Automatic-dishwasher detergent is designed to produce very little foam; excess suds can interfere with cleaning and may overflow. The available product information does not establish one objectively best detergent, but Earth Breeze explicitly describes its dishwasher sheets as low-sudsing.
What makes a dishwasher detergent low-sudsing?
Automatic dishwashers rely on forceful water movement, not a blanket of foam. The American Cleaning Institute explains that these detergents must be “very low to nonsudsing”; excess suds can cushion the water’s mechanical cleaning action and cause overflow. Detergent also helps soften water, keep soil suspended and rinse dishes clean. ACI’s dishwasher guidance explains why automatic-machine formulas differ from hand dishwashing products.
Few visible bubbles are normal and do not mean the detergent is failing. Earth Breeze specifically says not to add extra sheets just because bubbles are absent.
Which products have an explicit low-suds claim?
Earth Breeze Dishwasher Detergent Sheets
Earth Breeze describes its sheets as low-sudsing and directs users to use half a sheet per load. Both are manufacturer statements, not results from an independent comparison. Its FAQ says the product ships within the United States only. Check the current product directions and availability before buying: Earth Breeze dishwasher sheets FAQ.

Other automatic-dishwasher detergents
Some detergents may suit particular preferences without having an explicit low-suds claim on the cited product page. Seventh Generation describes its Free & Clear gel as an automatic-dishwasher detergent, lists protease and amylase, and says it is fragrance-free. Its page recommends its rinse aid for very hard water, but does not explicitly call the gel low-sudsing: Seventh Generation product information.
Cascade says its Free & Clear ActionPacs have no added perfume, dyes, chlorine bleach or phosphates and claims they clean dried-on food. Its page does not establish a low-suds claim or provide independent comparative results: Cascade product information.

These examples are not a cleaning-performance ranking. Compare the package’s automatic-dishwasher compatibility, any explicit low-suds wording, prescribed dose and format, and whether its fragrance or ingredient profile fits your preferences. The cited sources do not provide an independent head-to-head test naming a best detergent.
How much detergent should you use?
Use the amount specified by both the detergent label and your dishwasher manual, including the directions for the selected cycle. The right amount can depend on water hardness. Too little detergent can leave dishes poorly cleaned or cause soil redeposition, spotting or filming; adding more than directed is not a sound fix for a lack of bubbles. The American Cleaning Institute and GE dishwasher guidance advise using detergent intended for automatic dishwashers and following dispenser directions.

For Samsung appliances, Samsung’s US support guidance says to use the detergent maker’s recommended amount and notes that pods and tablets need hot water to dissolve fully. It gives 120°F as the minimum water-supply temperature in that guidance. This is Samsung-specific advice, not a universal setting; check your appliance manual and detergent instructions: Samsung dishwasher detergent guidance.
Can you use dish soap or another household product?
No. Do not substitute hand dishwashing liquid, laundry detergent, baking soda, borax or vinegar for automatic-dishwasher detergent. Hand dish soap can create the very suds automatic machines are designed to avoid, with a risk of poor cleaning or overflow. The ACI and GE guidance both recommend products specifically designed for automatic dishwashers.

Keep detergent dry and in its original packaging as directed by its manufacturer; moisture can affect storage and use. GE also advises using only powders, liquids, tablets or pods made for automatic dishwashers.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone.Do you need rinse aid for hard-water spots?
Rinse aid is separate from detergent and does not reduce sudsing or replace detergent. It helps water sheet off dishes, which can improve drying and reduce spotting, especially in hard water. GE and Samsung describe drying or spotting benefits, and Seventh Generation recommends its rinse aid for very hard water. Follow the rinse-aid and dishwasher instructions for filling and settings: GE guidance, Samsung guidance and Seventh Generation product information.

What to check before you buy
- Confirm the product is labeled for automatic dishwashers.
- Look for an explicit low-suds or low-sudsing statement if that is your priority; do not infer it from a product’s format or “free and clear” wording.
- Check the dose and format instructions against your dishwasher’s dispenser and cycle directions.
- Consider water hardness and whether spotting or drying makes rinse aid useful.
- Review fragrance and ingredient information if those affect your choice.
