Best Ladders for Getting on a Roof: How to Choose Safely

For roof access, choose an extension ladder by measured reach, safe landing access, load rating, and setup instructions—not by a universal length or brand.

For many roof-edge access jobs, the right starting point is a non-self-supporting extension ladder sized for the measured access height—not a single “best” length or brand. Choose a ladder that can reach the landing and extend above it as required, while staying within the ladder’s instructions and load rating. No one ladder fits every roof or job.

How to choose a ladder for roof access

Measure the height of the roof edge you need to reach, then compare that measurement with the ladder’s reach and setup instructions. A ladder’s labeled length is not the same as its usable reach: extension ladders overlap when extended and lean at an angle. Use the manufacturer’s reach information rather than assuming the ladder can be set vertically or that its full length is available for climbing.

For access to an elevated surface, OSHA says to extend the ladder three feet above the surface, or secure it at the top when that extension is not possible. This is an access and setup requirement, not a universal formula that turns roof height into one ladder length. Check the applicable OSHA guidance and your ladder manual for the situation at hand: OSHA extension ladder safety guidance.

For example, if someone asks what ladder is needed for an eight-foot roof line, the measurement alone does not establish a safe ladder length. The correct choice also depends on how the ladder is positioned, its usable reach at that angle, the required extension above the landing, and the model’s instructions.

SocTone Telescoping Ladder, Stabilizers, Extension Ladder(12.5FT Standard)
  • Reduced Wobble: After repeated tests, we added two new triangle stabilizers on the telescopic ladder, which can reduce the shaking amplitude from 30° to 10° and effectively improve the stability by 36% compared with the same product.
  • Safety of Use: The high quality construction of the telescoping ladder ensures that each part retracts safely. Smart locking pins hold the parts in place and prevent sliding, and the ladder will retract smoothly and slowly.
  • Quality Material: The sturdy frame of the telescopic ladder is made of high-quality aluminum alloy, which is resistant to wear and corrosion, rust, high and low temperatures and aging, and can withstand up to 330 pounds of weight.
  • Multi-Scene Application: Changing light bulbs and going up to the attic indoors, or repairing roofs or climbing into RVs outdoors, our aluminum retractable ladders can be used in any scenario where you need a ladder.
  • Easy Portability and Storage: Retractable ladder, tied with a fixed belt, easily pick up, no matter where to take it is very convenient. The ladder 19 * 33 size can also be placed in the trunk or in various corners of the house at will.

Set the ladder at the right angle and maintain contact

Set an extension ladder using the 4-to-1 rule shown in CDC/NIOSH safety material: for every four feet of vertical rise to the ladder’s top support point, place its base about one foot out from the wall or support. Keep three points of contact while climbing, such as two hands and one foot or two feet and one hand. Follow the actual ladder’s instructions and any applicable workplace rules.

CDC/NIOSH also advises extending an extension ladder at least three feet above the roof or structure edge to reduce the risk of tipping or sideways sliding. See its ladder safety guidance. OSHA’s direction to extend three feet above the elevated surface, or secure the ladder at the top when that is not possible, is similarly about safe access. Do not treat either direction as permission to use a ladder that is too short or set up contrary to its manual.

Compare extension ladder options against the job

Once you know the access height and setup constraints, compare models on the factors that determine whether they are suitable for your work:

  • Usable reach: Confirm the model reaches the measured roof edge with the required extension above the landing when set up as directed.
  • Duty rating and load: Account for the person, clothing, carried tools, and other loads. The ladder’s rating and instructions determine its limits; do not assume a rating from its material or size.
  • Material and carrying weight: Compare fiberglass and other available materials in light of the job, transport, and storage. Fiberglass is a category option, not a universal recommendation.
  • Transport and storage: Check the ladder’s closed and extended dimensions, weight, and whether it can be moved and stored safely with your vehicle and site.
  • Accessories: If considering a stabilizer or stand-off, verify that it is compatible with the specific ladder and installed as directed. An accessory does not correct a short ladder or unsafe placement.
  • Instructions and condition: Read the model’s use, setup, and inspection guidance; check the ladder for damage before use.
  • Recall status: Check whether the exact model has been recalled before using it.

ANSI lists separate standards for portable metal ladders and ladder accessories. A standards listing does not replace checking the product’s own instructions, rating, compatibility, and condition.

Fiberglass extension ladders: a category, not a winner

A fiberglass extension ladder may be one option to compare for roof access, but the available evidence does not establish that fiberglass is right for every job or identify a tested best model. Compare the specific ladder’s reach, rating, weight, transport needs, accessory compatibility, and manual. For any electrical exposure, consult the ladder’s labeling and manufacturer instructions rather than assuming a material makes a setup safe.

Check the model and condition before climbing

Inspect the ladder before use and follow the manufacturer’s inspection guidance. Do not use a ladder that is damaged, unstable, or missing or malfunctioning components. Search the exact make and model against current recall notices; a recall can apply to particular models even when other ladders from the same brand are unaffected.
