Compare both published capacities, then weigh basket layout, cleanup, counter space and safety features. The models below are documented examples—not independently tested picks—so their specifications should not be read as proof of faster cooking or better results.
What size deep fryer do you need?
Start with the amount of food you expect to cook in a batch and the space available for the fryer. Oil capacity describes how much oil the appliance holds; food capacity describes a manufacturer’s stated load or basket measure. They are different measurements and neither, by itself, establishes how many people a batch will serve.
For example, Hamilton Beach lists model 35032 for 12 cups (3 liters) of oil and up to 8 cups of food. Presto lists its Dual Basket ProFry 05489 for 5 quarts (4.7 liters) of oil and 12 cups of food. These figures come from the manufacturers’ product pages, which do not specify a standardized serving size.
“Family size” and serving-count claims are also manufacturer descriptions, not comparable measures. Hamilton Beach describes model 35042 as holding 5 liters (21 cups) of oil and cooking up to 13 servings of fries; that serving claim has not been independently assessed here.

Multiple baskets let you cook separate foods concurrently, or keep them apart. Presto says the ProFry’s oblong baskets suit large pieces of fish or chicken. The DualDaddy’s removable divider offers another arrangement: separate two foods or remove the divider for a larger batch. Basket layout is about how you organize food; it does not establish cooking performance.
Which specifications matter in everyday use?
Heating power and temperature control
The Hamilton Beach 35032 lists a 1500-watt immersed element and a 250–375°F temperature setting range. The Presto ProFry lists an 1800-watt immersion element. These are published specifications only: they do not show how quickly either fryer heats or recovers between batches, or which produces better food.

Oil handling and cleanup
Removable parts and ways to drain or pour oil can affect how manageable a fryer is after cooking. Hamilton Beach says the 35032’s oil tank, basket and lid are dishwasher-safe. Presto describes the ProFry’s enameled pot and heating element as removable. Hamilton Beach lists an easy-pour oil spout on the 35042. Follow the model’s own cleaning and oil-handling instructions.
Footprint and storage
Measure the counter and storage space before choosing a high-capacity appliance. The 35032’s listed dimensions are 9.1 inches high, 16.2 inches wide and 8.9 inches deep; the other product information listed above does not provide comparable dimensions. A larger oil capacity may not be useful if the appliance is awkward to store or exceeds the space available.

Indoor countertop fryers are not outdoor turkey fryers
This guide covers countertop electric fryers for routine indoor batches. Outdoor turkey and high-volume fryers are a different equipment class, with substantially different space and placement needs. The Home Depot’s buying guide says most indoor fryers hold from under one quart up to eight quarts of oil, while outdoor fryers can hold 30 or more quarts. Those are broad ranges from a retailer guide, not specifications for every model.
The same Home Depot guide advises placing outdoor fryers on level ground, not in an enclosed or covered area, and at least 10 feet from combustible objects. Treat that as the retailer’s guidance, not a universal rule established here by a fire authority. For any fryer, follow its manufacturer’s instructions and applicable local safety guidance; do not use a countertop appliance outdoors unless its instructions explicitly allow it.

Safety features are useful, not guarantees
Temperature controls, covers, heat-resistant components and detachable cords are worth comparing, but none makes frying risk-free. Hamilton Beach says the 35032’s magnetic cord detaches if snagged to help prevent tipping. That feature does not prevent every spill, burn or fire. Use and maintain the appliance as its manual directs, and keep hot oil and the fryer away from children and other hazards.
Quick Recap
A practical way to choose
- Estimate your usual batch. Look for a stated food capacity as well as oil capacity; if a manufacturer gives only oil volume, do not infer a food load or serving count.
- Choose the basket arrangement. Favor one large basket for a single food or a larger piece; consider divided or dual baskets if you often cook different foods at the same time.
- Check the work area. Confirm that the appliance fits on the counter during use and has a suitable storage spot when it is not in use.
- Review handling details. Compare removable parts, cleaning instructions, oil drainage or pouring features, and cord design in the product listing and manual.
- Keep the comparison evidence-based. Treat wattage, capacity and features as specifications—not as proof that one model cooks faster or better.
How the listed models fit different needs
- For a defined household-size reference: the Hamilton Beach 35032 publishes both oil and food capacity, plus its dimensions and cleanup features.
- For separate foods in concurrent batches: the Presto ProFry 05489 has two oblong baskets and publishes both oil and food capacity.
- For a larger single-basket format: Hamilton Beach lists the 35042 with a 5-liter oil capacity, an extra-large basket and an easy-pour spout; its fries-serving claim is the manufacturer’s, not a standardized measure.
- For a divider-based arrangement: Presto’s DualDaddy 05450 can separate two foods or accommodate a larger batch with the divider removed; its listed oil capacity is 8 cups.
