The best pillow fort is a simple, stable setup that suits the space and gives everyone inside something fun to do. Start with chairs or a sofa, sheets or light blankets, and cushions you already have; then turn the fort into a reading cave, pretend campsite, movie den, or game clubhouse.
Choose a fort that fits your room and your plans
These ideas use ordinary household furniture and bedding. Pick a low, stable base, keep the entrance obvious, and tailor the footprint to the activity rather than trying to build the biggest possible fort.
Chair-and-sheet classic
Arrange sturdy chairs with space between them and drape a sheet or light blanket across the backs to make a roof. Clothes pegs or clips can help hold the fabric in place. Add cushions or a blanket on the floor, and leave a clear entrance. This is the versatile starting point for a reading nook, club, or small playhouse. Scouts UK describes a four- or six-chair arrangement; TAPS lists chairs, sheets or blankets, pillows, cushions, and clothes pins among the materials.
Armchair reading cave
Drape bedding over the back of an armchair, then put a cushion and a book inside. The compact footprint makes this a practical choice for a quiet reading spot or a small room. IKEA suggests the armchair as a quick cave-style fort.

Clothes-rack camping tent
A clothes rack can form the frame for a small tent. Fasten lighter throws or bed linen near the top with clothes pegs, and use cushions to help hold the sides out. This is an IKEA-suggested layout; check the rack is stable before play and do not assume every rack will suit the setup.
Sofa fortress with rooms
Stand sofa seat cushions upright and drape throws over them to create sections. IKEA describes a possible two-room arrangement using a three-seat sofa. Add other cushions and blankets for comfort, but use the layout only if the sofa cushions and fabric stay in place in your room.

Build the fort in a few simple steps
- Choose the spot. Use an open floor area with enough room around the fort. Keep doorways, walking routes, and emergency exits clear.
- Pick a low, stable base. Use sturdy chairs or a sofa. Avoid relying on unsecured tall furniture, and do not have children climb on furniture to assemble the fort.
- Add a light roof. Drape sheets or light blankets over the base and secure them with clips or clothes pegs if needed. Put pillows and cushions on the floor rather than piling heavy items overhead.
- Make a clear entrance. Leave a wide, obvious way in and out, with enough interior room for the people who will use the fort.
- Choose the activity. Put books, paper games, coloring supplies, or a simple pretend-play prompt inside before adding decorations.
- Check the setup again. Confirm the furniture is stable, fabric is away from hot equipment, and wires will not tangle, cross a walking route, or block the exit.
Give the fort a purpose
Indoor camping hideout
Make a tent-like layout and bring in a sleeping bag, books, and a flashlight for pretend camping or stories. Scholastic suggests drawing the blinds and switching off overhead lights to create a nighttime feel, then reading together by flashlight. Prepare snacks and do any cooking in the kitchen before bringing food into the fort.
Movie-night den
Make a little room for an adult and children, bring popcorn, and watch a family movie together. One idea from Scholastic is to watch a movie based on a book everyone has read, then compare the two. Position electronics and cords so they do not heat fabric, create trip hazards, or obstruct the entrance.

Book nook or story club
Put picture books or storybooks inside and take turns reading. You can also tell original stories or make the fort a quiet place to look through books. Scouts UK includes books and storytelling among its suggested fort activities; Scholastic suggests keeping a popular reading nook as a more permanent setup after playtime.
Game and craft clubhouse
Use the fort as a base for coloring, dot-to-dot, mazes, a puzzle, simple mess-free crafts, music, or a teddy-bear picnic. These are among the activities suggested by Scouts UK. Choose supplies that fit inside without cluttering the entrance.

Pretend-play hideout
Let children name the fort and decide what it is: a secret club, playhouse, campsite, or imaginary destination. A made-up purpose is enough to get the game started; elaborate decorations are optional.

A kit is optional, not a prerequisite. For a simple build, a few household items and a suitable open spot are all the plan requires.
Keep the fort safe and accessible
- Check stability. Scouts UK advises checking that chairs will not tip when sheets are added. Do not pull, climb, or hang heavy blankets from unstable furniture. The CPSC’s general home guidance warns that furniture and appliances can tip and crush children and advises anchoring them to a wall or floor; it does not specifically test pillow forts.
- Protect exits and routes. Keep doors, pathways, and emergency exits clear, and leave sufficient room for mobility aids, as Scouts UK advises.
- Keep fabric clear of heat and manage lights. Do not cover hot equipment with sheets. Scouts UK recommends battery-powered string lights and cautions against tangled wires; keep cords away from fabric and walking routes.
- Match supervision to the setup. A build that works in one room may not be suitable in another. Consider the child, furniture, materials, and space, and supervise accordingly.
- Keep infant sleep separate from fort play. CPSC safe-sleep guidance is for babies’ sleep environments, not a general ban on supervised fort play by older children. Young babies should sleep in an appropriate crib, bassinet, play yard, or bedside sleeper with only a fitted sheet—not among pillows or blankets. Move a baby who falls asleep elsewhere to a suitable sleep product.
