Best Printers With Cheap Ink in 2026: Budget Home Printers That Cost Less to Run

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Some links on this page are affiliate links: if you buy through them we may earn a commission, at no extra cost to you.

For most households that print color documents every week, a refillable ink-tank printer is the best 2026 choice. Epson EcoTank, Canon MegaTank, and HP Smart Tank models cost more initially than basic cartridge printers, but their bottled ink generally costs far less over time. If you print only occasionally, a cheap cartridge printer may still be the better financial decision. If you print almost entirely black text, consider a monochrome laser printer instead.

The right choice depends on how many pages you print, whether you need color, and whether features such as automatic duplexing, an automatic document feeder, Ethernet, or fax justify a higher purchase price.

Best printers with cheap ink

Best overall for regular color printing: Epson EcoTank ET-3850 or current successor

The ET-3850 class is a sensible middle ground between a basic tank printer and a full home-office machine. It is better suited to recurring document printing than the entry-level ET-2800, particularly when automatic two-sided printing, a document feeder, or better paper handling matters.

Popular on Amazon

  • INNOVATIVE CARTRIDGE-FREE PRINTING — High-capacity ink tanks mean no more dealing with lots of tiny ink cartridges; Epson’s exclusive EcoFit ink bottles make filling easy to keep you using this home office printer for longer
  • CLEAR AND VIBRANT PRINT QUALITY ― Create memorable prints and projects; Unique Micro Piezo Heat-Free Technology allows wireless color printer to produce sharp text and impressive color photos and graphics on virtually any paper type
  • ZERO CARTRIDGE WASTE — By using an Epson EcoTank printer you can help reduce the amount of cartridge waste ending up in landfills
  • BUILT IN SCANNER AND COPIER ― All-In-One Epson EcoTank is more than a printer; High-resolution flatbed scanner and color display come together for easy document copying and navigation; Boost productivity with this printer, copier, scanner, and fax
  • LESS FREQUENT INK REPLACEMENT — Replacement ink bottles don't have to be changed nearly as often as ink cartridges¹; Printer, scanner and copier lets you print up to 4,500 pages black/7,500 color² extra

Because Epson updates and retires models, check the current U.S. configuration for duplexing, ADF availability, paper capacity, bottle number, and price. Independent 2026 coverage places more capable Epson models such as the ET-3950 and ET-4850 among strong cheap-ink options. See RTINGS’ current cheap-ink testing and TechRadar’s ink-tank coverage before choosing between closely priced models.

Best budget tank printer: Epson EcoTank ET-2800

The ET-2800 is aimed at students and households that want refillable color printing without paying for office-class features. It prints, scans, and copies over a wireless connection, and Epson rates the included bottles for up to 4,500 black pages and 7,500 color pages.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Those are manufacturer-rated yields, not a promise of how long the ink will last in your home. Photos, cleaning cycles, setup ink, heavy color coverage, and wasted pages reduce real-world results. Epson’s U.S. product page has listed a $239.99 price, while promotional coverage has reported lower sale prices; treat both the price and availability as time-sensitive.

The ET-2800 is a poor fit for frequent multi-page scanning, fast office work, or users who require automatic duplexing. See the official Epson specifications before buying.

Best Canon alternative: Canon PIXMA G3270 MegaTank

The PIXMA G3270 is a budget refillable color all-in-one that competes directly with entry-level EcoTank models. Canon promotes high-yield bottles and claims savings of up to $1,000 on ink. That is a manufacturer comparison claim, not an independently guaranteed lifetime saving; the result depends on the comparison printer, page volume, yields, and current ink prices.

Check whether the current U.S. model is the G3270 or a newer variant, and verify duplexing, borderless printing, paper capacity, scanner features, and GI-series bottle pricing. The official Canon product page is the appropriate starting point.

Best inexpensive HP tank: HP Smart Tank 5101

The Smart Tank 5101 is a basic wireless printer, scanner, and copier for everyday family use. HP lists manual two-sided printing and up to 6,000 color pages of included ink for relevant Smart Tank models.

Its main compromise is productivity: manual duplexing is slower and more error-prone than automatic two-sided printing, and this class of printer is not intended for heavy multi-page scanning. A dated August 2026 promotion reported a $170 price compared with a stated $260 regular price. That was a sale, not a permanent valuation.

Choose it when the purchase price is attractive and your documents are mostly occasional single-sided pages. Choose a 6000-series model instead if automatic duplexing will save you time every week.

Best family printer with automatic duplexing: HP Smart Tank 6001

The HP Smart Tank 6000 series is more practical for families sharing a printer because it adds automatic duplexing and dual-band Wi-Fi. HP advertises up to 6,000 black and 8,000 color pages of included ink for the series.

  • BEST PRINT QUALITY, PERIOD – Sharper text, richer colors, only with HP Smart Tank

This is a better fit for homework, forms, and recurring office documents than the 5101. Confirm the exact U.S. model number and current feature list, since HP naming varies by retailer and region. The HP Smart Tank comparison page lists the current series features.

Best home-office tank: HP Smart Tank 7602

The Smart Tank 7602 makes sense when you will use its office features rather than merely seeking inexpensive ink. HP lists automatic duplexing, printing, scanning, copying, faxing, Ethernet, USB host connectivity, and a 35-page automatic document feeder. It also advertises up to 6,000 black and 8,000 color pages of included ink.

An ADF is particularly valuable for multi-page forms, tax documents, contracts, and packets. Ethernet is useful when a printer must remain connected to a home-office network. RTINGS identifies the 7602 as a strong alternative for users who print more color documents.

Its higher purchase price is difficult to justify for someone printing a few pages each month. Review the HP specification sheet and current U.S. product information before purchasing.

Best for high-volume printing: Epson EcoTank Pro ET-5850

The EcoTank Pro ET-5850 belongs in a different category from a cheap entry-level home printer. It is designed for high-volume home-office or small-business use, where speed, paper handling, duplexing, and office features can matter more than the lowest purchase price.

RTINGS names it its leading cheap-ink printer in its 2026 testing. That does not make it the best choice for everyone: a buyer printing 20 pages a month is unlikely to benefit from paying for a higher-end workhorse.

Best for mostly black text: a monochrome laser printer

If nearly everything you print is black text, compare a monochrome laser printer before buying an ink tank. Laser printers avoid liquid-ink drying concerns and are often a better match for frequent text printing, forms, and documents that may sit in a printer queue for weeks.

The trade-off is absolute: a monochrome laser cannot print color. It may also cost more initially, and features such as scanning, copying, duplexing, and an ADF vary by model. Select one when speed, text reliability, and black-only output matter more than color documents or photos.

Best for very occasional printing: a cheap cartridge printer

Cartridge printers remain rational for people who print fewer than roughly 25 pages a month, especially when the purchase price is the overriding constraint. A tank printer’s low ink cost does not automatically compensate for its higher upfront price.

Before buying, price the replacement cartridge set. Some replacement sets approach or exceed the printer’s original purchase price, and some models will not print normally when one color is empty. A high-yield cartridge model or an optional subscription may be a better compromise, but calculate the cost for your actual page count.

  • INNOVATIVE CARTRIDGE-FREE PRINTING — No more dealing with tiny, expensive ink cartridges; With this wireless printer each ink bottle set is equivalent to about 80 individual cartridges²
  • LESS FREQUENT INK REPLACEMENT — Replacement ink bottles don't have to be changed nearly as often as ink cartridges¹; Color printer lets you print up to 4,500 black and white pages and 7,200 color³
  • PRINT FOR LONGER — Up to 2 years of ink in the box⁴ (and with every replacement ink set) for fewer out-of-ink frustrations; This home printer keeps printing longer
  • HIGH CAPACITY INK TANKS – Printer, scanner and copier utilizes Epson’s exclusive EcoFit ink bottles, making the refill process easy and worry-free
  • ZERO CARTRIDGE WASTE — By using an Epson EcoTank printer you can help reduce the amount of cartridge waste ending up in landfills; Cartridge-free printer utilizes ink bottles for more convenience and less waste

How much do you print?

Use these bands as decision aids, not universal break-even rules:

  • Under 25 pages per month: A reliable cartridge printer may cost less overall because you avoid a large upfront premium.
  • 25–100 pages per month: Compare a tank printer with a high-yield cartridge model using current bottle and cartridge prices.
  • 100–300 pages per month: A tank printer usually becomes more compelling, particularly when much of the output is color.
  • 300 or more pages per month: Consider a higher-end tank or laser printer with automatic duplexing, larger trays, better speed, and easier maintenance.

HP recommends considering a Smart Tank when printing exceeds approximately 100 pages monthly or cartridges are being replaced every few months. That is a manufacturer recommendation, not an independent break-even threshold.

Tank versus cartridge versus laser

Printer type Best fit Advantages Trade-offs
Refillable ink tank Regular color documents and moderate-to-high home volume Large included ink supply, low replacement-ink cost, fewer refills Higher purchase price; ink can still clog or dry; entry models may be slow
Cartridge inkjet Very occasional printing and low upfront budgets Usually inexpensive to buy, compact, easy to replace cartridges Higher cost per page; starter cartridges may be small; subscription restrictions may apply
Monochrome laser Mostly black text, forms, and reliable intermittent use Fast text output and no liquid-ink maintenance No color; feature and toner costs vary

What “cheap ink” really means

“Cheap ink” can refer to several different measurements:

  • Low purchase price: The printer is inexpensive to buy, regardless of future supplies.
  • Low black cost per page: Useful for text-heavy households.
  • Low color cost per page: More relevant to schoolwork, charts, forms, and color documents.
  • Low total ownership cost: The printer, ink, paper, subscriptions, maintenance, and waste over a chosen period.
  • Included ink value: The box may contain thousands of pages, but the value depends on how many pages you actually print.

Manufacturer yields are useful for comparing models under standardized conditions, but they are not a household guarantee. Setup ink, automatic cleaning, nozzle checks, heavy graphics, photos, and incorrect or wasted pages all affect consumption. Paper and photo media can also cost more than the ink itself for certain jobs.

Calculate the cost before you buy

For a simplified four-color tank comparison:

Estimated color cost per page =
(black bottle cost ÷ black yield) +
(cyan bottle cost ÷ cyan yield) +
(magenta bottle cost ÷ magenta yield) +
(yellow bottle cost ÷ yellow yield)

This is only an estimate. It excludes setup ink, cleaning cycles, paper, photo coverage, wasted pages, replacement printheads, shipping, sales tax, and subscriptions.

For a broader three-year comparison:

Three-year ownership cost =
printer price + ink or toner purchases + paper + subscriptions + maintenance
− resale value, if relevant

Run the calculation for at least 25, 100, 250, and 500 pages per month. Include separate estimates for black-only documents, mixed color pages, and occasional photos. A tank printer’s lower per-page cost may take years to offset its higher purchase price at very low volume.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Do not copy a generic “90% savings” figure into your calculation. Epson, Canon, and HP savings claims depend on particular cartridge comparisons, yields, prices, and usage assumptions. HP’s own break-even guidance is useful as a method, but use current model-specific prices rather than a generic example.

Features worth paying for

Automatic duplex printing

Automatic duplexing prints both sides without manually turning the paper. It is valuable for schoolwork, forms, and office documents. HP’s 5000/5100 series uses manual two-sided printing, while the 6000 and 7600 series provide automatic duplexing.

Automatic document feeder

A flatbed scanner is adequate for an occasional page or photograph. An ADF is much faster for multi-page packets, signed forms, and tax documents. The HP Smart Tank 7602 specification lists a 35-page ADF.

Paper capacity and media support

A 60- to 100-sheet tray may be fine for light use but frustrating for a family or home office. Check support for envelopes, heavier paper, borderless printing, photo paper, and the paper sizes you actually use.

Connectivity

Useful options include dual-band Wi-Fi, Wi-Fi Direct, Ethernet, USB printing, AirPrint, Mopria, and a dependable mobile app. Do not assume that every entry-level printer includes Ethernet or USB-host printing.

Photo quality

Low ink cost does not guarantee good photos. Photo pages use substantially more ink than ordinary text pages, and photo paper can dominate the total cost. Epson models often appeal to photo-oriented buyers, while Canon models can be attractive for casual photos, but independent testing should decide the ranking.

Printhead and maintenance design

Ink tanks are not maintenance-free. Print periodically, follow the manufacturer’s cleaning instructions, and expect some ink use during maintenance. TechRadar notes that HP Smart Tank and Canon MegaTank models use user-installed printheads, while many Epson EcoTank models have the printhead built in. That difference may affect repairability and long-term risk.

Subscriptions, accounts, and included ink

HP Instant Ink is an alternative to buying high-yield cartridges, not an automatic recommendation. HP advertises plans starting at $1.79 per month, with the charge based on a page allowance rather than the physical amount of ink used.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Subscription value depends on your monthly page count, rollover rules, plan changes, cancellation terms, photo usage, and whether you want to use third-party ink. It may suit predictable printing, but it can be a poor fit for irregular use or people who dislike accounts and recurring charges.

Keep the distinctions clear:

  • Tank printer: Buy compatible bottles as needed; there is no mandatory monthly ink plan.
  • Instant Ink: Pay for a page allowance and receive cartridges automatically.
  • High-yield cartridges: Pay when you buy replacement cartridges, usually at a higher cost per page than a tank.

Also check whether setup requires an account or internet connection. HP states that HP+ requires an HP account, internet access, and Original HP ink. HP+ and Instant Ink are not the same thing, so read the terms for the exact printer.

How to keep ink costs low

  • Use draft or economy mode for internal documents.
  • Use black-only printing when color is unnecessary.
  • Print only the pages you need instead of entire documents.
  • Use ordinary office paper for drafts and reserve photo paper for finished images.
  • Print a small black-and-color test page periodically if the printer sits unused.
  • Follow cleaning instructions rather than repeatedly running unnecessary deep-clean cycles.
  • Buy the exact compatible bottle number listed for the printer.
  • Do not assume third-party ink is risk-free; it can affect clogging, color consistency, quality, and warranty support.
  • Compare replacement bottles or cartridges before buying the printer.

Common mistakes to avoid

Choosing the lowest purchase price

The cheapest printer to buy is not necessarily the cheapest to own. Compare the initial price, realistic annual pages, replacement supplies, paper, and any subscription.

Treating “two years of ink” as a guarantee

Claims about two or three years of included ink are based on page-count assumptions. HP’s current materials tie some claims to usage such as 167 or 200 pages per month. Your actual color coverage and volume may be very different.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Buying a tank printer for only a few pages a month

If you print 10 or 20 pages monthly, the tank’s initial premium may outweigh its ink savings. You may also increase the risk of clogged nozzles by leaving the printer idle.

Ignoring missing office features

A low-cost tank may lack automatic duplexing, an ADF, Ethernet, a large paper tray, fast speeds, or fax. Decide which omissions you can tolerate before paying for low running costs.

Using the wrong bottle

Ink bottles are model-specific. Match the exact bottle family to the printer; color alone is not enough. HP’s supply documentation shows that Smart Tank models use different bottle families.

Assuming a sale price is permanent

Promotional coverage in August 2026 reported prices such as $170 for the HP Smart Tank 5101 and $199.99 for the Epson ET-2800. These are dated deals, not dependable normal prices. Recalculate value at the price available when you buy.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Final decision guide

  1. Print fewer than 25 pages monthly? Start with the cheapest reliable cartridge printer and price its replacement cartridges.
  2. Print color documents every week? Choose an entry-level refillable tank.
  3. Need two-sided documents? Select a model with automatic duplexing rather than manually turning pages.
  4. Scan multi-page documents? Pay for an automatic document feeder.
  5. Print mostly black text? Compare a monochrome laser printer.
  6. Print hundreds of pages monthly? Choose a higher-volume tank or business-oriented laser with suitable speed, paper capacity, and maintenance support.
