If you want a door lock with a push-button code and no batteries, dormakaba’s Simplex 1000 is a named mechanical option worth evaluating. It is not a universal deadbolt replacement: its fit, locking function, and optional key override depend on the door and configuration. The manufacturer specifies one access code and free egress for this model, but its published product information does not establish that it is the best-performing lock in an independent security test.
What counts as a mechanical pushbutton door lock?
A mechanical keyless lock opens from an exterior pushbutton combination without relying on electronic code entry or batteries. dormakaba describes its Simplex family that way. The trade-off is credential management: the Simplex 1000 has one access code, rather than separately managed codes for each person.
A non-connected electronic keypad is different. It may avoid network connectivity but still depend on batteries and electronics, so it should not be labeled mechanical.
How the Simplex 1000 fits the home-lock question
The Simplex 1000 is a cylindrical latch lock intended for exterior combination access and free egress, according to dormakaba’s product specifications. Its keypad can be programmed without removing the lock, and the handing is reversible. These are manufacturer specifications, not results from an independent installation or security test.

It is a specialist option, not a drop-in substitute for every residential deadbolt. Confirm door preparation and intended operation before ordering.
Check fit and function before choosing a model
- Backset: dormakaba lists 2⅜ inches (60 mm) or 2¾ inches (70 mm) for the Simplex 1000.
- Door thickness: the listed range is 1⅜ to 2¼ inches (35 to 57 mm).
- Preparation and material: the product page describes installation on wood or metal doors with ASA 161 preparation and additional through-bore holes.
- Stile width: dormakaba recommends a minimum 5-inch (127 mm) stile.
- Locking and egress: verify the exact model and configuration for how occupants exit, whether the door relocks automatically, and whether a deadbolt is manual or automatic. Features vary across the Simplex range.
- Key override: optional interchangeable or removable core configurations are listed for the 1000; the core is not included. Verify the supplied configuration and required core compatibility.
These dimensions and preparation details come from dormakaba’s Simplex 1000 page. If the door is part of a rated assembly or subject to local egress rules, check the lock documentation and requirements for that specific installation rather than relying on a family-level description.

How the Simplex models differ
The manufacturer lists other mechanical products in the Simplex family, but their functions are not interchangeable by default. Compare the operation with the door and use case rather than choosing by family name alone.

When an electronic keypad may suit you better
If multiple independently managed codes and compatibility with many existing single-cylinder deadbolts matter more than avoiding batteries, Yale Code is an electronic alternative, not a mechanical lock. Yale says it is non-connected, uses four AA batteries, supports up to 20 codes, and works with most single-cylinder deadbolts. See Yale’s product page for its current specifications. What the published security claims do—and do not—show
dormakaba says the Simplex product family meets or exceeds ANSI/BHMA Grade 1 or Grade 2 requirements and has a UL fire rating. That is a family-level statement; it does not identify the grade or fire rating for every model and configuration. The Simplex 1000 page separately lists a three-year warranty and a three-hour UL/ULC fire rating for “A” labeled doors. Confirm the documentation for the exact lock and door assembly before applying those claims to a particular installation.
Manufacturer specifications can establish stated features and fit dimensions, but the reviewed sources do not provide independent comparative testing of burglary resistance, durability, or reliability. They therefore do not support ranking one model as the most secure or most reliable.
