For food context, the FDA says that no PFAS were detected above its method detection limit in over 95% (1,290 of 1,352) of fresh and processed foods tested from its Total Diet Study. That result describes those tested samples, not toaster emissions or every food sold. How to evaluate PFAS- and PTFE-free claims
- Find the exact model. Use the model number to check the current manufacturer specification page and manual; product names can cover different versions.
- Identify what the claim covers. Look for wording that names the coating or component—such as the interior, food-contact surface, rack, or accessories—rather than relying on a broad front-page label.
- Distinguish the chemicals named. “PFOA-free” is not interchangeable with “PFAS-free.” A PTFE-free claim also has a different scope from a claim about all PFAS.
- Ask when wording is unclear. Request confirmation from the manufacturer about the exact model and the specific surfaces or parts you care about.
- Weigh the evidence. A manufacturer disclosure is useful, but it is not the same as an independent chemical analysis. Do not infer that a product is safer in clinical terms from a label alone.
Krups’ disclosure page lists several toaster models and says covered kitchen electrics contain stainless steel, aluminum, and PFAS chemicals. Because the disclosure is category-level and includes multiple references, it should not be treated as confirmation that every listed chemical is present in every toaster.
