For most electric stoves, start with a flat-bottom wok or stir-fry pan that sits securely on the cooking zone. On a glass cooktop, its base should be flat and smooth; on induction, it must also be magnetic-compatible. The best choice depends on whether your stove uses coil, radiant glass, or induction—not on a promise of perfect results every time.
Which pan works best on your electric stove?
“Electric stove” covers different cooking surfaces, and their cookware requirements are not interchangeable. Identify your cooktop first, then check its owner’s manual before buying a pan.
Coil cooktops
GE Appliances’ coil and radiant cooktop manual says, “We recommend that you use only a flat-bottomed wok.” A stable, flat base makes contact with the coil rather than balancing on a rounded bottom. GE also recommends medium- or heavy-weight cookware and cautions that steel pans may cook unevenly if they are not combined with other metals. Its guidance says cookware should not extend beyond the surface unit by more than one inch; treat that as GE’s recommendation for the covered cooktops, not a universal rule for every model. Read the GE Appliances cooktop manual.
Radiant glass cooktops
For radiant glass, GE recommends stainless steel and heavy-weight aluminum. Check the base with a straight edge: it should be flat, not rounded, curved, ridged, or warped. A smooth underside also helps avoid scratching the cooking surface. Follow your appliance manual for any additional restrictions. See GE Appliances’ radiant cooktop guidance.

Induction cooktops
Induction requires more than a flat base: the cookware must be magnetically compatible. GE Appliances Canada’s manual for the PHP900SM1SS says to use a flat-bottomed wok and advises matching the wok base diameter to the induction ring. Check the manual for your exact cooktop and the cookware maker’s compatibility information before purchase. Consult GE Appliances Canada’s induction cooktop guidance.
What to check before you buy
- Base shape and contact: Choose a flat-bottom pan that sits steadily on the cooking zone. For glass, look for a smooth, undamaged base.
- Size: Match the base to the burner or induction ring, and check the appliance manual for sizing limits. The pan’s advertised width is not necessarily the diameter of its cooking base.
- Construction: Use cooktop-specific advice rather than assuming one material is best everywhere. GE’s guidance recommends medium- or heavy-weight cookware on coil and stainless steel or heavy-weight aluminum on radiant glass.
- Weight and handling: A larger or heavier pan can hold more food but may be harder to lift and toss, especially when full. Consider whether you plan to stir with a utensil instead.
- Upkeep: Traditional steel cookware is seasoned; coated cookware has a different care routine. Ideal Home notes that nonstick cookware cannot be seasoned in the same way as traditional steel.
- Handles and clearance: Check the handle design and length against your stove layout, storage, and ability to maneuver the pan safely.
Why a round-bottom wok is usually a poor fit
A traditional round-bottom wok is designed to sit in a compatible support system, not directly on a flat electric cooking surface. GE’s cited cooktop guidance warns against using woks with support rings and recommends a flat bottom. Do not improvise with a ring unless your appliance maker explicitly approves that setup; an unstable pan is a safety and cooking problem.

A reviewed example—and what it does not prove
Ideal Home’s review of the HexClad Hybrid 30cm Wok reports that it is suitable for electric and induction hobs. Reviewer Helen McCue cooked vegetable stir-fries and sticky chilli paneer, describing the wok as roomy; she also reported that its 1.6 kg weight meant tossing was a two-handed task. Those are that publication’s reported experiences, not a controlled comparison across coil, radiant-glass, and induction stoves. The example illustrates a trade-off between capacity and handling, not a universal winner. Read Ideal Home’s wok review.

Pan fit is only one part of the result. Electric cooktops and pans differ, and this guidance does not establish a guaranteed cooking time or performance level. These practical steps help you make better use of a compatible pan without assuming that an electric stove behaves like a restaurant wok burner.

We solemnly promise: a 12-hour response time for any product issues, a 12-month warranty, and a 30-day money-back guarantee.
- Confirm the fit: Set the empty pan on the intended zone and check that it sits securely. For glass, make sure the base is clean and smooth; for induction, verify compatibility.
- Prepare ingredients before heating: Cut food into similarly sized pieces and have sauces and aromatics ready. Stir-frying moves quickly once ingredients are in the pan.
- Avoid crowding: Cook in smaller batches if ingredients pile up across the cooking surface. Overloading makes it harder to keep food moving and can encourage steaming rather than browning.
- Keep food moving: Stir or turn ingredients with utensils suited to your pan’s surface. A flat-bottom wok can be stirred effectively even if it is not designed for the dramatic tossing motion of a round-bottom wok.
- Use the appliance manual: Follow its cookware and heat-setting instructions. Adjust your approach to the response of your particular stove and pan rather than relying on a universal setting.
