There is no single best linear shower drain for every bathroom. The right choice depends on the shower’s dimensions, waste-line position, floor slope and waterproofing system. These four manufacturer-documented options offer different approaches to fixed sizing, grate style and outlet configuration; treat their specifications as product information, not as independent performance rankings.
How to choose a linear shower drain
A linear drain is one part of a shower-floor assembly, not a stand-alone guarantee of a curbless entry or watertight installation. The drain, sloped floor, waterproofing and waste connection must work together. Schluter describes KERDI-LINE for bonded waterproofing assemblies, while LATICRETE describes HYDRO BAN Linear Drain for use with its HYDRO BAN membranes.
Start with the layout and plumbing
- Measure the shower opening and identify the drain length that fits it.
- Decide whether the drain belongs at a wall or within the floor, then confirm how that placement affects the required floor slope.
- Locate the waste line and check whether the candidate’s outlet orientation and connection match it. Configurations vary by product.
- Ask the installer to assess floor structure, access and required floor build-up—especially if the project changes the waste line or adds a curbless entry.
KBRS advises that its described waterproofing layer be supported by a pitched slope of 1/4 inch per foot toward the drain, whether the membrane is under or on top of thick-bed mortar. Check the whole assembly, not just the visible grate
Confirm the exact channel length, outlet connection, waterproofing method, grate compatibility and tile-thickness adjustment in the installation documents for the selected model. Do not assume drains or waterproofing components from different manufacturers are interchangeable. Also check what the listing includes: LATICRETE says its troughs and grates are sold separately, and Schluter’s product page says grate assemblies may be sold separately.

Choose appearance and cleaning access deliberately
Grates can be closed, perforated or designed to accept tile, depending on the product. Consider both the finish and how the drain will be cleaned. LATICRETE documents a removable grate supplied with a removal key and a hair strainer in the trough.

Schluter KERDI-LINE: a bonded-system option with several grate styles
KERDI-LINE is Schluter’s low-profile linear floor drain for bonded waterproofing assemblies. Its channel has a KERDI waterproofing collar and a standard 2-inch no-hub outlet. Center and offset outlet versions can help address different waste-line layouts, but verify the exact SKU and connection before ordering.

Schluter documents channel lengths from 20 to 72 inches in 4-inch increments, with closed, perforated and tileable grate designs. The manufacturer also describes compatible pre-sloped shower trays in several dimensions; where a tray configuration does not fit, it says the drain can be used with a mortar base. KBRS Linear Drain: plan grate style and placement together
KBRS lists tile-in, brushed stainless, oil-rubbed bronze and other grate variants across its drain lengths. Its installation guidance emphasizes planning placement in a curbless shower, allowing for tile thickness and setting the grate slightly below the tile surface. The page shows multiple grate styles and waterproofing options for example configurations. LATICRETE HYDRO BAN Linear Drain: documented outlet configurations and service access
LATICRETE documents vertical waste-line, horizontal side-outlet and threaded-connector configurations, plus eight listed lengths from 24 to 60 inches. It describes the drain for bonded waterproofing installations with HYDRO BAN membranes. Its trough and grate are sold separately, so check the order contents; the manufacturer lists a hair strainer in the trough and a removal key supplied with the grate.
