The most efficient dehumidifier is one that removes enough moisture for the space without using more energy than necessary. Compare models by Integrated Energy Factor (IEF), then choose the right capacity and equipment type for the room’s size, dampness, temperature, and drainage needs. ENERGY STAR certification is a useful starting point—not a substitute for checking whether a unit fits your building.

How to compare dehumidifier energy efficiency

Look at Integrated Energy Factor, or IEF, rather than comparing advertised watts alone. IEF measures liters of water removed per kilowatt-hour (L/kWh); within the appropriate equipment category and capacity range, a higher number means more moisture removed for the energy used. ENERGY STAR’s testing method includes energy used during dehumidification and low-power modes, replacing the older Energy Factor (EF) metric. ENERGY STAR product criteria and its test procedure explain the measure.

ENERGY STAR’s Version 6.0 criteria, effective October 1, 2025, set these minimum IEF values for certification:

Equipment category Rated capacity or case volume Minimum IEF
Portable 25 pints/day or less 1.70 L/kWh
Portable 25.01–50 pints/day 2.01 L/kWh
Portable 50.01 pints/day or more 3.30 L/kWh
Whole-home Case volume up to 8.0 ft³ 2.22 L/kWh
Whole-home Case volume over 8.0 ft³ 3.81 L/kWh

These are certification thresholds, not a ranking of models or proof that a particular unit suits your building. Compare the IEF of currently certified products in the same category and relevant capacity tier. ENERGY STAR says certified dehumidifiers use 20% less energy than similarly sized conventional units while removing the same amount of moisture; that is a general program comparison, not a guarantee of a specific household’s bill savings. • 【Cutting-Edge Smart Humidity Control for Unprecedented Precision】Newly designed architecture breaks industry's decade-long lack of innovation, enabling it have high-performance chip. Millisecond-level dynamic detection keep humidity within ideal range, with full-stack proprietary humidity compensation algorithm ensuring RHEA-001 exceeds industry standard for humidity accuracy.Exclusive power-off memory function can be used with smart socket, automatically resuming function after power restoration, suitable for smart home or special area like RV.

Choose capacity for both the space and its dampness

Capacity is the number of pints a unit removes in 24 hours under test conditions. ENERGY STAR’s portable-unit guide varies its suggested capacity by both floor area and how damp the space is. Treat these ranges as a starting point: actual performance also depends on temperature, air leakage, moisture entering the space, and how the unit is operated.

Space size Slightly to moderately damp Very damp Wet
Under 2,000 square feet 20–30 pints/day 25–40 pints/day 30–50 pints/day
Over 2,000 square feet 30+ pints/day 40+ pints/day 50+ pints/day

These are ENERGY STAR guide ranges, not guarantees that floor area alone predicts the right size. If replacing an existing unit, the amount of water you empty each day can help estimate the capacity you need. Avoid undersizing; ENERGY STAR advises, “Remember, it’s better to oversize than undersize!” Persistent seepage or a wet building condition may also require fixing the source of moisture rather than relying on dehumidification alone. Read the ENERGY STAR buying guidance alongside the test procedure.

Choose portable or whole-home equipment

Portable units for a room or flexible placement

A portable dehumidifier works in the room without ducting and can be moved where needed. Check more than its IEF and rated capacity: bucket size, automatic shutoff, humidistat, manufacturer-published noise information, and drainage options all affect day-to-day use. A hose connection can reduce bucket emptying, but verify that the unit supports the hose you plan to use and that you can place the drain appropriately.

Whole-home systems for persistently humid buildings

Whole-home dehumidifiers are ducted and generally require permanent installation. ENERGY STAR says they may suit humid climates and relatively well-sealed homes with central air and consistently elevated humidity throughout the house. Correct sizing and professional installation matter; confirm that the system can work with the home’s ductwork and HVAC setup. See ENERGY STAR’s buying guidance and testing information.

Set a useful indoor humidity target

ENERGY STAR describes 30%–50% relative humidity (RH) as generally optimal for buildings, and the EPA recommends keeping indoor humidity between 30% and 50% to control moisture. In colder climates during the heating season, ENERGY STAR notes that 30%–40% RH can help prevent condensation on windows. Use a humidity monitor to check conditions rather than running a dehumidifier continuously without a target. Sources: ENERGY STAR and the U.S. EPA.

Check operating temperature and drainage before buying

Cold conditions can affect performance: ENERGY STAR warns that frost can form on a dehumidifier’s condensing coils below 65°F. If you are addressing a cold basement, verify the model’s specified operating temperature range instead of choosing by IEF alone. For any portable model, check the manual for bucket removal, hose compatibility, automatic shutoff, and the drain location required for continuous drainage. For a whole-home system, include installation and duct compatibility in the decision. See ENERGY STAR’s buying guidance.

A practical checklist for comparing current models

  1. Find certified candidates: Use the ENERGY STAR product finder and confirm a candidate’s current listing and specifications.
  2. Match the category and IEF: Compare portable with portable or whole-home with whole-home, and consider capacity or case-volume tier before using IEF to judge efficiency.
  3. Size for conditions: Use the area-and-dampness ranges as a starting point, then account for persistent moisture sources, room temperature, and air leakage.
  4. Confirm practical fit: Check operating temperature, bucket capacity, drainage method, humidistat, automatic shutoff, and the manufacturer’s noise information.
  5. Check current ownership costs: Verify purchase price, warranty, and support with the manufacturer or retailer. For a household energy estimate, use the specific unit’s power draw and expected runtime with your local electricity rate; IEF is the better basis for comparing moisture-removal efficiency.
  6. Plan whole-home installation: Have a qualified professional assess sizing and duct compatibility before choosing a permanent system.

ENERGY STAR’s product finder showed 535 portable and 24 whole-home listings when accessed October 8, 2026; listings can change, so those counts are not lasting market totals. The available evidence does not establish a universal best model, independent noise or reliability rankings, or a household-specific annual saving. Compare live product specifications rather than assuming that certification alone settles fit.
