Then check the installation dimensions, usable capacity, energy-label figures and internal layout. The models below are examples from UK manufacturer and retailer catalogues, not independently tested winners.
What is a larder fridge?
Beko UK describes a larder fridge as “a large refrigerator without a freezer compartment,” distinguishing it from fridge freezers and American fridge freezers. That dedicated chilled space can suit a household that has separate freezer storage or wants more room for fresh and chilled food. Beko UK’s larder fridge range shows the category and its freestanding models.
Choose the installation type before comparing models
Freestanding tall fridges
A freestanding fridge is visible as a standalone appliance and does not need a cabinet front. Measure the available floor space, height and depth, and check that the door can open fully without hitting a wall or nearby units. Include the delivery route in your measurements: a fridge that fits its final position may still be difficult to get through a doorway or hallway.
Integrated tall fridges
An integrated model sits inside a cabinet niche and is concealed behind a matching cabinet door. Check the required niche dimensions, ventilation requirements, door fixing arrangement and hinge configuration against the model’s installation sheet. External appliance dimensions alone do not establish that it will fit a particular cabinet. Beko lists integrated tall models in its integrated fridge range; Miele’s UK catalogue includes built-in refrigerators for a 178 cm niche, illustrating why niche height must match the cabinetry. Under-counter models
An under-counter fridge can work where there is no space for a tall appliance, but confirm that its height and installation requirements suit the counter and surrounding cabinetry. How to compare capacity, fit and running efficiency
Measure the complete installation
Record the available height, width and depth, then compare them with the product’s dimensions and installation sheet. Check door swing, hinge side or reversibility where stated, and clearance when the door is open. For the Smeg UKFS18EV2HB, Smeg lists the appliance at 1860 × 595 × 650 mm and gives 982 mm as the maximum width with the door open; those measurements apply to that model, not to larder fridges generally. Compare like-for-like capacity figures
Look for the capacity field on the product sheet and note whether it is described as total storage or another volume measure. The Smeg UKFS18EV2HB is listed at 380 L total storage, while Howdens lists 310 L for the Bosch KIR81ADD0G. Read the energy class and annual use together
Use the current product energy label and product information sheet to compare the A–G class alongside annual consumption in kWh. Smeg lists the UKFS18EV2HB as E class and 121 kWh/year. The E rating by itself is not a precise estimate of what the fridge will cost to run; an individual household’s cost depends on its electricity tariff and use. Check layout and everyday features
- Adjustable shelves can make it easier to fit taller containers.
- Look for salad or cooler drawers, door balconies and bottle storage if those match the food you keep.
- Check whether the model lists an airflow feature and what its product information says about defrosting.
- Compare the noise rating if the fridge will be near a living or sleeping area.
Warranty, delivery and final checks
Before ordering, compare the delivered price and confirm whether delivery, installation and removal of an old appliance are included. Check current stock and the model’s warranty terms rather than relying on a range-wide headline. - Measure the delivery route as well as the final space.
