Metal lets more coffee oils through than paper, which can make coffee taste fuller-bodied, but fine particles may also be more noticeable. For a standalone pour-over, consider Ovalware or IKEA ÖVERST; for an AeroPress, choose the filter sized for your model.
How to choose a metal coffee filter
- Start with your brewer. A standalone filter must suit the shape and support of your cup, carafe, or dripper. An AeroPress filter is model-specific and does not replace a general pour-over filter.
- Decide how much body you want. Metal passes oils that paper holds back, tending toward a richer, fuller cup. The trade-off is that fine grounds or sediment can be more apparent.
- Match the grind to the filter. Recommendations differ by product and brewing method; there is no single grind setting for every metal filter.
- Check the care instructions. Rinse after use and follow the product’s specific cleaning and dishwasher directions.

Metal coffee filters compared
| Filter | Best suited to | Fit and construction | Cup and grind guidance | Care |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Ovalware Stainless Steel Coffee Filters | A standalone pour-over or carafe setup | Ovalware describes 18/8 304 stainless steel, dual-layer mesh with a laser-cut exterior, and a silicone rim. It says the filter fits most branded carafes and drippers. Its page lists a 40 μm inner-filter hole diameter. | Ovalware recommends medium-fine grounds. Its FAQ says oils pass through for fuller body and warns that very fine grounds can seep through and settle as sediment. | Rinse after use. For a deeper clean, Ovalware suggests soaking in warm water and white vinegar, then using a soft brush. It says the filter is top-rack dishwasher-safe. Ovalware product details. |
| IKEA ÖVERST | A standalone filter placed on a cup or carafe | IKEA describes stainless steel with small holes. It says the filter can sit on a glass, mug, cup, vacuum flask, or carafe. The US listing identifies model 903.602.34. | IKEA says the holes let oils pass through, giving coffee a richer character. | IKEA says it is dishwasher-safe, separates into three parts for cleaning, and should be washed before first use. IKEA product details. |
| AeroPress Stainless Steel Reusable Filter | Owners of a compatible AeroPress | AeroPress documents a food-safe 316 stainless-steel filter. Standard size fits AeroPress Original, Clear, Go, Premium, and Go Plus; it does not fit XL. The XL filter is for AeroPress XL. | AeroPress says metal allows oils through for a somewhat fuller-bodied cup, while paper keeps oils out for a smoother, grit-free profile. The metal filter is more porous and flows faster; AeroPress support suggests experienced users try a slightly finer grind. | Dishwasher-safe on the top rack only. AeroPress filter guidance. |
What changes when you brew with metal instead of paper?
AeroPress’s official help documentation describes its stainless-steel filter as allowing oils through for a somewhat fuller-bodied cup, while its paper micro-filters keep those oils out for a smoother, grit-free profile. IKEA likewise says the small holes in ÖVERST let oils through and give coffee a richer character. These are manufacturer descriptions of the trade-off, not a guarantee of a particular taste for every coffee or recipe.
Metal filtration may leave fine particles in the cup, especially if grounds are very fine. Ovalware specifically warns that very fine grounds can pass through and settle; it suggests letting the cup settle or choosing a slightly coarser setting if sediment is unwanted. Paper is the better starting choice if a smoother, grit-free cup matters more to you than the fuller body associated with oils passing through.

Which grind should you use?
Follow the guidance for the filter you own, then adjust to taste. Ovalware recommends medium-fine grounds for its standalone filters, while its FAQ gives medium-grind guidance and notes the risk of sediment from very fine grounds. AeroPress says its metal filter’s faster flow may lead experienced users to try a slightly finer grind. These recommendations are product- and method-specific, not interchangeable rules.

Rinse the filter after brewing so grounds and oils do not remain in the mesh.
