The best modern kettle depends on how you use it: choose a standard-spout model for faster everyday pouring and greater capacity, or a gooseneck kettle when you want careful control for pour-over coffee. Bon Appétit’s October 2026 guide recommends the OXO Variable Temperature Electric Kettle as its overall pick and the Fellow Stagg EKG Pro for pour-over; the right choice for you also depends on temperature settings, keep-warm time, and how much water you need.
Which kind of kettle fits the way you brew?
Start with the pour. A standard-spout kettle is generally the practical choice for quickly filling mugs or a teapot. A gooseneck’s narrow spout gives you finer control over the stream, which is useful for pour-over coffee. As Bon Appétit authors Emily Farris and Olivia Tarantino put it, “The thin, curvy gooseneck spouts are designed to control the flow of hot water when brewing coffee.” That control is about pouring, not a requirement for making good coffee.
For tea and everyday hot water
Most tea drinkers can use a standard-spout kettle. Variable temperature is helpful if you want to heat water below boiling, but no single setting is mandatory for every tea: brewing preferences and recommendations vary. If you usually just need boiling water, a simpler boil-only kettle may be enough.
For pour-over coffee
A gooseneck spout helps you direct water over the coffee bed more deliberately. If you make pour-over often, that control may be worth the smaller capacity and higher cost associated with the Fellow Stagg EKG Pro compared with the OXO pick. For other coffee methods, a gooseneck is not automatically necessary.

How the current tested picks compare
Bon Appétit says it tested and retested 27 electric kettles for its 2026 guide and evaluated four new kettles for its October update. These are that publication’s recommendations and test observations, not universal awards or tests conducted for this article. Its published product descriptions establish different strengths, but do not provide comparable findings for every practical factor, such as noise, exterior heat, descaling, or cleaning.
| Model and Bon Appétit designation | Temperature control | Spout and capacity | Keep-warm and other details |
|---|---|---|---|
| OXO Variable Temperature Electric Kettle — best overall for many households | 104–212°F, adjustable in single-degree increments; real-time temperature display; no presets. In Bon Appétit’s test, readings at the lower end ran around 1°F high. | Standard spout; 1.75 L. The source does not state a serving count. | Automatic 30-minute hold; two-year warranty listed by Bon Appétit. |
| Fellow Stagg EKG Pro — best gooseneck for pour-over | 104–212°F, adjustable in single-degree increments. | Precision gooseneck spout; 0.9 L. The source does not state a serving count. | Hold can be set to 15, 30, 45, or 60 minutes; includes a brew timer and altitude adjustment. Bon Appétit describes it as more expensive and lower-capacity than the OXO pick. |
| Fellow Clyde — simple boil-only option | No variable temperature settings. | Standard-spout type and serving count are not stated in the source; 1.5 L capacity. | Keep-warm duration and warranty are not stated in the source. |
| Aarke Stainless Steel Electric Kettle — design-led option | Five preset temperatures; no single-degree adjustment. | Spout type and serving count are not stated in the source; 1.2 L capacity. | No keep-warm function. Bon Appétit notes that the polished finish shows fingerprints. |
| Balmuda MoonKettle — appearance-first caution | Bon Appétit’s test found temperatures about 5–10°F from target. | Spout type, capacity, and serving count are not stated in the source. | The test found heating took about a minute longer than comparable tested kettles. Keep-warm duration and warranty are not stated in the source. |
Is temperature control worth it?
It is useful when you routinely want water below boiling or want to select a particular temperature without watching the kettle and stopping it manually. Both Bon Appétit’s OXO and Fellow Stagg EKG Pro picks offer single-degree adjustment from 104°F to 212°F. The OXO displays the current temperature and holds its target for 30 minutes; the Stagg EKG Pro offers selectable hold times up to 60 minutes.

- Electric gooseneck kettle, ideal for use with pour over coffee makers 0.8 liter / 27oz capacity
- Elegant, ergonomic design that gives you full control over the speed and consistency of the water flow for optimum pour over brewing
- Made of attractive, durable stainless steel
- Non-slip handle and knob made from natural, sustainable cork that protects your hands and is supremely comfortable to use
- Stylish base with easy-to-use power switch and automatic shut-off for peace of mind
More settings do not necessarily mean greater measured accuracy. Bon Appétit reports that its OXO test readings at the lower end were around a degree high, while its MoonKettle test found temperatures about 5–10°F from target. Those are observations from that publication’s testing, not a guarantee of how every unit will perform. If exact temperature is important to your routine, prioritize a model with adjustable settings and a clear display, and consider the reported test variation.

Capacity and serving needs
The listed capacities range from 0.9 L for the Stagg EKG Pro to 1.75 L for the OXO. Capacity affects how much water you can heat in one go; the source does not give comparable cup or serving counts, so use the capacity figures rather than assuming a specific number of mugs. A larger kettle may be more convenient for several people, while a smaller one may suit a compact routine.

Keep-warm behavior
Hold functions are not interchangeable. OXO’s automatic hold is 30 minutes, while Stagg EKG Pro lets you select 15, 30, 45, or 60 minutes. Aarke has no keep-warm function. The source does not establish hold details for Fellow Clyde or Balmuda MoonKettle.
Filling, cleaning, noise, and exterior heat
These can matter as much as settings in daily use, but the guide’s cited product details do not establish comparable results for ease of filling, cleaning, descaling, operating noise, or exterior temperature across these five models. Check the manufacturer’s care guidance and product specifications for the exact model before buying, especially if you need an easy-to-clean interior or plan to use the kettle around children.

Finish and design
The Aarke’s stainless-steel construction and polished appearance may suit a design-led kitchen, but its five presets are less granular than single-degree controls and its finish shows fingerprints, according to Bon Appétit. The guide says the Balmuda may appeal to buyers who prioritize appearance, while its test found slower heating and less accurate temperatures than the target. A premium look alone does not establish better speed or precision.
Price and warranty
Bon Appétit characterizes the Stagg EKG Pro as more expensive than the OXO, but the source does not provide stable current prices. Check the live listing for your region and confirm the seller and exact model. The guide lists a two-year warranty for the OXO; it does not state comparable warranty terms for the other picks.

How to choose
- Choose the pour style: pick a gooseneck if controlled flow for pour-over is a priority; otherwise, a standard spout is a sensible everyday option.
- Decide whether variable temperature matters: select adjustable control if you want to heat below boiling or repeat a chosen temperature. If you mainly want boiling water, consider a simpler model such as the boil-only Fellow Clyde.
- Match capacity and hold time to your routine: compare the listed liter capacity and the documented keep-warm behavior rather than relying on a generic serving estimate.
- Check the practical details: verify care instructions, warranty, current price, seller, and model identity for your market before purchasing. The available guide does not establish comparable cleaning, noise, or exterior-heat test results.
