A non-vented range hood filters cooking air and returns it to the kitchen; it does not carry that air outdoors. The right choice depends on your hood’s fit and configuration, the filter or conversion parts it needs, and what the manufacturer says about operation and installation. No independent head-to-head testing here establishes one model as the best overall, so treat the products below as examples—not rankings.
What a non-vented range hood does—and what it does not
A non-vented, non-ducted, or ductless hood draws air through filters and sends it back into the kitchen. A ducted hood instead exhausts air outdoors. Some models can be installed either way; for a ductless setup, they may require a particular charcoal filter, conversion kit, or both. Requirements vary by model, so check the exact product page and installation manual. Broan-NuTone explains the ducted and ductless distinction and model-specific parts.
Because a recirculating hood returns air indoors, do not assume it removes all cooking pollutants, moisture, heat, or gases from the home. The U.S. Environmental Protection Agency’s 2024 Indoor airPLUS Version 2 verification requirements allow recirculation only in a limited multifamily exception: the kitchen must also have an electric cooktop, a charcoal-filter hood, and qualifying continuous kitchen exhaust vented outdoors. That is a specific program provision, not a general endorsement of ductless hoods as equivalent to outdoor exhaust.
How to choose a hood for your kitchen
Confirm the configuration and parts
- Check whether the exact model is ductless-only or convertible. “Ductless capable” does not necessarily mean it is ready to install without extra parts.
- Confirm whether a charcoal filter or conversion kit is included, sold separately, or not applicable. Match any replacement filter to the hood’s model or compatible product family.
- If you plan to use a ducted configuration, follow the manual’s outdoor-exhaust instructions. Broan says not to exhaust into wall, ceiling, attic, crawl-space, or garage cavities. See Broan-NuTone’s installation guidance.
Check physical fit and installation form
Measure the available space and compare it with the hood’s width and installation style. Under-cabinet and chimney hoods are different configurations, and a recirculation kit made for one hood family is not automatically compatible with another. Check the product specifications and installation manual for the particular model before ordering.

Compare the specifications that affect daily use
Compare listed fan speeds, noise ratings, warranty, and replacement-filter availability. If a manufacturer reports capture efficiency, look for the test method as well as the result; a number without testing context is difficult to compare. EPA recommends at least 70% capture efficiency for range hoods and microwave-range hoods tested under ASTM E3087 or an equivalent method in its 2024 Indoor airPLUS Version 2 document. This is an EPA program recommendation—not a universal legal requirement—and it does not establish that the example models below meet the threshold. Read the EPA program requirements.

Installation clearances and filter upkeep
Use the instructions for your exact hood
Do not treat one model’s clearance as a universal standard. One Broan economy hood guide specifies a minimum of 18 inches above an electric cooking surface and 26 inches above a gas cooking surface, with a recommended maximum of 30 inches. Those figures apply to the hood family covered by that guide; follow the manual for your model and applicable local requirements. Read the Broan installation guide.
Plan for the correct replacement filter
Charcoal filters are model-specific consumables. Before buying, identify the hood’s exact model number and confirm the replacement filter listed by its manufacturer; a filter that fits a similar-looking hood may not be compatible. A convertible hood may need a separate charcoal filter or conversion kit for recirculating operation.
