The right large-room air purifier is the one whose particle CADR matches the full area and ceiling height you need to clean—not necessarily the one with the biggest advertised square-foot figure. For a 600-square-foot room with an eight-foot ceiling, the EPA’s sizing estimate is at least 390 cubic feet per minute (cfm) of CADR. For wildfire smoke, EPA guidance uses a separate benchmark: smoke CADR of at least two-thirds of the room’s area, or 400 cfm for 600 square feet.
Two current manufacturer examples are the Blueair Blue Pure 211i Max and Levoit Core 600S-P. Their published specifications can help frame a comparison, but their room-size claims use different assumptions and are not independent test results.
How to choose a purifier for a large room
Start with the floor area you expect the unit to serve and compare it with the purifier’s particle CADR. For an open-plan home, include the entire connected area rather than sizing only for the corner where the purifier will sit. EPA’s sizing estimates assume an eight-foot ceiling; a higher ceiling calls for a cleaner with more capacity. If one unit cannot serve the area adequately, using multiple units is an option.
EPA’s estimated CADR minimums
These EPA estimates apply to rooms with eight-foot ceilings. They are sizing guidance, not a guarantee of the air quality a particular product will achieve.

| Room area | Estimated minimum CADR |
|---|---|
| 100 sq ft | 65 cfm |
| 200 sq ft | 130 cfm |
| 300 sq ft | 195 cfm |
| 400 sq ft | 260 cfm |
| 500 sq ft | 325 cfm |
| 600 sq ft | 390 cfm |
For wildfire smoke, EPA’s cleaner-air-room guidance recommends a smoke CADR at least two-thirds of the room’s area in square feet. That means at least 400 cfm for a 600-square-foot space. This smoke-focused benchmark is distinct from the EPA sizing table above.
Look past the advertised square footage
A manufacturer’s coverage figure is meaningful only alongside its air-change assumption. Levoit lists the Core 600S-P for 606 square feet at 4.8 air changes per hour (ACH), and separately lists 2,909 square feet at one ACH. Blueair recommends about 674 square feet for the Blue Pure 211i Max at its stated AHAM recommendation. Because the assumptions differ, these figures are not a like-for-like coverage comparison.

How CADR relates to particles, smoke, and gases
CADR—clean air delivery rate—describes how quickly a purifier delivers filtered air for particles. A higher particle CADR can support a larger area or faster particle filtration. CADR does not rate gas removal. EPA explains that HEPA filters are commonly used to achieve high particle CADR, but particle filtration and gas filtration are different jobs.
For odors and gases such as volatile organic compounds, look for activated carbon or another gas adsorbent. EPA notes that these filters can work when they contain a substantial amount of adsorbent material. A particle filter alone should not be assumed to remove gases or odors.

EPA cautions that ozone generators sold as air cleaners can produce indoor ozone at harmful levels. For particle cleaning, prioritize a mechanical-filter device and check its ozone information. EPA identifies AHAM and CARB lists as sources for devices tested to emit little or no ozone; its cleaner-air-room guidance specifically recommends a CARB-certified unit.
Two large-room models with published specifications
The following figures are manufacturer specifications accessed in 2026, not independent hands-on test results. Their stated room coverage rests on different assumptions, so compare CADR and the conditions behind coverage rather than treating the square-foot numbers as directly equivalent.

| Model | Published particle performance and coverage | Published noise and power | Filtration notes |
|---|---|---|---|
| Blueair Blue Pure 211i Max | Smoke CADR: 435 cfm; dust: 452 cfm; pollen: 450 cfm. Recommended room size: 674 sq ft at stated 4.8 ACH. | 23–53 dB; 46 W. | Uses Blueair’s HEPASilent dual-filtration system, not a conventional mechanical-only HEPA design. Blueair claims 99.97% removal down to 0.1 microns. |
| Levoit Core 600S-P | CADR: 391 cfm. Listed for 606 sq ft at 4.8 ACH, or 2,909 sq ft at 1 ACH. | 26–55 dB; 49 W. | Manufacturer describes a three-stage filtration system and replacement-filter options. Check the current product information for the exact compatible filter and filtration terminology. |
These examples illustrate why a single “best” choice depends on the room and the pollutant concern. For smoke, compare smoke CADR. For other particle concerns, consider the relevant particle rating, room dimensions, ceiling height, and the operating conditions behind the coverage claim. Also check the filter design, replacement-filter availability and cost, noise, power draw, and ozone information before choosing. The published specifications above do not establish long-term reliability, independent cleaning performance, or current filter prices.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone. What to check before buying or installing
- Room dimensions: Measure length and width, then size for the full area the cleaner is expected to serve. Account for ceilings higher than eight feet.
- Particle CADR: Compare CADR with the EPA sizing estimate; for wildfire smoke, use EPA’s smoke-CADR guidance.
- Pollutant type: Particle CADR does not establish gas or odor removal. Look for a substantial amount of activated carbon or another adsorbent if gases are a concern.
- Filter replacement: EPA says filters need regular replacement. Verify the exact compatible filter model and its current availability and price.
- Ozone information: Check product emissions information and relevant certification or listings. ENERGY STAR’s air-cleaner criteria require reporting of ozone emissions and state that measured ozone must not exceed 50 ppb under UL 867 Ed. 5.0 for certification; this is a certification requirement, not a universal guarantee for all purifiers.
- Energy and sound: Compare the published power and noise ranges with how and where you plan to use the unit; the listed figures for the two examples are manufacturer specifications.
ENERGY STAR’s room-air-cleaner specification, effective October 9, 2025, uses an Integrated Energy Factor and requires certified products to report CADR by smoke, dust, and pollen, as well as filter type and replacement model, operating power, and ozone emissions. Those disclosures can help when comparing models, but they do not replace checking whether a purifier’s capacity fits your particular space.

What purifier claims can—and cannot—tell you
Manufacturer coverage and filtration statements are product claims, not proof of a health outcome in a specific home. The EPA’s Guide to Air Cleaners in the Home puts it plainly: “EPA does not endorse any manufacturer claims of healthier indoor air from the use of this product.” Use CADR and stated coverage to assess particle-cleaning capacity, and treat claims about broader health benefits with care.
