“Lint trap” can mean three different things: the lint screen built into a dryer, a washer’s model-specific filter, or an add-on catcher on the washer drain. They do different jobs, so the right choice depends on whether you’re dealing with lint on clean clothes, lint in dryer exhaust, pet hair, or lint headed toward a drain.
Which kind of lint trap do you need?

Washer filters: check the model before searching
A washer does not necessarily have a filter that owners can remove and clean. GE says its top-load washer systems made from 2001 onward generally do not have an accessible maintenance filter because the design flushes lint through the drain system. GE identifies Space-Saving top-load models made since 2014 as an exception with consumer-removable filters. This guidance is specific to GE, not a rule for every brand. Dryer screens and brushes: routine care, not add-on traps
GE recommends cleaning the dryer lint filter after each use and advises cleaning it before each load in its general lint guidance. If fabric softener or anti-static conditioner leaves residue, GE says to wash the screen periodically with warm, soapy water. Follow your appliance manual if its instructions differ. For lint in the filter opening or surrounding area, GE suggests an appliance brush, an extendable lint brush, or a vacuum hose attachment. Unplug the dryer before cleaning there. A brush is a useful maintenance tool, but it does not replace the lint screen or catch lint in washer wastewater.

Washer drain catchers: verify fit and installation
A drain-hose lint catcher is an optional accessory intended to intercept lint in washer wastewater. Electrolux Professional documents drainage nets fitted to drain pipes and larger lint or fluff collectors installed behind washers. Its catalog describes commercial collectors made of stainless steel with removable strainer plates, in 25-, 45-, 75-, and 100-liter sizes; it says collector size should match washer capacity. These are professional-installation products, not evidence that any generic mesh catcher will fit household plumbing. Replacement screens: use the dryer model number
If a built-in dryer screen is damaged or missing, look up a replacement through the manufacturer rather than assuming a similar-looking part will fit. Maytag advertises its Pet Pro Filter and dryer lint-trapping features for pet-hair concerns. The company’s “5X more pet hair” figure compares a Normal cycle using the Pet Pro Filter and option with a traditional agitator without the Pet Pro Filter and option. Reduce lint transfer between clothes
GE suggests separating lint-producing fabrics, including flannel, cotton knits, and terry towels, from lint-collecting fabrics such as fuzzy or brushed fabrics and some synthetic blends. How to choose
- Lint on clothes after drying: Clean the dryer screen and sort lint-producing fabrics separately from lint collectors. If the screen is damaged, find the model-specific replacement.
- Lint or debris in a washer: Check the manual first to learn whether the washer has an accessible filter and how it is maintained.
- Lint headed toward a drain: Consider a drain catcher only after confirming the connection and plumbing fit; professional collectors may require a different installation.
- Lint around the dryer filter opening: Use an appropriate brush or vacuum attachment with the dryer unplugged.
- Pet hair: Evaluate pet-focused features on their own stated comparison and caveats rather than treating them as proof of universal lint removal.
Manufacturer guidance and parts listings establish maintenance steps, product categories, and compatibility cautions—not independent catch-rate comparisons or a tested ranking of the best consumer lint traps.
