Best Plants for Stormy Weather: Wind-Resistant and Hardy Choices

Storm-ready planting starts by matching species to the local hazard. Compare extension recommendations for the Carolinas, Central Oregon, and coastal Florida, then plan a windbreak for your site.

The best plants for storm-prone yards depend on what the weather brings: wind, ice and snow, coastal salt spray, and winter cold are different stresses. For a windbreak, choose plants suited to your local climate and soil, then plan the row design and establishment care. Regional extension guidance offers useful starting points—not a universal list of storm-proof plants.

Match plants to the storm hazard

A plant that tolerates salt spray may not withstand heavy ice, and a tree that is wind-resistant in one region may be poorly suited to another. Start by identifying the main exposure at your site:

  • Wind: Look for locally recommended species and consider mature height, crown form, and how much air can pass through the planting.
  • Ice and snow: Select for local winter conditions and branch structure, not just wind tolerance.
  • Coastal salt spray: Use plants recommended for the region’s salt exposure; wind tolerance alone does not establish broader storm survivability.
  • Cold: Check winter hardiness for your location as well as the other hazards.

Soil, drainage, exposure, intended use, and establishment needs all affect whether a plant will succeed. Use local extension guidance and confirm that a species and cultivar fit the specific site.

Regional plant choices for storm-prone sites

Carolinas: trees for wind, snow, and ice

For landscapes in the Carolinas, NC State Extension recommends considering crape myrtle, bald cypress, hickory, ironwood, ginkgo, and white oak as replacements for trees damaged by wind, snow, or ice. Its guidance identifies Leyland cypress, lacebark elm, Bradford pear, water oak, silver maple, green ash, willow, and pecan as weak-wooded trees more likely to be damaged under those conditions. These are regional recommendations, not a guarantee for every cultivar or site. See NC State Extension’s guidance on preventing and managing ice and snow damage, updated September 10, 2026.

Central Oregon: trees and shrubs for windbreaks

Oregon State University Extension’s Central Oregon windbreak list includes Chinese, western, Rocky Mountain, and eastern redcedars; bristlecone, limber, mugo, Austrian, and ponderosa pines; and Black Hills and Colorado spruce. Shrub options include chokecherry, sumacs, golden currant, shrub roses, and silver buffaloberry. The publication dates to November 2005 and was reviewed in 2024, so treat it as a regional starting point and check current local availability and site suitability. See Oregon State Extension’s Central Oregon windbreak plant list.

Coastal Florida: plants for salt spray and wind

For coastal Florida landscapes, UF/IFAS identifies beach sunflower, gaillardia, and seaside goldenrod as wind- and salt-tolerant choices. Its salt-tolerant plant guidance also names saltmeadow cordgrass, muhly grass, Fakahatchee grass, and sea oats as at least moderately salt tolerant, and live oak, southern red cedar, and mangrove as trees able to handle salt. Suitability and hardiness zones vary across Florida. Coastal plants still need fresh water to thrive; watering during establishment or periods of stress can support long-term success. See UF/IFAS Gardening Solutions’ salt-tolerant plant guidance and consult your county Extension office for a site-specific choice.

How to choose plants for a windbreak

A windbreak is one or more rows of trees or shrubs. Its usefulness depends on selecting suitable species and designing the planting for the job. Minnesota Extension distinguishes design goals such as crop and soil protection, snow control, and energy, noise, or wildlife benefits; its density guidance is regional and goal-specific, not a universal spacing rule. Its recommendations favor winter-hardy plants suited to local soils, a mix of species to reduce the risk that one failure defeats the row, and native plants when possible. See University of Minnesota Extension’s windbreak selection guidance.

  1. Set the goal. Decide whether you need a screen, a single specimen, or a windbreak for a particular purpose, such as soil protection or snow management.
  2. Check the site. Confirm local climate and winter hardiness, soil and drainage, exposure, and the amount of space available.
  3. Plan the mature planting. Consider evergreen or deciduous habit, mature height and spread, growth rate, crown form and porosity, shade, and root depth. For multiple rows, check that the species are compatible.
  4. Review plant health and availability. Consider pests and disease, native status, invasiveness, and whether appropriate plants are available locally.
  5. Plan establishment care. Check water needs and maintenance before planting. Drought during the early years of windbreak establishment can make irrigation critical; coastal plants may also need fresh water during establishment or stress.

UF/IFAS’s windbreak species and attributes guidance for Florida describes selection factors including habit, mature height, growth rate, crown porosity, tolerance, establishment requirements, pests, invasiveness, availability, and compatibility in multi-row designs. Use those factors with guidance for your own region rather than assuming Florida recommendations apply elsewhere.

Reduce avoidable tree damage

Plant selection is only part of resilience. In the Carolinas, NC State Extension recommends selectively pruning young trees to encourage good structure and strong branching. It notes that narrow branch angles increase the likelihood of a branch breaking or splitting. For narrow upright evergreens with multiple leaders, its guidance describes temporarily tying them before heavy snow and removing the binding after the snow melts. Follow local guidance for the species and conditions at your property.
