What “overhead console” means in a vehicle
A vehicle overhead console sits above the windshield and attaches to the roof panel. GM describes consoles that can house controls, interior lighting, and storage for sunglasses or other small items. How to choose a replacement
- Confirm exact fitment. Check the vehicle’s year, make, model, trim, and roof configuration against the catalog listing. GM cautions buyers to confirm fit before purchase and installation.
- Match the functions. Verify which lights, controls, switches, or storage features are included rather than relying on the general name “roof console.”
- Check electrical details. Compare the listed connector and wiring requirements with the vehicle and the part number. Details from one listing are not universal specifications.
- Distinguish OE from aftermarket. GM says GM Genuine Parts are installed in production or validated by GM for its vehicles. That does not establish compatibility beyond the catalog’s stated fitment.
Because the available evidence is specific to GM, it does not support ranking consoles across vehicle brands. Use the automaker’s parts catalog or a qualified parts source to verify the exact replacement.
For homes, consider a ceiling-mounted garage storage rack

What to check before selecting a garage rack
- Ceiling structure and joist layout: Make sure the mounting method and spacing work with the actual ceiling and the rack’s instructions.
- Footprint and clearance: Compare the rack’s dimensions and height adjustment range with the available ceiling space, stored items, and anything that needs to pass or operate below it.
- Capacity for the exact model: Use the manufacturer’s figure for the model being considered, and do not choose by headline capacity alone.
- Retention and access: Check edge or retention features and whether the rack’s layout suits the items you plan to store and retrieve.
- Installation: Confirm whether professional installation is available or appropriate for the mounting conditions.
Which option is right for you?
If you mean the component inside a car, start with the vehicle’s exact fitment and the console’s included functions. If you mean overhead storage at home, compare ceiling-mounted garage racks against your structure, clearances, and storage needs. They solve different problems and are not interchangeable.
