The right aluminum polish depends on the surface finish, not a universal “best” ranking. For suitable uncoated aluminum, compare Mothers Ultimate Mag & Aluminum Polish and Meguiar’s Metal Polish G211606; Flitz Paste Metal Polish is a multi-surface alternative with specific finish exclusions. Manufacturer directions confirm their intended uses, but do not establish a controlled performance winner.
Check the aluminum finish before choosing a polish
First identify whether the aluminum is bare or uncoated, polished, anodized, plated, patinated, or covered by a protective coating. A product suitable for bare aluminum may not be suitable for a coating or decorative finish. If you cannot identify the finish, consult the item’s manufacturer before polishing; do not assume that a metal polish is safe simply because it lists aluminum.
- Uncoated aluminum: Mothers describes its polish for uncoated metal, including aluminum. Meguiar’s specifies uncoated metals, including polished aluminum.
- Plated or patinated surfaces: Flitz says not to use its paste on electroplated or patina finishes. Its FAQ also warns that polishing can remove plating.
- Anodized or otherwise coated surfaces: Check the item’s care instructions and the polish manufacturer’s compatibility guidance before applying a compound.
Compare the three aluminum-polish options
| Product | Stated fit | Product type and application |
|---|---|---|
| Mothers Ultimate Mag & Aluminum Polish | Mothers says product 05120 is for uncoated metal, including aluminum. | Metal polish. The manufacturer gives hand-application directions and also describes use with Mothers Power tools. |
| Meguiar’s Metal Polish G211606 | Meguiar’s specifies uncoated metals, including polished aluminum. | Metal polish. Manufacturer guidance supports application by hand or with a drill attachment. |
| Flitz Paste Metal Polish | Flitz lists aluminum among suitable metals; it excludes electroplated and patina finishes. | Multi-surface paste for cleaning, polishing, and protection. The manufacturer directs users to apply a thin layer, rub gently, and buff. |
For uncoated aluminum: Mothers
Mothers is the most specifically named aluminum option in this shortlist. Its directions call for a clean, soft microfiber cloth: apply a small amount, rub back and forth, then wipe off residue while it is still wet. The manufacturer also describes drill use with Mothers Power tools. See the Mothers product guidance for its instructions.
For polished, uncoated aluminum: Meguiar’s G211606
Meguiar’s explicitly includes polished aluminum among the uncoated metals its Metal Polish G211606 is intended for. It allows hand application or a drill attachment, so machine assistance is an option rather than a requirement. The relevant product is Meguiar’s Metal Polish G211606.

For more than one surface type: Flitz
Flitz describes its paste as a multi-surface metal polish and lists aluminum as a suitable metal. Its directions are to spread a thin layer, rub gently, and buff with microfiber or a soft towel. Do not use it on electroplated or patina finishes; see the Flitz product page and Flitz FAQs for the manufacturer’s surface cautions.
Apply the product according to its own directions
- Confirm compatibility. Match the polish to the aluminum’s actual finish and read the manufacturer’s directions. If the surface is coated, plated, anodized, patinated, or unknown, do not proceed unless the item and polish instructions support it.
- Use the method specified for that product. For Mothers, use a clean, soft microfiber cloth and rub back and forth. For Flitz, apply a thin layer, rub gently, and buff. Meguiar’s supports hand use or a drill attachment.
- Follow the product’s residue and buffing directions. Mothers says to remove residue before it dries. Flitz calls for buffing with microfiber or a soft towel.
- For plastic applications with Flitz, test discreetly first. Flitz’s FAQ advises a small hidden-area test for plastic; that caution is not a substitute for checking the aluminum item’s finish.
Polish is different from wheel cleaner
Mothers Polished Aluminum Wheel Cleaner is a spray-on, hose-off cleaner for wheel surfaces, including uncoated polished aluminum and anodized wheels. It is a cleaning product, not the same product or process as Mothers Mag & Aluminum Polish, which is applied and buffed as a polish. Choose a cleaner when the task is removing dirt from a compatible wheel; choose a polish only when the surface and product directions are a match.

Do not confuse Meguiar’s metal polish with its paint polish
Meguiar’s Ultimate Polish G19216 is described by the manufacturer as a pre-wax paint glaze for glossy automotive paint and clear coats. It is distinct from Metal Polish G211606, the product specified for uncoated metals such as polished aluminum. Check the full product name and number before buying or applying it: Meguiar’s Ultimate Polish G19216.
