For home moisture, start by finding and correcting the source; use ventilation or an appropriately sized air conditioner or dehumidifier when needed.
Which natural dehumidifier should you use?
“Natural dehumidifier” is not a performance standard. Choose by the material, the space it is meant for, its moisture capacity and service life, and how safely it contains what it absorbs. The evidence supports different roles for calcium chloride and silica gel; it does not support relying on charcoal bags for meaningful moisture removal.

How the main passive absorbers compare
Calcium chloride: a localized absorber that needs containment
In a 2007 Hong Kong Consumer Council comparison, calcium-chloride products outperformed the tested silica-gel and charcoal products. The test evaluated agents at 25°C and 80% relative humidity over 80 days, so its results are a dated comparison under those conditions—not a guarantee for every current product.
Calcium chloride liquefies as it absorbs water. University of Missouri Extension warns that the material or resulting liquid can damage textiles if it contacts them. Use a stable, contained tub or product, follow its placement instructions, and keep it away from clothing and other vulnerable fabrics. In a separate 2021 report, tested small calcium-chloride pouches showed 19.9%–23.2% reverse-permeability of absorbed moisture. Those figures apply to the tested pouches, not all products.

Silica gel: useful inside an enclosure
Silica gel is a desiccant used to keep moisture-sensitive goods dry, including in packets for food and equipment. The Canadian Conservation Institute describes it as a common way to passively buffer relative humidity inside an enclosure, such as a display case. That is a different job from lowering humidity across an entire room.
Capacity is finite. In the Consumer Council’s 2021 test of 20 household moisture-absorber models, its two tested silica-gel models were almost fully saturated after around 14 days. This result is specific to those models and test conditions. For packets or canisters, follow the maker’s instructions for monitoring, recharging, or replacement; do not assume a product remains effective indefinitely.

Charcoal bags: do not confuse odor claims with moisture performance
The Consumer Council’s 2021 tests found average daily moisture removal close to zero for three reusable bamboo- or activated-charcoal models. That does not establish the performance of every charcoal formulation, but it is a reason not to choose one as a room-humidity solution based only on a “moisture absorber” label.
What consumer tests can—and cannot—tell you
Consumer comparisons help distinguish materials, but they are not universal product ratings. The 2007 test used specific agents under stated temperature and humidity conditions; the 2021 report examined 20 particular household products. Neither establishes how a current product listing will perform in your home.

The 2021 report also found that tested hanging wardrobe bags accumulated about 150 ml over 80 days despite claims of up to 1,000 ml. Treat that as a finding about the tested bags, not a general specification for wardrobe absorbers. Check a current product’s ingredients, stated capacity, intended space, containment, and care instructions before buying.

A passive absorber may be reasonable for a small, enclosed space, but room humidity calls for moisture management at the source. University of Minnesota Extension recommends identifying and reducing moisture sources first, then using ventilation or dehumidification as needed.

- Look for the source. Leaks, damp soil, unvented appliances, humidifiers, cooking, bathing, and humid outdoor air can all contribute to indoor moisture. Correct leaks and other avoidable sources rather than relying on an absorber to keep up.
- Check ventilation. Make sure exhaust ventilation is working where moisture is produced, such as kitchens and bathrooms. Ventilation choices should account for outdoor conditions; bringing humid outdoor air inside may not help.
- Use active equipment when the problem is room-sized. Extension guidance points to a properly sized air conditioner or standalone dehumidifier in summer where needed. Select equipment for the space and conditions rather than expecting packets or bags to control a whole room.
These steps are consistent with the Canadian Conservation Institute’s distinction between passive humidity buffering inside an enclosure and active systems used to bring room humidity to a set point. For persistent dampness, identify the building or moisture-source issue before choosing a product.
