The best lock for French patio doors depends on the door material, the lock already fitted and the condition of the whole doorset. For many timber pairs, UK security guidance recommends mortice rack bolts at the top and bottom, or surface-mounted locking bolts. If the doors already have a multipoint lock, operate and maintain that system as designed before adding hardware. No single lock makes every French door secure.
Start with the door and its existing lock
French patio doors are hinged double doors, unlike sliding patio doors. Identify whether the leaves are timber, uPVC, aluminium or another material, and check how they fasten at the meeting edge, top and bottom. A lock that suits one construction may not fit another; drilling or fitting incompatible hardware can damage a leaf or frame.
Consider the complete doorset: locks, hooks or bolts, hinges, frame and nearby glass all affect security. The UK National Protective Security Authority (NPSA), whose advice is written for higher-risk settings, stresses that the doorset and apertures matter—not just the lock. Its guidance describes a multipoint lock with a deadlock and at least two hook bolts, or a combination of mortice and rim locks, as options to consider; these are not a universal household specification. These options are not ranked by resistance: the available guidance does not establish a universal, independently tested “best” lock.

When rack bolts or surface bolts make sense
For timber French doors, Northern Ireland’s nidirect guidance recommends mortice rack bolts or surface-mounted locking bolts. West Yorkshire Police similarly advises mortice rack bolts at the top and bottom of wooden French doors, with surface-mounted alternatives, and mentions hinge protection and locksmith advice. These recommendations concern suitable doors and installation, not a guarantee that any bolt will fit or secure any pair. Have the door and frame assessed if you are unsure where a bolt can engage, or if the leaves do not close squarely.

Use a multipoint lock correctly—and replace parts compatibly
A multipoint mechanism can secure a door at several points, but only if it is fully engaged. Police.uk says modern multipoint locks work as intended when the handle is lifted, the key is turned and the key is removed. If changing a euro cylinder in the UK, Police.uk recommends a three-star TS007 cylinder. A cylinder upgrade alone cannot compensate for a weak door or frame. Consider a secondary handle device only if it fits
A device such as Patlock is an add-on for some double doors with two horizontal handles. Its manufacturer says to lock the doors first and presents the device as secondary security, not a substitute for the doors’ principal locks. Check the manufacturer’s current fit requirements for your handles and door configuration; its fit, approval and performance statements are manufacturer claims. Keep sliding-door measures separate
Sliding patio doors are not hinged French doors. Northern Ireland guidance warns that some patio doors can be lifted off their tracks, and West Yorkshire Police also discusses patio-door security. Measures such as anti-lift blocks or track protection belong to an assessment of a sliding system; they are not default recommendations for hinged French doors. Review nidirect patio-door guidance.

Account for location, installation and safe use
Lock advice and building requirements vary by country and region. Scotland’s 2022 domestic building standards handbook is specific to Scotland and that edition; Halton Regional Police’s advice about securing one leaf of double doors with slide bolts is local Canadian guidance. Neither should be treated as a universal specification. Confirm applicable local requirements and any safe-egress needs before adding locks, especially where a door is an exit route. If you cannot identify the existing mechanism, if the door does not close or lock cleanly, or if a retrofit would require cutting into the door or frame, ask a qualified local locksmith or door installer to assess the complete doorset. Police.uk puts the principle plainly: “Your home is only as secure as its weakest point of entry.”
