For hand-washing dishes, look for a specific product with a current EPA Safer Choice listing, a fragrance-free formula if you want to avoid added scent, and an ingredient list you can review. “Non-toxic” is not a precise certification, and the available evidence does not establish that any dish liquid is risk-free or cleans better than another. Seventh Generation Hand Dish Liquid is one documented option, but it is not a tested winner; check its exact scent variant and current listing before buying.
What “non-toxic” can—and cannot—tell you
“Non-toxic” is a broad label, not a guarantee that a product is harmless in every situation. A more useful approach is to check verifiable details: whether the exact product appears in EPA’s Safer Choice search, whether it is fragrance-free, and whether the maker publishes its ingredients.
EPA’s Safer Choice program evaluates ingredients within functional classes, considering human-health and environmental characteristics. The current standard identified by EPA is the August 2024 version. Certification provides a defined review standard; it does not establish that a product is risk-free for every person or use. See the EPA Safer Choice Standard and Criteria and EPA’s product search.
Hand dish liquid is not dishwasher detergent
This guide covers liquid detergent used for hand-washing dishes. Automatic dishwasher detergents—including pods and powders—are formulated for a different appliance and use. Choose a product labeled for your washing method rather than treating the categories as interchangeable. The EWG dishwashing directory separates hand-washing detergent from dishwasher detergent, rinse aid, pods, and baby-bottle soap.

How to compare hand dish liquids
- Use: Confirm the label says it is for hand dishwashing.
- Certification: Search the exact product in EPA’s live Safer Choice database. The database was last updated October 6, 2026, and offers a fragrance-free filter. EPA notes that a ‡ beside a product means its partner company is overdue for its yearly partnership review.
- Scent and formula: Check the exact variant. A brand’s fragrance-free product may have a different ingredient list from its scented version.
- Ingredient disclosure: Prefer a product page that lists ingredients for the precise formula you plan to use.
- Packaging: Treat recycled-content statements as manufacturer claims. They do not establish that your local recycling program accepts the bottle.
- Performance: Cleaning claims are comparable only when supported by relevant tests. The product information summarized here does not establish a head-to-head cleaning-performance winner.
Certification, formulas, listings, and stock can change. Check the live EPA listing and manufacturer page for the exact product before purchasing.

Seventh Generation Hand Dish Liquid
Seventh Generation’s Yuzu Basil with Phytogaia product page describes a 19 fl oz hand dish liquid and says it is EPA Safer Choice certified, USDA Certified Biobased 95%, and packaged in a bottle made from 100% recycled plastic. These are manufacturer-displayed claims, not independent comparative safety or performance findings. The page lists Free & Clear as a scent variant, but the ingredient list shown for the scented product should not be assumed to apply to Free & Clear. Confirm the exact variant’s current formula and EPA listing.

The company also says its dish liquids can be used to clean baby bottles; that is manufacturer guidance, not independent testing. Details are on the Seventh Generation product page.
Better Than Clean Sensitive Home Dish Soap
The manufacturer describes this dish soap as fragrance-free and claims EPA Safer Choice Fragrance Free status, USDA BioPreferred status, and an EWG A rating. It publishes ingredients and says the product has been third-party tested for cleaning performance. The complete dish-soap test report was not available in the reviewed materials, so these remain company claims rather than independently assessed results here. The two-pack page displayed “Sold out” when accessed; check current stock and certification before treating it as a purchasable option. See the Better Than Clean product page.

What to check before you buy
- Decide whether you need hand dish liquid or automatic dishwasher detergent.
- Search the exact product name in EPA’s Safer Choice product search; use its fragrance-free filter if that matters to you.
- Open the manufacturer’s page for the exact scent or formula and compare its ingredient list with the product listing at the retailer.
- Confirm current size, availability, and any refill format on the seller’s live listing. Do not assume an old product page or a matching brand name guarantees that the formula is identical.
EWG’s dishwashing directory can help identify further candidates, including entries for brands such as AspenClean and ATTITUDE. A directory result alone is not a substitute for checking the exact current product entry and ingredient details.
