Treat it as a removable draft barrier, not a fire screen, fireplace door, or promise of lower energy bills.
Will a magnetic fireplace cover work for you?
It may suit a fireplace that is not in use and has an exposed, magnetic iron or steel surface for the cover to attach to. Before choosing one, check the surface, measure the area the cover must overlap, and account for anything that could keep it from lying flat.
- Confirm magnetic hold: Test the intended attachment area with a household magnet. A magnetic cover will not attach directly to a nonmagnetic surface unless its maker provides a separate mounting method suitable for that product and surface.
- Check the fit: Compare the cover’s width and height with the area it is designed to cover, including the overlap. Handles, trim, tiles, and protrusions can interfere with a close fit.
- Consider the look: Fabric covers offer a softer appearance; a rigid panel may suit a buyer seeking a more finished, tailored look. Product pages describe available materials and finishes, but do not establish independent design or durability comparisons.
- Plan for removal: A soft draft cover must come off before the fireplace is lit or operated.
Which type of cover fits your fireplace?
| Option | Best fit | Check before buying | Limitation |
|---|---|---|---|
| Fabric magnetic draft cover | A cool, unused fireplace with an exposed magnetic surround | Magnet hold, dimensions, overlap, obstructions, and any alternative mounting method | Must be removed before operation; it is not a fire screen or safety device. |
| Custom aluminum magnetic cover | A compatible, flat steel insert where a rigid panel is preferred | Exposed steel around the opening, dimensions, surface modifications, and protrusions | WattWorks describes its basic flat-frame design for pre-fabricated steel inserts and excludes surfaces modified with glass doors or tiles. |
| Custom magnetic fireplace doors | A buyer seeking an appearance upgrade or model-appropriate doors | Fireplace brand and model, fit, airflow requirements, and dealer guidance | These are a different product from a removable draft cover. Zero-clearance units must retain required airflow. |
Fabric covers
Fabric models are removable barriers for an unused fireplace. TURBRO’s product page lists 39 × 32-inch and 45 × 34-inch sizes, Oxford cloth, insulation cotton, and 10 sets of hook-and-loop fasteners; the page showed the product as sold out when accessed, so those specifications do not confirm current availability. See TURBRO’s product information.
CoverWith describes a 39 × 32-inch cover with a 600D Oxford-cloth exterior and cotton padding. Its page listed the product at $39 when accessed; price and stock can change. The maker recommends checking magnetic hold with a household magnet and measuring the area to be overlapped. See CoverWith’s fit and safety guidance.

Custom aluminum panels
WattWorks describes a powder-coated aluminum cover made for a flat, unmodified pre-fabricated steel insert, with custom finish options. Its page says the former two-inch-deep frame option is no longer available and that the company has no current plan to produce it again. Verify current configurations and compatibility before ordering. See WattWorks’ product information.
Magnetic fireplace doors
Do not treat fireplace doors as interchangeable with a fabric draft cover. Stoll Industries says zero-clearance fireplaces need air exchange between the inner firebox and outer cabinet to keep surrounding surfaces cool; its doors are designed to meet manufacturer ventilation requirements. Confirm the exact fireplace make and model with its manufacturer or a qualified dealer before choosing doors. Read Stoll’s zero-clearance fireplace guidance.

Will a magnetic cover work on a brick or stone fireplace?
Not by magnetism alone: brick and stone are not magnetic attachment surfaces. CoverWith also says its cover will not attach magnetically to brick, stone, aluminum, or other nonmagnetic materials. Some products may offer adhesive or hook-and-loop mounting, but check that the specific product supports the method and that it is suitable for the surface. Do not assume an alternative mounting method is included.
How do I measure for a magnetic fireplace cover?
- Identify the intended attachment and overlap area. Measure the surface the cover is designed to span, rather than relying only on the firebox opening dimensions.
- Measure width and height. Compare both measurements with the product’s listed dimensions and confirm the maker’s required overlap.
- Check for interference. Note handles, trim, tile, raised edges, and other protrusions that could prevent a flat fit or reliable attachment.
- Confirm the material. Test the perimeter with a household magnet. For a rigid custom panel, verify the specific requirements for exposed steel and surface condition.
- Ask the maker when the fit is uncertain. Provide the measurements and describe the surround and any modifications before ordering.
Can I leave a magnetic fireplace cover on while the fireplace is running?
No. Remove a soft draft cover before lighting or operating the fireplace, and apply it only when the fireplace is completely cool. CoverWith says its product is not a fire blanket, fire screen, or safety device. WattWorks warns that putting its cover on a burning fire could cause dangerous gas buildup and melt its plastic magnetic trim. Follow the fireplace manual; do not cover an operating or hot fireplace.

For a vented fireplace, the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency advises: “Open the fireplace damper before lighting the fire and keep it open until the ashes are cool.” The EPA also recommends a screen or glass enclosure to help prevent sparks or embers from igniting flammable materials. Those operating and spark-control measures do not make a draft cover a safety barrier. Read the EPA’s fireplace guidance.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone. Can a magnetic cover improve heating efficiency?
A cover may help limit drafts through an unused fireplace, but the reviewed product information does not establish a typical energy-bill reduction, percentage saving, temperature increase, or payback period. Manufacturer statements that a cover helps reduce drafts are not independent product-performance tests.

The U.S. Department of Energy’s archived 2006 guidance says a roaring fire can exhaust as much as 24,000 cubic feet of air per hour. That historical figure describes conventional fireplace air exhaust—not savings achieved by a magnetic cover. DOE Building America guidance identifies fireplaces as potential air-leakage paths and lists tight-fitting barriers over unused openings as one air-sealing approach. The EPA cautions that a conventional wood-burning fireplace is not an efficient way to heat a home. Together, these sources explain why drafts matter without proving a particular cover’s performance. Read DOE’s archived fireplace guidance and DOE Building America guidance; see also the EPA’s wood-burning guidance.
