before buying a bulk pack, match its dimensions to the exact sander and check whether it must be punched or comes pre-punched for that tool.

Dust collection also depends on how the paper meets the pad. Makita describes through-the-pad collection and includes a punch plate in the BO4556K package listing; BLACK+DECKER lists built-in dust collection and paper clamps for the BDEQS300. These descriptions do not make the accessories or hole patterns interchangeable. Check the manufacturer’s instructions for the selected model.

When a detail sander is a better fit

A quarter-sheet sander’s rectangular pad works naturally on flat areas and edges, but a rectangular pad may not reach into every corner or follow intricate contours conveniently. CRAFTSMAN describes its detail-sander category as intended for precision sanding in tight spaces and intricate surfaces, with corded and cordless examples on its category page. That is a different pad-shape choice, not a universal reach limit for every project.

If your job is mostly broad panels with occasional edge work, a quarter-sheet model may be the more useful primary tool. If the work is dominated by small, tight, or intricate surfaces, compare a detail sander instead of assuming a quarter-sheet model will cover both jobs equally well. Make the final choice by project and setup

  1. Measure the abrasive format you need. Use the selected model’s stated pad or sheet size, rather than the category name, to find matching paper.
  2. Confirm how paper attaches. Check the clamp system, whether pre-punched sheets are required, and whether a punch plate is supplied in the package you are buying.
  3. Check dust handling. Verify the dust bag or collection setup and align the abrasive’s holes with the pad. Do not assume a vacuum connection unless the model’s documentation confirms one.
  4. Choose corded or cordless deliberately. DEWALT’s DWE6411K is listed as corded; the separately listed DCW200B is cordless and variable-speed. Compare the exact product package and specifications rather than treating them as variants of one identical tool.
  5. Match the pad shape to the surface. Favor a rectangular quarter-sheet pad for flat finishing and edges; consider a detail-sander shape when tight or intricate geometry is central to the job.

Makita describes the BO4556K as combining “fast, smooth performance with a contoured rubberized palm grip and ease-of-use features.” That is the manufacturer’s product-page description, not an independent comparative finding.
