Onion goggles can reduce eye irritation if they fit closely enough to block onion vapors from reaching your eyes. They are not a guaranteed cure, and no available evidence establishes one best brand. Prioritize a secure seal, clear vision, comfort, and compatibility with prescription glasses—and don’t chop if the lenses fog or the fit interferes with safe knife handling.
How onion goggles work
Cutting an onion damages its cells and releases compounds that lead to a volatile, sulfur-containing irritant. When that vapor reaches the eyes, it causes irritation and reflex tears. Goggles work as a physical barrier around the eyes; they do not stop the irritant from reaching your nose, so they may not eliminate every discomfort. Poison Control explains why onions make you cry.
Do onion goggles really work?
They may help when they create a close seal, but the evidence does not support a guaranteed result or a definitive brand ranking. The available comparisons are personal trials, not controlled studies measuring effectiveness across a group of people.
In a one-person test, Scientific American writer Janet D. Stemwedel reported “No agony!” while wearing swim goggles. She tried each method once, had no untreated control, and cautioned that individual results could differ. An ABC writer also rated sealed goggles highly in a personal test. Dr. Vyom Sharma, a GP and science commentator interviewed by ABC, put the evidence plainly: “It’s not like someone’s scientifically sought out the best method.” Scientific American’s trial and ABC’s comparison support treating goggles as a potentially useful barrier, not a proven universal solution.

What to look for when choosing onion goggles
- A close, comfortable seal: The barrier only helps if the goggles sit close around the eyes. Gaps can let vapor through. A very tight fit may be uncomfortable, so look for a balance you can tolerate while working.
- Compatibility with glasses: Do not assume specialty onion goggles fit over prescription eyewear. A reviewer who tried several models could not wear the tested onion goggles over glasses; Cajun Ninja also says its model does not fit over eyeglasses. If you need your glasses, seek protective goggles specifically designed to fit over them and verify the dimensions before buying.
- Clear vision and low fogging: Check lens treatment and user feedback, but regard “fog-free” as a manufacturer claim rather than established performance. If the lenses fog or distort your view, take the goggles off before handling a knife.
- Care instructions: Follow the product’s cleaning directions. Cajun Ninja, for example, advises wiping its goggles with a clean, lint-free cloth. Check the manufacturer’s product guidance.
A consumer review found mixed results among specialty onion-goggle styles; in that reviewer’s test, sealed swim and safety goggles performed better, though the swim goggles were uncomfortable because of tight suction. These are individual observations, not a controlled head-to-head ranking. Read the reviewer’s comparison.
Do swim goggles work for cutting onions?
A well-sealed pair may block onion vapor from reaching the eyes, which is why swim goggles can be a plausible alternative to specialty onion goggles. But fit and comfort vary, and tight suction can make them unpleasant to wear. Choose a pair that seals without hurting or restricting your vision; never trade safe knife handling for a tighter seal.

Other ways to reduce onion tears
Use a sharp knife
A sharp, thin blade may crush fewer onion cells than a blunt one, potentially releasing less of the irritating compounds. Sharma told ABC that the difference made a practical difference for him, but it is not a promise that a sharp knife will prevent tears. Keep the blade in good condition and use it safely.
Move airflow across the work area
A fan may help carry vapors away from your face. ABC’s writer found a desktop fan helpful in a personal test; Scientific American’s one-person trial found that a fan delayed symptoms relative to the other tested methods. Neither result establishes how much it helps people generally.

Chill the onion
Cooling may slow reactions or the release of volatile compounds, but the personal tests cited by ABC and Scientific American found limited or variable results. Freezing can affect onion texture, according to Scientific American.
Treat folk remedies cautiously
Water, bread, candles, and similar tricks are not established solutions. ABC’s writer found cutting under running water awkward and risky with a knife. Avoid any method that makes the cutting task harder to control.

What the available timing results do—and do not—show
In Stemwedel’s approximately 2015 trial, one person tested each intervention once. The reported observations were 46 seconds for bread, 62 seconds for a metal spoon, 80 seconds for a candle, 86 seconds for a chilled onion, and 106 seconds for a fan; swim goggles were recorded as “No agony!” The author noted there was no untreated control. These figures describe that single test only: they are not population averages, comparative success rates, or evidence that one approach will work for you.

If onion vapors reliably bother your eyes, goggles with a comfortable, close seal are a reasonable option to try. Choose for fit and safe visibility rather than a brand claim: available tests do not establish an objectively best model. If you wear prescription glasses, confirm over-glasses compatibility before buying.
