Those labels can describe different parts of a tub’s construction: acrylic surfaces may be reinforced with fiberglass, while some fiberglass tubs use a polyester gel-coat surface. Compare the specific model’s documented materials, dimensions, drain position, support requirements, and warranty before choosing.
What “plastic bathtub” means
Plastic is a broad category, not a single construction method. Duravit describes forming an acrylic blank and reinforcing it with wood and fiberglass. HUD’s housing guide describes fiberglass reinforcement beneath a polyester gel-coat finish and discusses acrylic and ABS sheets as thermoformed tub materials. In other words, “acrylic versus fiberglass” may compare a bathing surface with structural reinforcement rather than two mutually exclusive materials. Check the product documentation for both the exposed surface and backing.
Kohler describes acrylic as smooth, easy to clean, and resistant to chipping and cracking. That is the manufacturer’s general material claim, not a guarantee that every model is damage-proof. Kohler’s wording is: “Acrylic is a strong, flex-resistant material, acrylic has a smooth finish that resists chipping and cracking for years of performance and is easy to clean.” Kohler’s bathtub buying guide presents this as a product-material description, not an independent comparative test.
Choose the installation style that fits the room
Begin with the bathroom layout and intended use. Kohler’s guide describes alcove tubs as designed for a space with walls on three sides, including tub-and-shower combinations. Royal Baths’ style guide lists acrylic alcove, corner, drop-in, freestanding, and skirted models. These formats differ in how they meet the walls, floor, and surrounding finish, so select a type that works with the existing room or planned remodel before comparing surface materials.

Alcove
An alcove tub sits within a three-wall opening and is a common choice where the tub also serves as a shower base. Confirm the opening dimensions and drain location against the exact model and plumbing layout.
Drop-in, freestanding, corner, and skirted
These styles have different space and finishing requirements. Verify how the model is supported and enclosed, what clearances it needs, and whether any skirt, frame, or other components are included or sold separately. A style name alone does not establish that a tub will fit the room.
Check fit, capacity, and installation requirements
Use the selected model’s specification sheet and installation manual rather than category averages. Confirm each item before ordering:

- Opening and exterior size: Measure the available space, then compare it with the model’s stated dimensions and any required clearance.
- Installation type and drain: Match the tub style and drain position to the room and existing plumbing.
- Capacity and weight: Review the listed values for the specific model, and consider how the tub will be moved into the bathroom.
- Support and accessories: Check what base, frame, anchors, drain and overflow parts, cladding, or other components are required and whether they are included.
- Delivery route: Measure doors, hallways, stairs, and turns along the route to the installation area; a large tub can be difficult to maneuver regardless of material.
- Installation guidance: Follow the correct model’s manual and local requirements. Duravit says its tubs require additional installation accessories and recommends professional installation; those instructions should not be assumed to apply to other brands or models.
Example: one Royal Baths alcove model
Royal Baths lists its Excellence 6-Foot acrylic alcove tub at approximately 72.25 × 45 × 20 inches, 140 pounds, and 65 gallons, with an end drain. The manufacturer labels the dimensions, weight, and capacity approximate. The product page says the tub can be ordered as a soaker/garden tub or with six standard jets. Compare comfort and value by the whole project
A material label cannot tell you whether a tub will feel comfortable or be the best value in your bathroom. Compare the factors that affect the installed result:
- Room and installation fit: Style, dimensions, drain location, support needs, and whether professional installation is recommended.
- Surface and construction: The documented bathing-surface material, reinforcement, and model-specific warranty.
- Intended use: The shape and bathing well, plus whether you want a simple soaker or a model with jets. The available product information does not establish an independent comfort comparison.
- Total project cost: Tub price, required accessories, delivery, and local installation costs. Current comparable pricing is not established here, so a reliable price ranking is not possible.
- Care and repair: The model’s cleaning instructions and warranty terms, including what kinds of damage are covered.
Acrylic is available in a broad range of styles, and manufacturers describe it as lightweight. Those characteristics may make it a practical option, but they do not establish a universal price advantage or a fixed service life. Compare the actual models and project costs rather than assuming one plastic category is always cheaper or longer-lasting.

Care for the tub according to its manufacturer
Duravit’s acrylic-tub care guidance recommends removing deposits regularly and wiping the surface with a soft cloth or sponge and mild detergent. Royal Baths’ care information warns that some products can scratch or dull acrylic surfaces. Use the care sheet for the exact model; do not assume abrasive pads or strong chemicals are safe unless its manufacturer says they are.
Read the warranty as a model-specific offer
Warranty length and coverage vary by manufacturer and product. Royal Baths advertises a 10-year limited warranty for the cited Excellence model. Review the product’s warranty document for conditions and exclusions, and do not treat that term as an industry-wide standard. A longer stated warranty also does not replace checking the installation requirements and care instructions.
