Best Motion Sensors for Your Smart Home in 2026

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

The best smart-home sensor depends on what you need it to detect. Choose a PIR motion sensor for moving people in hallways, entrances, closets, and staircases. Choose a mmWave presence sensor for rooms where someone may sit still, such as a bathroom, bedroom, or home office.

For most new cross-platform installations, the Aqara Motion and Light Sensor P2 is the strongest all-round choice because it combines Matter over Thread with motion and light sensing. Eve Motion is the better privacy-focused and sheltered-outdoor option, while the Aqara P1 and SONOFF SNZB-03P make more sense for existing Zigbee systems. If your problem is lights switching off while you are still, look beyond ordinary motion sensors to the Aqara FP2, FP1E, or FP300.

Motion versus presence: the decision that matters most

PIR motion sensors

Passive infrared, or PIR, sensors detect changes in infrared radiation caused by moving people or animals. They are fast, inexpensive, and usually battery-powered, making them excellent for:

  • Hallways and staircases
  • Entryways and garages
  • Closets and utility rooms
  • Turning lights on when someone enters
  • Basic security notifications

PIR is not a direct test of whether a room is occupied. Someone sitting quietly may eventually stop producing enough movement for the sensor to report motion. A person walking directly toward the sensor can also be harder to detect than someone crossing its field of view. Sunlight, heating or cooling airflow, pets, and room geometry can create missed detections or false triggers.

mmWave presence sensors

Millimeter-wave radar sensors are designed to detect continued human presence, including small movements or near-stationary occupancy. They are better suited to bathrooms, offices, bedrooms, and reading areas where a PIR sensor may turn the lights off while someone remains in the room.

Presence sensing is not automatically better. It normally requires continuous power, needs more careful positioning, and can react to reflections or movement from fans, curtains, plants, HVAC equipment, furniture, or nearby structures. A simple PIR sensor remains the better product for many hallways and closets.

Best overall: Aqara Motion and Light Sensor P2

The Aqara Motion and Light Sensor P2 is the best starting point for most people building a new, cross-platform motion-sensing system.

It uses Matter over Thread, includes an independent light sensor, and is listed by Aqara as compatible with Aqara, Apple Home, Alexa, Google Home, SmartThings, Home Assistant, and Homey. Aqara rates its detection at up to 7 metres (23 feet) with a horizontal detection angle of up to 170 degrees. It uses two CR2450 batteries, with a claimed battery life of up to two years.

The light sensor is particularly useful for rules such as turning on a hallway light only when motion occurs and the room is already dim. The P2 is also a more flexible choice than the Aqara P1 for a new installation because it is positioned around Matter rather than requiring an Aqara Zigbee hub.

What to check before buying

Matter over Thread is not hub-free. You need a compatible Matter controller and a Thread border router. A Thread radio alone does not guarantee Matter support. Aqara also advertises enhanced P2 features when the sensor is connected through the Aqara Hub M3.

Compatibility does not mean identical functionality everywhere. Aqara specifically notes that the P2’s light-sensor functionality may not be available in Alexa. Check which entities—motion, illuminance, battery status, or configuration controls—your chosen platform exposes.

Best for privacy and sheltered outdoor use: Eve Motion

Eve Motion is the strongest choice when privacy, Apple Home, or placement in a protected outdoor location matters more than the lowest system cost.

Eve lists Matter over Thread, a 120-degree field of view, and a range of up to 9 metres (30 feet) at a mounting height of 2 metres (6.5 feet). It includes a light sensor, uses two replaceable AAA batteries, and has an IPX3 water-resistance rating. Eve says it requires no subscription, registration, or Eve cloud account.

IPX3 means water resistance, not unrestricted weatherproofing. Use it outdoors only where the installation is protected from direct exposure appropriate to that rating. The sensor still requires a hub that supports both Matter Controller and Thread Border Router functions. Eve’s most advanced app experience is particularly associated with Apple Home, while other platforms may expose a different set of controls and sensor values.

Best long-battery Aqara option: Aqara Motion Sensor P1

The Aqara Motion Sensor P1 is the practical choice for households that already own an Aqara Zigbee hub and want a conventional PIR sensor with a long claimed battery life.

It uses Zigbee 3.0, includes a light sensor, offers adjustable sensitivity, and allows a detection timeout from 1 to 200 seconds in Aqara Home. Aqara rates its detection distance at up to 7 metres and claims up to five years from two CR2430 batteries under stated conditions.

That five-year figure is not a guarantee of ownership life. Aqara’s conditions include disabling the LED indicator and using a detection timeout of at least 30 seconds. Detection frequency, temperature, signal conditions, and connected ecosystems also affect battery use.

The P1 requires an Aqara Zigbee 3.0 hub, and Aqara says it is not compatible with other-brand hubs. The hub may then expose the device to supported platforms such as Apple Home, Alexa, Google Home, or IFTTT. It is therefore a good ecosystem purchase, not a hub-free universal sensor.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Best Zigbee value: SONOFF SNZB-03P

The SONOFF SNZB-03P is a compelling candidate for cost-conscious Zigbee users deploying several sensors around a home.

It provides motion detection and ambient-light data, uses a CR2477 battery, and carries SONOFF’s claim of more than three years of battery life under specified laboratory conditions. SONOFF lists its ZBBridge-P, NSPanel Pro, or iHost as required gateway products for its ecosystem.

Home Assistant and other Zigbee coordinators may offer additional integration routes, but do not assume universal compatibility simply because both products use Zigbee. Verify the exact device support, entities, and configuration options in the coordinator or integration you plan to use. Zigbee’s maturity is a strength, but coordinator firmware, placement, channel selection, and mesh quality affect reliability.

Best sensors for people who sit still

If lights turn off while you are reading, working, or showering, buying another basic PIR sensor may not solve the problem. Consider a presence sensor instead.

Aqara FP2: advanced wired presence and zoning

The Aqara FP2 is intended for advanced presence detection rather than simple movement triggers. It is the model to consider when room-level occupancy and zones matter, such as distinguishing a desk, sofa, or bathroom area.

It is a more involved installation than a battery PIR sensor and requires careful placement and configuration. Because the FP2 is a powered Wi-Fi device, it is best suited to a permanent location with nearby power and a reliable network. It is excessive for a basic hallway-light automation.

Aqara FP1E: wired Zigbee presence

The Aqara FP1E uses 60–61 GHz radar, Zigbee, and USB-A power. Aqara states that an Aqara Zigbee 3.0 hub is required; the hub can provide Matter-over-bridge access to major platforms.

Philips Hue Motion Sensor, Exclusively for Philips Hue Smart Lights, 1-Pack | No-Wire Installation, Magnetic Mount or Screw Setup, Comes with Two AAA Batteries, Smart Home
  • WHAT'S IN THE BOX - Includes one Hue Motion Sensor and two AAA batteries; Automates your smart lights to respond to movement
  • REQUIRES A HUE BRIDGE - Unlock the power of Hue and enjoy automations control from anywhere in the world, and a secure, stable connection that won't drain your Wi-Fi. Use Matter to connect your smart home devices to your Hue smart lighting system.
  • TRIGGER LIGHTS WITH MOVEMENT - The wireless battery-powered Hue Motion Sensor automatically turns on your smart lights when movement is detected.
  • SET UP - Place anywhere wirelessly using a magnetic mount or a single screw.
  • PERSONALIZE YOUR LIGHT - Use the Hue app to customize your motion sensor and personalize your settings based on the time of day. Set your lights to turn on bright and cool in the morning. In the evenings trigger low golden tones - it's up to you!

That distinction matters: Matter over bridge is not the same as a native Matter-over-Thread device. The FP1E is a sensible choice for an existing Aqara installation that wants powered presence detection, but it is not suitable when battery power or a hub-free setup is essential.

Aqara FP300: battery presence plus environmental data

The Aqara FP300 combines presence detection with light, temperature, and humidity sensing. It supports both Thread and Zigbee, uses two CR2450 batteries, and Aqara claims up to three years in Zigbee mode or two years in Thread mode.

Aqara lists support for Aqara, Apple Home, Google Home, Alexa, SmartThings, Home Assistant, and Homey. Advanced customization is available in Zigbee mode through Aqara Home. The FP300 is attractive when environmental data and battery operation justify the added cost and complexity; it is unnecessary if all you need is a quick motion trigger.

Matter, Thread, Zigbee, and Wi-Fi in plain English

Technology Advantages Trade-offs Best fit
Matter over Thread Low-power mesh and a cross-platform direction Requires a Matter controller and Thread border router; features vary by platform New multi-platform homes
Zigbee Mature, low-power, and widely used for sensors Requires a coordinator or hub; compatibility depends on the integration Existing Zigbee and Home Assistant systems
Wi-Fi Uses familiar network infrastructure Usually needs more power and can add network traffic Powered sensors and homes avoiding a separate low-power radio

For Home Assistant, choose based on the infrastructure you already have. An existing Zigbee coordinator makes the P1, FP1E, or SNZB-03P more practical. An established Thread border router and Matter integration make the P2, Eve Motion, or FP300 in Thread mode more appealing. If Zigbee is unreliable, investigate coordinator firmware, USB placement, Wi-Fi interference, channel choice, and mesh routers before blaming the sensor. Home Assistant’s Matter documentation explains Matter and Thread requirements, while its Zigbee Home Automation documentation covers coordinator and network considerations.

Best choice by platform

Apple Home

  1. Choose Eve Motion for privacy, Matter/Thread, and protected outdoor placement.
  2. Choose Aqara P2 for Matter plus integrated light sensing.
  3. Choose Aqara P1 if you already have an Aqara hub.

Apple Home support does not guarantee that every vendor setting or sensor value appears in the Apple Home app.

Google Home

Start with Matter-over-Thread options such as Eve Motion or Aqara P2, provided you have compatible Thread and Matter infrastructure.

Amazon Alexa

The P2 is listed as Alexa-compatible, but Aqara says Alexa may not expose its light-sensor functionality. Confirm the exact automation trigger you need before purchase.

Samsung SmartThings

Matter-over-Thread models are a logical starting point, but verify that SmartThings exposes the desired motion, presence, illuminance, and battery entities.

Home Assistant

Your existing coordinator matters more than the logo on the sensor. Zigbee users should check device support and mesh quality; Matter users should confirm both controller and Thread border-router availability. Advanced mmWave zoning with the FP2 offers more capability but also more configuration and troubleshooting.

How to choose a sensor

1. Decide whether you need motion or occupancy

Use PIR when a moving person is the event you care about. Use mmWave presence when the automation must remain active while someone is still. A hybrid arrangement—PIR for fast entry and mmWave for continued occupancy—can be more dependable in difficult rooms.

2. Price the infrastructure, not just the sensor

A $20 sensor may require a proprietary hub, coordinator, bridge, border router, or Matter controller. Compare the complete system cost, especially if you are installing sensors in several rooms.

THIRDREALITY Zigbee Motion Sensor, Pet Friendly, Compatible with Home Assistant, SmartThings, Aeotec, Homey, Hubitat or Echo Devices with Built-in Zigbee Hub
  • ZIGBEE STANDARD COMPATIBLE MOTION SENSOR: A Zigbee Hub is required. Compatible with Zigbee hubs and Echo devices with built-in Zigbee hubs, including Echo (4th Gen), Echo Plus (1st & 2nd Gen), Echo Studio, Echo Show 8 (3rd Gen), Echo Show 10 (2nd & 3rd Gen), Echo Hub, Eero 6, Eero Pro 6, Home Assistant, SmartThings (2015/2018), Aeotec, Hubitat, Homey Bridge, Homey Pro, and Third Reality Hub Gen2 Plus.
  • CREATE ROUTINES: Using the Alexa app, create your own routines that are triggered when motion is detected. Customize Alexa messages like “Welcome Home” or “Motion Detected in Living Room” when motion is detected.
  • SMART LIGHT CONTROL: If you have a smart light or smart plug connected to the Alexa service, you can create a routine in the Alexa app that will enable it to automatically turn on when motion is detected (and off when no motion is detected for a period of time that you specify).

  • GREAT RANGE AND LONG BATTERY LIFE : Capable of detecting motion up to 20 feet (6 meters) away. 2 AAA batteries can last for 2 years in typical usage.

3. Confirm how compatibility is achieved

Look for the difference between native Matter, Matter-over-bridge, HomeKit integration, Zigbee integration, and vendor-specific scenes. “Works with Apple Home” or “works with Alexa” does not mean that every feature is native or exposed identically.

4. Check the data and controls you actually need

  • Motion or presence state
  • Illuminance or light level
  • Temperature and humidity
  • Zones or room-level tracking
  • Adjustable sensitivity
  • Configurable detection timeout
  • Battery status

5. Treat range and battery figures as ratings

Manufacturer ranges describe specified or ideal conditions. Battery claims depend on timeout, detection frequency, indicator settings, temperature, radio conditions, and the number of ecosystems connected. Do not compare a five-year claim directly with a two-year claim without comparing test conditions.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Placement that prevents common problems

  • Mount PIR sensors so people cross the field of view rather than approach the sensor head-on.
  • Avoid aiming directly at windows, heating vents, fans, moving curtains, and reflective surfaces.
  • Follow the manufacturer’s orientation guidance for mmWave sensors.
  • Test from the real seated, standing, and walking positions.
  • Keep doors, curtains, pets, and robot vacuums from repeatedly crossing the detection zone.
  • Do not assume a manufacturer’s maximum range will be reliable in every room.

Eve’s 9-m rating, for example, is specified at a 2-m mounting height. Aqara’s published figures likewise depend on conditions such as distance, temperature, and sensitivity.

Automation patterns that work better

Lighting

IF motion is detected
AND ambient light is below the chosen threshold
THEN turn on the light

WAIT for a room-appropriate period

IF no motion is detected
THEN turn off the light

Use a longer timeout or presence sensing in a bathroom or office. In a hallway, a shorter timeout may reduce unnecessary runtime.

Security

IF motion is detected
AND the home is in Away mode
AND any entry delay has expired
THEN send a notification or trigger the alarm

Exclude pets, cleaning routines, robot vacuums, HVAC movement, and known household schedules. A smart-home motion sensor is an automation input, not a replacement for a professionally monitored alarm system.

Multi-sensor rooms

In a difficult room, use PIR for immediate entry detection, mmWave for continued occupancy, illuminance to prevent unnecessary activation, and a door or contact sensor for context. This is often more reliable than asking one sensor to perform every job.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Troubleshooting

A Matter sensor will not pair

  1. Confirm that the phone is connected to the intended home network.
  2. Check that the Matter controller is online.
  3. Confirm that a compatible Thread border router is present for a Matter-over-Thread product.
  4. Check whether the sensor is already commissioned to another Matter fabric.
  5. Retry with a valid QR or setup code.
  6. Reset the sensor according to its manual.
  7. Check that the platform has access to the required Thread credentials.

For platform-specific details, consult Home Assistant’s Matter integration guidance.

A Zigbee sensor is unreliable

  • Update coordinator firmware.
  • Move the coordinator away from USB 3 devices and Wi-Fi equipment.
  • Use a USB extension cable where appropriate.
  • Review Zigbee channel selection.
  • Add mains-powered Zigbee devices to improve mesh routing.
  • Confirm that the selected integration supports the exact sensor model.

Home Assistant’s ZHA documentation covers these network factors.

The lights turn off while someone is still there

The likely cause is that a PIR sensor cannot detect small movement, or its timeout is too short. Increase the timeout, reposition the sensor so movement crosses its field of view, add a second PIR, or replace it with a presence sensor. A manual override or occupied helper can provide an additional safety net.

A presence sensor reports an empty room as occupied

Fans, curtains, vibrating furniture, reflections, broad detection zones, and placement close to a wall or large object can cause false positives. Reduce sensitivity, exclude troublesome zones, and reposition the sensor away from windows, fans, and moving curtains. Combining PIR and presence data can also improve the result.

The product works in its app but not on the chosen platform

This is often a capability-exposure issue rather than a failed sensor. Check whether the platform supports the device type, whether the connection is native or bridged, and whether it exposes light level, presence, zones, battery status, or advanced configuration. Vendor apps may remain necessary for setup or fine-tuning even when basic states are available elsewhere.

Final buying guide

  • Buy the Aqara P2 if you want a broadly compatible new Matter sensor with light sensing.
  • Buy Eve Motion if privacy, Apple Home, common AAA batteries, or sheltered outdoor placement is the priority.
  • Buy the Aqara P1 if you already own an Aqara hub and want a long-battery PIR sensor.
  • Buy the SONOFF SNZB-03P if you already run Zigbee and want economical multi-room coverage.
  • Buy the Aqara FP2, FP1E, or FP300 if the real requirement is detecting a person who may remain still.
