For a room that often falls below 65°F, ENERGY STAR advises considering a model specified for lower temperatures: frost on the coils can reduce moisture removal. Manufacturer-listed examples include models rated down to 38°F or 41°F, but those limits do not tell you how much water a unit removes at the coldest temperature. Choose by temperature rating first, then compare capacity, efficiency, drainage and controls.
What makes a dehumidifier suitable for a cold basement?
Most portable compressor dehumidifiers draw moisture onto cold condensing coils. When room air is cool, frost can form on those coils and interfere with moisture removal. ENERGY STAR cautions that below 65°F, frost may cause a unit’s compressor to cycle repeatedly without removing moisture. The 65°F figure is a practical buying warning, not a universal cutoff for every design. Check the exact product’s manual and specifications rather than assuming a standard model will work well in an unheated room. ENERGY STAR’s dehumidifier buying guidance
A low-temperature operating limit tells you the lowest temperature at which the manufacturer says the unit can operate; it does not establish its water-removal rate at that temperature. No comparable independent cold-room test results are available here, so the examples below are manufacturer specifications, not a tested ranking.
Manufacturer-listed low-temperature models
| Model or range | Manufacturer-stated low-temperature limit | Other documented features | What to verify |
|---|---|---|---|
| Hisense DH5023KP | 38°F | Marketed as an ENERGY STAR 50-pint, 3-speed unit; the product page describes use in cool basements and unheated garages. | Confirm current availability and the applicable local specification. The 38°F limit does not state water removal at that temperature. Hisense product page |
| Friedrich consumer dehumidifier line | 41°F | The manufacturer describes continuous drainage, a removable bucket, a built-in pump and adjustable humidity control. | Confirm the exact model, capacity, current ENERGY STAR listing and warranty for the variant you are considering. Friedrich product page |
| Frigidaire FHDD5034W1 | 41°F | Manufacturer-listed ENERGY STAR certification and Wi-Fi controls; its PureAir Advanced Filter is sold separately. | Check the current product specifications and filter cost and availability. Frigidaire product page |
| Danby DDR070BBCBDB | 41°F | Manufacturer lists an automatic de-icer, direct drainage, a washable filter and capacity of up to 70 pints per 24 hours. | Check the capacity rating conditions and drainage instructions; its area suitability is Danby’s claim, not an independently validated coverage figure. How to choose a unit for your space
1. Measure the coldest typical temperature
Use a thermometer to check the basement, garage or other room during its coldest normal periods, not just in the afternoon. Choose a unit whose manual explicitly allows operation at or below that temperature. If the room regularly falls below 65°F, treat low-temperature capability as a primary filter.
2. Size for both area and dampness
Capacity is the amount of water collected in 24 hours under specified test conditions. ENERGY STAR provides broad sizing ranges and recommends choosing a unit that is not undersized, but a pint-per-day label does not guarantee the same output in a cold room. Compare capacity only when the rating conditions are available, and follow the manufacturer’s sizing advice for your room and moisture level. ENERGY STAR dehumidifier specification document

3. Compare efficiency without confusing it with cold-room output
Integrated energy factor (IEF), expressed in liters of water removed per kilowatt-hour, helps compare energy efficiency; a higher IEF generally indicates greater efficiency. ENERGY STAR says a certified dehumidifier uses 20% less energy than a similarly sized conventional unit. That is the program’s general comparison claim, not a guarantee for a particular model or for operation in a cold room. Check current certification and the unit’s rating information. 4. Plan how condensate will drain
A bucket requires regular emptying. A gravity-drain hose needs a suitable drain below the outlet and a compatible fitting. A pump can move water where gravity drainage is not possible, but check the appliance manual for pump availability, hose compatibility and lift limits. Do not assume a generic hose or pump will fit.
5. Check defrost, controls and maintenance
Look for documented defrost or anti-frost provisions and a humidistat that lets you set a target. Confirm how the unit behaves after a power interruption if automatic restart matters in your space. Check filter cleaning or replacement instructions and leave adequate clearance around the appliance as its manual directs.

Set a humidity target and address the source of moisture
ENERGY STAR describes 30%–50% relative humidity as a general building range, and 30%–40% during heating season in colder climates to limit window condensation. Treat these figures as general guidance, not a guarantee against mold or a universal health target. Use the appliance’s humidistat or a separate hygrometer to monitor conditions, and follow local building guidance where relevant. ENERGY STAR humidity guidance
A dehumidifier removes moisture from indoor air; it does not repair a leak or stop water entering through a foundation. ENERGY STAR recommends managing moisture sources by maintaining drainage around the foundation, keeping gutters and downspouts clear, venting clothes dryers outdoors and using kitchen and bathroom exhaust fans. Persistent seepage or a leak needs to be addressed at its source.

Why does a dehumidifier keep icing up?
Repeated coil icing can mean the room is too cold for the appliance’s specified operating range or that its defrost controls are not clearing frost as intended. Follow the manual’s troubleshooting steps. If the room is below the unit’s rated minimum, stop using it until conditions are within range; if icing continues within the stated range, consult the manufacturer. Do not assume a generic accessory will solve the problem.
