A reamer is simple and compact; a handheld squeezer contains juice in a small tool; and a countertop press is better suited to repeated batches when it has a stable place to live. No single style is best for every kitchen.
Three kinds of manual lemon juicers
Citrus reamers
A reamer’s ridged cone tears into a cut lemon as you twist it, letting juice drain into a cup or bowl. In a hands-on comparison published by Epicurious on September 7, 2022, reamers extracted juice well, but took more time and could be messier than contained presses.
A basic handheld reamer is compact, but you may need a separate container and a strainer if you want pulp-free juice. A reamer with an integrated cup and strainer combines juicing, catching seeds and pulp, measuring, and pouring. Epicurious’s OXO Good Grips 2-in-1 example has small and large reamers and a marked 1.5-cup (350-milliliter) cup; the review says its parts detach for hand or dishwasher cleaning. That capacity and care description refer to the model as reviewed in 2022, so check the current product listing.
Handheld squeezers
A hinged squeezer compresses a lemon half and keeps juice more contained than an open reamer. It is a practical option for occasional use and usually stores in a drawer, but it takes hand strength and may leave juice in the fruit. Check the bowl size against the lemons you buy and consider whether the handles feel comfortable to grip.

Epicurious named the KitchenAid Citrus Squeezer its preferred handheld model in its September 2022 comparison. That is a dated test result, not a current ranking. For a different mechanism, Joseph Joseph describes its JuiceMax as a squeeze-and-twist tool: squeeze the handles, then twist the fruit against the reamer. The manufacturer says it is intended for lemons and smaller citrus, catches pips and pulp, and is dishwasher safe. Countertop lever presses
A lever press uses a larger mechanism and needs a stable surface. It can suit repeated juicing, but it takes up more space and can be awkward to store; some countertop models may also need to be secured to stay stable. Choose one only if its footprint and setup make sense for your kitchen or bar.

Tribest describes the Cancan MJP-100 as a manual press for lemons and other citrus, with a 3.9-inch stainless-steel bowl and strainer, removable locking parts, and a listed weight of 12.1 pounds. Tribest also states that the press applies 200 pounds of squeezing pressure and is intended for household and commercial use. Those figures and claims come from the manufacturer’s product page, not an independent test or certification; check the Tribest Cancan product page for current specifications.

How to choose for your kitchen
- For a few lemons and minimal storage space: Choose a basic reamer or handheld squeezer. Pick a reamer if you prefer twisting and can use a separate bowl; pick a squeezer if containing juice matters more.
- For less transferring and straining: Look for a reamer with an integrated cup and strainer, or a squeezer designed to catch pulp and seeds. Confirm what the particular model actually includes.
- For frequent batches: Consider a countertop lever press only if you have a stable surface and room to store or leave it out.
- If grip or hand strength is a concern: Try the grip and mechanism before buying when possible. Reamers require twisting force; hinged squeezers require pressure through the handles. A larger press may change the motion but still needs a stable setup.
- If you care about yield: Do not rely on a guaranteed amount per lemon or a small difference between models. Epicurious said its testers measured juice but did not closely distinguish very small yield differences because individual lemons vary.
- If you plan to use other citrus: Check the tool’s size and stated fruit range. A broader range is useful only if you will actually juice those fruits.
What the comparisons can—and cannot—tell you
The comparative review cited here tested more than a dozen juicers, but it was published in September 2022. Its product choices and rankings describe that testing at that time; they should not be read as a fresh 2026 product ranking. Joseph Joseph’s and Tribest’s pages provide current manufacturer descriptions as accessed October 8, 2026, but product pages are not independent tests. Models, availability, and specifications can change, so verify the exact item before buying.
