The right grinder depends on the exact bone, the amount you need to process, and whether you are preparing food at home or running a production line. For home use, LEM says its #12, #22, and #32 Big Bite grinders can grind raw chicken bone, while the STX Turboforce II 4000 series manual describes grinding meat and soft bones with meat for homemade pet food. Neither claim establishes that a grinder can handle every bone or bone-in recipe. Commercial processors need a different class of equipment, such as Scansteel’s industrial SuperGrind machines.
Start with the bone, batch size, and processing scale
Before choosing a grinder, identify the animal and bone type in the recipe, how much material you expect to process, and whether the machine will be used in a household or a commercial operation. “Bone-capable” is not a universal rating: manufacturers set limits for particular models and ingredients, and their instructions are not independent performance tests.
- Match the machine to the specific bone. A claim about raw chicken bone does not establish suitability for beef, pork, or other bones.
- Match the machine to the workload. Household grinders and industrial pet-food equipment are not interchangeable options.
- Read the instructions for the exact model. Preparation, portion size, and grind-plate directions vary by manufacturer.
- Account for wear and upkeep. Bone grinding can increase wear on consumable parts.
Household grinders: what the manufacturers say

When the LEM Big Bite #12 fits
The LEM #12 Big Bite is a model-specific option for someone whose intended use fits LEM’s stated limit: raw chicken bone. LEM’s instructions describe a raw chicken leg or thigh fed one at a time, with cold, unfrozen meat and the specified plate sequence. Check the exact model configuration and its current instructions before buying or operating it. The maker’s chicken-bone guidance is not a recommendation for beef, pork, or every bone-in ingredient.
When the STX Turboforce II 4000 series fits
The STX manual describes its Turboforce II 4000 series for meat and soft bones with meat in homemade pet food, and names chicken, squirrel, quail, and rabbit bones in its double-grind preparation directions. Its direction to cut the ingredients into smaller portions is part of that model’s preparation guidance. Use the manual for the exact unit rather than transferring these instructions to another grinder.

Commercial bone grinders are a separate category
Scansteel describes its SuperGrind equipment for pet-food and rendering operations, not as household appliances. Its product pages list a wider range of intended materials than the household guidance above. These are manufacturer-stated applications and specifications; they do not provide an independent comparison of throughput, grinding results, or service life.

The SG 550/310’s 160–250 kW figure is a manufacturer specification for industrial equipment, not a household-grinder comparison or a measure of finished-food quality. A processor evaluating either machine should confirm application, installation, feed handling, and operating requirements directly with the manufacturer.

Wear, handling, and the limits of a grinder
Plan for consumable-part wear
LEM cautions that grinding bone may shorten the life of its bushing, knives, and plates. That is a practical ownership consideration for its models: check part availability and replacement instructions, and factor consumables into the decision. The available manufacturer statements do not establish a service-life estimate or a wear rate that can be compared across brands.
Grinding does not make raw food safe or nutritionally complete
Grinding changes particle size; it does not establish that raw ingredients are free of pathogens or that a recipe meets a dog’s nutritional needs. FDA’s 2004 CVM GFI #122 states: “The scientific literature indicates that feeding raw meat products carries a risk to human and animal health that is significant given the microbiological results from studies of ingredients that could compose such products and the limited sampling of commercial raw pet foods themselves.” The guidance addresses manufacturing and labeling risks, including potential exposure of animals and people and nutritional deficiency. Its publication date is 2004; FDA’s guidance remains available, but it should not be mistaken for a product-specific grinder test.

A separate, current example illustrates why a bone product’s processing claims should be evaluated on their own evidence. In a warning letter dated April 30, 2026, FDA said its review found that Best Buy Bones, Inc.’s validation study did not provide sufficient evidence that the company’s beef-bone thermal treatment could significantly reduce or prevent pathogens. That finding concerns the company’s study and treatment; it is not evidence about all bone products or about grinder performance.

- Write down the exact ingredient. Name the species and bone type, and whether the bone is raw or otherwise prepared.
- Choose household or production-scale equipment. The LEM and STX options described here are household-use paths; Scansteel’s cited models are industrial machines.
- Verify the exact model’s instructions. Confirm the maker explicitly covers the material and preparation you intend to use, then follow its portioning and plate directions.
- Consider consumables and maintenance. Check what parts may wear and how replacements are handled for the model you are considering.
- Evaluate the food plan separately. Grinder suitability does not answer questions about pathogen control, safe handling, or nutritional adequacy.
The cited product information supports matching equipment to specific materials and scales, but does not establish a head-to-head household performance ranking, independent throughput comparison, or comparative service-life estimate. Choose on the basis of your ingredient and the exact maker’s instructions, rather than assuming that a more powerful or more expensive machine is automatically appropriate.
