What to expect from a mechanical kitchen scale
A mechanical or analog kitchen scale displays weight on a dial rather than an electronic screen. The cited models do not need batteries, and their classic styling can suit a counter where the scale stays visible. Their main trade-off is the spacing between dial markings: the models below are marked in 25 g or 50 g increments, so they are not gram-level scales.
Graduation size is not the same as proven accuracy. A finer interval tells you how the dial is marked; it does not establish that the scale measures correctly. No common independent accuracy test for these models is established here, so the specifications below should be read as manufacturer claims, not test results.

How to choose a dial scale
- Check the dial interval first. A 25 g interval gives more marked steps than a 50 g interval, but neither is a gram-level measurement. Do not treat a smaller interval as proof of accuracy.
- Match the weighing surface to your ingredients. A platform may suit your own mixing bowl; a supplied bowl is ready for loose ingredients and can be more convenient when you do not want to use another vessel.
- Check capacity and bowl size. All three listings specify a 5 kg maximum, but the Taylor bowls differ: 5 cups for the 3719 and 7 cups for the 3701KL.
- Look for useful functions and storage. Salter lists add-and-weigh on the classic Timeless; Taylor lists nesting storage for the 3719. Check that the feature belongs to the exact variant you plan to purchase.
- Read care instructions for the complete scale. On both Taylor models, dishwasher safety applies to the bowl, not the scale. Salter’s black-and-gold listing says it is not dishwasher safe, so verify care directions by variant.
When a mechanical scale is not the right tool
If you regularly weigh yeast, spices or small coffee doses, these cited analog scales may not provide useful resolution: their dial marks are 25 g or 50 g apart. Consider a digital scale whose specifications state finer increments. A finer display interval still does not, by itself, prove accuracy; compare the measurement needs of your recipes and the scale’s stated specifications.
