Choose one that fits the mirror and the portion you want to keep clear, then check its voltage, wiring method, intended location and installation instructions. A vanity pad is not automatically safe for a shower.
How mirror defoggers work
Bathroom mirror fog is condensation: humid air meets a cooler mirror, and water droplets form on the glass. Those droplets scatter light and obscure the reflection. A rear-mounted heating pad warms the glass in front of it, helping reduce condensation in that zone. ClearMirror describes this operation for its 120-volt vanity defogger and explains the condensation process in its FAQ.
Hydrophilic coatings take a different approach: instead of preventing condensation, they help water spread into a thin film rather than distinct droplets. They do not require an electrical connection, but performance and durability depend on the coating and how the mirror is cleaned. A commercial comparison describes the categories but does not establish independent comparative performance results; see Mirrorwright’s comparison.
Which type suits your project?
| Option | How it works | Best fit and considerations |
|---|---|---|
| Retrofit electric defogger pad | An adhesive-backed pad on the mirror’s rear warms a defined section of glass. | For an existing mirror that can be accessed and safely wired. Match the pad to the desired clear area and confirm voltage, fit, controls and installation requirements. Product examples include ClearMirror’s 120-volt vanity pad and Livella’s 240-volt pad. |
| Integrated heated mirror or dedicated shower mirror | The heater is built into or supplied with the mirror. | Consider when replacing a mirror or planning a renovation. ClearMirror lists a separate low-voltage shower mirror with an attached heater; it is a different product from its 120-volt vanity pad. See ClearMirror’s shower mirror. |
| Hydrophilic coating | The coating helps condensed water spread into a thinner film. | An option when avoiding electrical wiring matters. Check the specific product’s care instructions and durability claims; independent comparative performance is not established by the cited commercial guide. |
Choose the pad for the clear area you need
A defogger pad does not necessarily clear the full mirror. The area directly in front of the pad is the heated viewing zone, as Livella notes on its product page. For a large mirror, decide where you need a clear reflection—such as the central area used at the sink—and select a pad sized to serve that space.

Check the mirror’s rear dimensions and make sure the pad will not interfere with lighting, wiring, mounting hardware or other components. MirrorDefogger4U advises that a pad should not extend past the mirror’s edge; Livella also says to choose a pad smaller than the mirror. Both are vendor guidance, so follow the selected model’s own instructions rather than treating one manufacturer’s sizing advice as universal. See MirrorDefogger4U’s FAQ and Livella’s product information.
Verify voltage, location and electrical requirements
Do not choose by pad dimensions alone. Before buying, confirm the exact product’s voltage, connection or control method, approved location and installation requirements. The cited ClearMirror vanity pad is a 120-volt product and is not for shower use; the company’s separate shower mirror is low voltage. Those product details should not be generalized to other models. Check the manufacturer’s current documentation for the item you plan to install.

Electrical requirements vary by product and jurisdiction. The manual for a specified 120-volt defogger says wiring must comply with the National Electrical Code and be performed by a licensed professional; it excludes that unit from shower, sauna and steam-room use and prohibits cutting, resizing or overlapping pads. Read the installation manual for its full instructions. WarmlyYours describes wiring its unit to a lighting circuit or dedicated switch and says its North American product requires GFCI protection on the main electrical line; see its wiring guidance. These are model-specific instructions, not a substitute for the selected product’s manual or local code.

Installation checks before you commit
- Confirm the pad fits entirely on the mirror’s rear surface and avoids mounting hardware, lighting and wiring.
- Verify the model’s voltage and how it is switched or connected; do not assume products share the same electrical requirements.
- Confirm the intended location. A standard vanity pad should not be used in a shower unless its own documentation explicitly approves that use.
- Do not cut, fold, pierce, resize or overlap a pad unless the exact manufacturer instructions expressly permit it. The cited 120-volt manual prohibits cutting, resizing and overlap, while Livella says not to cut, fold, pierce or alter its unit.
- Use a qualified electrician when required by the manufacturer or local electrical code, and confirm any required electrical protection for the specific installation.
