The best microwave for solar power is one whose actual electrical input fits your inverter and the energy your solar-and-battery system can supply. Do not choose by cooking watts alone: check the microwave’s input rating, then compare it with your inverter’s continuous AC capacity, voltage, applicable surge rating, and other loads running at the same time. No specific model can be called a universal winner without those system details.
Why cooking watts do not tell you the full power requirement
A microwave’s cooking-output rating describes the energy it delivers to food; it is not necessarily the electricity it draws from the outlet. Samlex America advises estimating a microwave’s AC input at about twice its cooking-output watts. Its inverter manual also gives a factor of two for microwaves when the stated rating is cooking power. These are manufacturer planning rules of thumb, not exact conversions for every oven. Use the input watts or amps on the specific microwave’s nameplate or in its manual for the final compatibility check. Samlex America microwave power guidance; Samlex inverter manual.
For example, a microwave advertised with a cooking-output rating of 1,000 watts should not be assumed to draw only 1,000 watts. Samlex’s rule of thumb would suggest planning around roughly 2,000 watts of AC input, but the appliance’s own rating is the better figure to use. Samlex America microwave power guidance.
How to check whether a microwave will work with your solar system
Ordinary household microwaves use AC power. Solar photovoltaic panels produce DC electricity, so a typical setup uses an inverter to convert that power to AC for household appliances. The inverter is only one part of the check: the battery and solar generation must also support the cooking session and any other loads. - Find the microwave’s electrical input rating. Check the rating label and the manufacturer’s manual for input watts or amps and the required voltage. Do not substitute the cooking-output wattage for the input rating. If the documentation lists current and voltage but not watts, use the manufacturer’s instructions or ask a qualified installer to interpret the requirement for your system.
- Check the inverter’s AC output. Compare the microwave’s input requirement with the inverter’s continuous output rating. Check the applicable surge rating as well, following both manufacturers’ guidance; a generic sizing rule does not guarantee compatibility.
- Account for other loads. Include appliances and equipment that may run at the same time. Their combined demand can exceed what the inverter can supply even if the microwave fits when used by itself.
- Check the system’s available energy. Confirm that the battery and solar generation can supply the intended cooking session alongside other uses. The right amount depends on your equipment and operating conditions; the available guidance does not establish a reader-specific runtime or system size.
What to compare when choosing an oven
| Comparison | What to look for |
|---|---|
| Electrical input | Manufacturer-listed input watts or amps and required voltage on the label or in the manual. This is the key figure for checking electrical compatibility. |
| Cooking performance and capacity | Cooking-output rating and interior capacity suited to the food and portions you prepare. Output watts describe cooking performance, not the complete electrical input requirement. |
| Inverter compatibility | Continuous AC output, applicable surge capacity, voltage match, and demand from simultaneous loads. Verify against the microwave and inverter documentation. |
| Available energy | Whether the battery and PV system can support cooking for the time you expect while serving other loads. A model rating alone cannot determine runtime. |
| Standby consumption | Power used by controls and displays while the microwave is not cooking. Published DOE figures below are historical, not a current ranking of models. |
Why standby draw may matter
A microwave can use electricity while idle if its controls or display remain powered. In a 2013 account, the U.S. Department of Energy said a typical microwave was used to heat food for about 70 hours per year, while its controls and display used electricity during the remaining 8,690 hours. The same account reported standby-power reductions of 75% for countertop models and 51% for over-the-range models with convection features under the standards it described. These are historical DOE figures, not measurements of current products or a basis for ranking today’s models. U.S. Department of Energy, 2013.

DOE’s microwave energy-conservation standards page lists an amended standard effective August 21, 2023, with a compliance date of June 22, 2026. The page also lists a proposed rescission published May 16, 2025. Because both actions appear on the page, check the latest DOE docket and Federal Register status before relying on a present-tense claim about which requirements are binding.
