The right choice depends on the weed, local germination timing, lawn establishment stage, and the exact product label—not on a single nationwide “best” product.
Which pre-emergent active ingredient fits your weed problem?
Pre-emergents work by preventing susceptible weeds from establishing as they germinate. They are not a general fix for weeds that are already mature. Choose by target weed and confirm that the specific product is labeled for bermudagrass.
| Active ingredient | What it can help prevent | Key qualification |
|---|---|---|
| Prodiamine | Grasses and some small-seeded broadleaf weeds, including summer annual grassy weeds. | Texas A&M lists it for bermudagrass lawns; Barricade is an example product family. Check the current product label for the exact formulation and use. Texas A&M AgriLife Extension; University of Nebraska–Lincoln Extension |
| Dithiopyr | Grasses and some small-seeded broadleaves; it can also control crabgrass shortly after germination. | The early post-emergence window is limited to crabgrass at an early stage; it is not a general mature-weed killer. Dimension is an example product family. Texas A&M AgriLife Extension; University of Nebraska–Lincoln Extension; University of Florida IFAS Extension |
| Pendimethalin | Annual grasses and some small-seeded weeds in labeled programs. | Some formulations may stain concrete or brick pavers; follow application and cleanup directions. Pendulum is an example product family. Texas A&M AgriLife Extension; University of Nebraska–Lincoln Extension; University of Florida IFAS Extension |
| Isoxaben | Broadleaf weeds. | It does not control grassy weeds such as crabgrass or annual bluegrass, so it is not the choice for those problems. Texas A&M AgriLife Extension |
When to apply pre-emergent on bermudagrass
Apply before the target weed germinates. The useful window depends on your region and the weed species, so a date recommended for one state should not be treated as a national schedule.
- Nebraska Extension describes traditional crabgrass-label timing in the north-central United States as about two weeks before germination, with its regional calendar placing that period around April to early May. Nebraska Extension
- Oklahoma State’s consumer bermudagrass calendar recommends January 1 to March 5 for the first crabgrass pre-emergent application in Oklahoma. Oklahoma State University Extension
- Clemson recommends a selective annual-grass or broadleaf pre-emergent labeled for bermudagrass during late winter and spring to reduce many weeds the following summer. Clemson Cooperative Extension
Use local extension guidance and the target weed’s emergence pattern to plan timing, then follow the product label. If the weed has already germinated, a pre-emergent may have missed its prevention window.

How to choose a product and apply it responsibly
- Identify the weed. Decide whether you are trying to prevent crabgrass or another annual grass, a small-seeded broadleaf, or a different weed. Active ingredients do not have interchangeable spectra.
- Check turf eligibility. Confirm the label names bermudagrass and allows use at your lawn’s establishment stage. Newly seeded or otherwise newly established turf may face product-specific waiting periods or restrictions.
- Match the timing to your area. Consult local extension recommendations for the target weed; do not apply another region’s calendar date without checking its relevance.
- Read the entire current label. Use its directions for rate, repeat applications, watering, application method, eligible turf, and reseeding intervals. These requirements vary by product and are not safely generalized across active ingredients.
- Choose a practical formulation. Granular products require suitable spreading equipment; liquid products require the appropriate application equipment. For products containing pendimethalin or prodiamine, check whether the formulation has hardscape-staining cautions and follow its cleanup instructions.
What pre-emergent cannot do
Except for dithiopyr’s limited early activity against crabgrass shortly after germination, these products should be selected and timed for prevention rather than treatment of established weeds. Isoxaben does not address grassy weeds such as crabgrass or annual bluegrass. If weeds are already growing, identify them and look for a labeled control approach appropriate to that weed and your lawn instead of assuming a pre-emergent will remove them.
