How to choose by fit, cleanup, and splatter control
- Measure the microwave. Check width, depth, and available height, plus the turntable diameter and whether the assembled cooker can rotate without touching the walls. Only Nordic Ware’s compact rack dimensions are specified above; confirm dimensions for the other models with their current product information.
- Match capacity to strip layout. A stated slice count is useful only if strips fit without touching or overlapping. Bacon widths vary, so leave room for the cooker’s actual arrangement rather than buying solely by its maximum number.
- Consider where the grease goes. A ridged flat rack drains into the area beneath it; Presto and Makin Bacon direct drippings to a lower tray or dish. Grease collection describes the cooker’s layout, not a demonstrated health benefit.
- Decide how you want to manage splatter. Presto and Makin Bacon instruct users to cover the bacon with a paper towel. A covered-tray design is another approach, but confirm the exact model’s current instructions, including how to handle a hot lid and pan.
- Check cleaning instructions before buying. Nordic Ware recommends hand washing its Compact Bacon Rack and does not recommend dishwasher use. Do not assume another plastic cooker is dishwasher-safe; follow that product’s own care guidance.
Cook bacon safely and adjust for your microwave
- Read the instructions for your exact cooker and arrange bacon in the specified way, without overlap. For Presto and Makin Bacon, place a paper towel over the strips as directed to reduce spattering.
- Use the manufacturer’s cooking time only as a starting point. Nordic Ware advises one minute per piece followed by 30-second intervals; Presto gives 40–90 seconds per slice depending on the microwave and bacon; Makin Bacon advises one-half to one minute per strip. These are product-specific directions, not interchangeable guarantees.
- Check the bacon during cooking, especially the first time you use a cooker or microwave combination. Food Network notes microwave bacon may be less crispy than bacon cooked on the stovetop or in the oven and advises checking often to avoid overcooking: Food Network’s microwave bacon guide.
- Stay near the microwave while cooking. Presto’s instruction manual says, “Do not leave unit unattended while in use.” Use caution when handling the cooker and hot drippings.
- Handle the cooker carefully after cooking; the rack, tray, grease, and any lid can be hot. Follow the model’s instructions for removing bacon and disposing of drippings.
