Keep live plants away from fireplace heat and heating vents, then choose greenery for the room’s light and your household. Seasonal cut greenery is different: it can dry out and become a fire hazard.
Can you put a plant beside or above a fireplace?
It’s better not to. Oregon State University Extension advises keeping houseplants away from fireplaces and heating vents to prevent drafts and heat stress. The guidance does not specify a universal clearance distance, so don’t treat any particular number of inches as a proven safe minimum.
That applies whether you are considering a plant on the mantel, beside the firebox, or above a gas fireplace. Choose a location outside the fireplace’s heat and drafts. Heather Stoven, a horticulturist with Oregon State University Extension, puts it simply: “Make sure you buy for location.” The extension’s houseplant guidance also advises keeping leaves away from cold glass.
Choose a plant for the room’s light
Once you have a location away from heat and vents, match a plant to the light there. These are options for the fireplace room, not recommendations for the mantel itself. Oregon State University Extension groups the following houseplants by light level:

| Room light | Plants listed by Oregon State University Extension | Household note |
|---|---|---|
| Low light | Pothos, snake plant, lucky bamboo | Pothos and snake plant are marked as plants to avoid if children or pets might chew or ingest them. |
| Low to medium light | Peace lily, dracaena | Both are marked as plants to avoid if children or pets might chew or ingest them. |
| Medium light | Weeping fig, African violet, Boston fern, dumb cane | The extension’s asterisk warning does not apply to these entries. |
| Bright indirect light | Anthurium, spider plant, palm, peperomia | The extension’s asterisk warning does not apply to these entries. |
The asterisk is Oregon State University Extension’s caution to skip starred plants if children or pets might chew or ingest them. This is a practical household screen, not a claim that every unstarred plant is safe to eat.
Low-light option: pothos
Pothos is one choice for a dimmer part of the room, provided it stays away from fireplace heat and vents. Because the extension flags it for possible harm if chewed or ingested, choose another plant if a child or pet might reach it.

Care for a live plant through winter
- Use a container with drainage holes.
- In winter, water lightly and only when the potting mix is dry.
- Keep the plant away from fireplace heat, heating vents, and cold glass.
These care points come from Oregon State University Extension’s houseplant guidance. A plant’s light and watering needs still matter even when it is being used as seasonal room decor.

Cut greenery on a mantel needs a different safety check
A living potted plant is not the same as a wreath, garland, or cut branches displayed for the holidays. Cut greenery can dry out. In a 1995 University of Georgia Extension article, forestry specialist Kim Coder warned: “Dry, brittle greenery only needs one spark to go up in flames.” The University of Georgia article offers these checks and precautions:
- Check freshness: needles that bend are an indicator of freshness; needles that break or come off indicate greenery is too dry and should be replaced.
- Replace greenery as it dries. The article’s general tip says to replace it weekly.
- Keep heat sources pointed toward the center of the room and away from greenery.
- Dispose of dry greenery away from the house or garage.
- Do not assume a treated or coated wreath is fireproof. The article cautions that treated greenery can still burn, plastic can melt, and a wreath’s core can catch fire.
This is attributed extension advice, not a current fire code or a guarantee that any arrangement is safe near a fireplace.

Why “fire-resistant” landscaping plants are not fireplace plants
Outdoor wildfire guidance addresses vegetation around structures, not the placement of a houseplant near an indoor flame. UF/IFAS materials describe landscape traits such as high moisture, broad thick leaves, low oil or chemical content, open branching, and limited dead material as factors that can lower landscape flammability. They also state that no plants are fireproof. Those traits do not establish how close a plant can sit to a fireplace.
UF/IFAS Gardening Solutions notes that succulents such as cacti, aloe, and century plants usually retain moisture and take longer to ignite. That observation is not an endorsement to put one beside a fireplace. Choose indoor greenery for the room’s light and keep it outside the fireplace’s heat and drafts.
