Short answer: Don’t rely on an ultrasonic plug-in to keep pests away. The U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) says it has no safety or effectiveness data for sound-wave repellent devices and does not know whether they work against mosquitoes. For outdoor mosquito control, an EPA-labeled product such as PlugNRepel is a distinct option—but its label limits it to outdoor use with compatible string lights and pods.
Are plug-in pest repellents effective?
“Plug-in pest repellent” can mean products that work in very different ways. Ultrasonic or electromagnetic devices emit sound or signals; other products disperse a pesticidal ingredient. They are not interchangeable, and the word “plug-in” alone says little about a product’s effectiveness.
EPA states that sound-wave devices are not registered as insect repellents and that it has no safety or effectiveness data for them. It does not know whether they will work against mosquitoes. That means an ultrasonic device should not be treated as a proven solution for a mosquito problem—or as a substitute for pest-specific prevention.
EPA’s guide explains that electrical or electromagnetic pest-control products sold without a pesticidal substance are generally regulated as devices. Device manufacturers generally do not submit efficacy or safety data for EPA premarket review. An EPA establishment number on a device identifies the establishment where it was produced; it is not evidence that EPA reviewed the device’s effectiveness, registered it, certified it, or endorsed it.

How to compare plug-in options
- Target pest: Check whether the product is intended for mosquitoes, another flying insect, a crawling insect, rodents, or a named species. Broad claims are not a substitute for pest-specific evidence.
- Mechanism: Distinguish sound or electromagnetic devices from products that disperse an active repellent ingredient. The regulatory category and evidence expectations can differ.
- Evidence and label: Look for an EPA-registered pesticide product and follow its label when the product disperses a pesticidal substance. An establishment number on a device is not EPA efficacy approval.
- Setting and placement: Confirm whether the product is for indoor or outdoor use, and check electrical, placement, wind, and coverage restrictions.
- Ongoing needs: Check compatibility, setup time, stated coverage, and whether the product needs replacement pods or refills.
- Safety claims: Don’t infer safety from phrases such as “chemical-free” or “pet-safe.” Use the product only as its label directs.
Outdoor mosquito option: PlugNRepel
PlugNRepel is not an indoor ultrasonic repeller. Its EPA label, dated February 20, 2025, describes a spatial mosquito-repellent device used with outdoor string lights and replaceable pods. The label states that one unit provides a protection zone of 110 square feet and instructs users to hang the lights 8 feet above the ground. It also says to allow 45 minutes for protection to become established, replace empty pods, and use the device only with an outdoor-rated 120Vac outlet. These are label statements and directions, not independent comparative test results.
Use only the compatible pods specified by the label, and check current availability and compatibility before buying. The label’s outdoor restrictions make this a different choice from an indoor ultrasonic device.

What to use when a plug-in device is not a good fit
Match the response to the pest and where it is getting in. EPA describes integrated pest management (IPM) as combining preventive measures with reduced-risk treatment methods. Depending on the problem, that may mean sealing entry points or using a pest-specific trap alongside other appropriate prevention and treatment—not expecting one general-purpose device to solve every infestation.
For mosquito protection, EPA advises reading the label on registered repellents. Its registration guidance explains that companies provide technical safety and effectiveness information for registered products. The agency’s lookup covers skin-applied repellents, and its database page says the listings were last updated in June 2019; it should not be treated as a current retail catalog.

Why unsupported claims deserve caution
The Federal Trade Commission (FTC) has challenged electronic pest-control claims in past enforcement actions. In a May 2001 warning, it told manufacturers and retailers that claims about eliminating rodents or repelling insects need scientific support. In 2002, the FTC alleged that electronic mosquito-repellent claims were false and that sellers lacked evidence for ultrasonic pest-control claims. These are historical agency actions, not findings about every product currently sold.
