1Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches2Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems3Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteFor a portable countertop burner, the right choice depends first on whether you need one cooking surface or two, then on cookware compatibility, footprint, controls and safety instructions. This guide compares manufacturer-documented examples, not independently tested winners. It covers portable hot plates—not built-in electric cooktops, which require a separate assessment of installation, cutout dimensions and electrical requirements.
How to choose a portable electric burner
Start with burner count and counter space
A single hot plate takes less counter space and can add occasional cooking capacity. A double burner gives you two surfaces for separate pots but occupies a wider footprint. Whirlpool’s guidance for installed cooktops—not portable burners—offers a useful general principle: “If you typically use just one or two burners at a time, a 2-burner cooktop can help save counter space for other tasks.” Whirlpool’s cooktop guidance is not a portable-burner comparison, so use the idea as a planning consideration rather than a product-performance claim.
Check the heating type against your pans
Conventional coil and solid-plate burners generally accommodate a wider range of cookware than induction, but compatibility depends on the particular model. Induction requires cookware that can interact with its electromagnetic field. The U.S. Department of Energy says, “Any pots or pans with a flat bottom that a magnet sticks to will work with an induction cooktop.” DOE’s induction explanation describes the general compatibility test; check the specific burner’s manual and product listing before buying.
Induction heats the cookware itself, and heating stops when the pan is removed; some models also use cookware-detection shutoff. These are general characteristics, not guarantees for every appliance. DOE reports that Consumer Reports testing found induction could boil water 20–40% faster than the tested gas and traditional electric cooktops. That comparison does not measure the portable models described below. Read DOE’s overview of induction cooking.

Compare power, controls and practical details
Use the exact model’s rated wattage and control type as specifications—not as a substitute for measured cooking-speed results. Pan size, cookware, heat control and the electrical supply also affect cooking. Check the stated footprint, plate or surface design, nonslip feet, cleaning instructions and written warranty. Follow the model’s manual for placement and clearances; an indicator light does not necessarily mean a surface is cool.

Proctor Silex 34107: a single-burner example
Proctor Silex lists the 34107 as a portable countertop single burner rated at 1,000 watts. Its manufacturer describes an adjustable temperature control, a cast-iron plate with ceramic nonstick coating, nonslip rubber feet, and compatibility with all types of cookware. The listed dimensions are 2.7 inches high by 8.6 inches wide by 9.6 inches deep, and the manufacturer states a three-year limited warranty. It says the burner works best with pans about 6 inches in diameter and describes boiling five cups of water in 15 minutes or less; that timing is the manufacturer’s claim, not an independent test. See Proctor Silex’s 34107 specifications.
Its single-surface format may suit a small kitchen or occasional extra cooking capacity. Check that your usual pan size suits the manufacturer’s guidance and that the listed footprint fits your counter.

Cuisinart CB-60P1: a double-burner example
Cuisinart lists the CB-60P1 as a countertop double burner with 1,800 watts total: 1,300 watts for the large plate and 500 watts for the small plate. The manufacturer specifies independent adjustable thermostats, on/ready indicator lights, heavy-duty cast-iron plates, nonslip feet, dimensions of 11.5 by 19.5 by 2.5 inches, and a three-year product warranty. The wattage split and two-surface layout do not establish that both plates deliver equivalent cooking performance. See Cuisinart’s CB-60P1 specifications.
This example is for shoppers who need two cooking surfaces and can spare the counter area. Compare the two plate sizes, controls and total footprint with the needs of your pots and usual cooking tasks; a countertop double burner is not a substitute for a full-size range.

Read the manual for your exact burner and follow its placement, use and cleaning instructions. Put it on an appropriate, stable surface, keep children away from hot cookware and surfaces, and do not leave active cooking unattended. CPSC advises staying in the kitchen while cooking. Its guidance reports nearly 150,000 cooking fires per year—more than 40% of annual unintentional residential fires—and an estimated average of 3,450 related injuries each year during 2009–2011; these are historical figures, not current estimates.
