A bowline makes a fixed loop, a figure-eight can serve as a stopper, a clove hitch secures a line to an object, and a sheet bend joins lines. These knots are not interchangeable, and none should be treated as a universal life-safety solution.
Choose a knot by what the rope needs to do
Start with the task, not a claim that one knot is strongest. NOAA’s knot guide distinguishes knots by function; the rope’s construction and diameter, the activity, and whether you can inspect the finished knot also matter. NOAA: Tied Up in Knots

NOAA specifically warns against using a reef knot, also called a square knot, to join two ropes: it can capsize and slip apart. A familiar or easy-to-tie knot is not automatically suitable for the load.
For climbing, use the knot and checks specified for that use
REI describes the figure-eight follow-through as the most common knot for tying a climbing rope into a harness. Its guide calls for retracing the original figure-eight, dressing the strands so they lie parallel, tightening each strand, and leaving at least six inches of tail. Follow the instructions for the specific climbing system and training you are using; these details are not a recipe for other ropes, harnesses, or activities. REI cautions that a bowline can shake loose when unloaded in climbing use and advises backing it up with a stopper knot. Do not transfer the bowline’s useful fixed-loop behavior in other contexts into an assumption that it is suitable for climbing tie-in.
Complete and inspect the knot before loading
Questions about which strand should clamp or travel through a figure-eight can distract from a more important check: whether the knot is fully tied and dressed. The UIAA Safety Commission’s 2021 guidance says the available videos and published data show no significant overall strength difference from figure-eight tying direction, while limited data suggest a 5–8% configuration difference. The commission emphasizes completion and recommends a buddy check before loading. UIAA Safety Commission: Figure-eight knots

- Check that the knot matches the intended task and is fully formed.
- Dress and tighten it according to the activity-specific instructions.
- Have a partner check it before loading when the activity calls for a partner check.
A general knot guide or a practice cord cannot validate a system that supports a person. For climbing, rescue, or any other person-bearing load, rely on activity-specific training and appropriately rated equipment.
Why there is no universal “strongest” nylon-rope knot
Knot efficiency varies with rope construction, diameter, knot configuration, and test conditions. CMC Rescue reports 487 tests across rope types, but its presentation warns that the datasets were incomplete and inconsistent. Its table of 2008 tests on a particular nylon lifeline lists these efficiencies:

Those percentages describe the table’s particular nylon lifeline and test context; they do not rank knots for every nylon rope. In its 2023 ITRS presentation, CMC recommended assuming 50% knot efficiency in system safety-factor calculations until further testing. For its educational knot activity, NOAA says nylon, polypropylene, manila, or cotton rope about 1/4 to 1/2 inch in diameter works well. That is a practice-material recommendation, not a load rating or approval for climbing, rescue, towing, or fall arrest. NOAA: Tied Up in Knots
