Look for moisture resistance, protection suited to the job, and a design that stays correctly positioned. If you use pads with work trousers, check that the specific pad and garment are approved as a combination or identified as interoperable.
What matters when choosing knee pads for tiling?
Tile setting can involve long periods of kneeling on hard, wet or gritty floors. NIOSH specifically identifies moisture resistance as a consideration for knee pads used by tile setters, while noting that suitable choices also depend on work conditions, availability, fit and cost. Its report is an occupational health evaluation from 1999, not a current comparison of products, so it does not establish a best model.
Use the following checks to narrow your options:
- Surface and hazards: Consider whether you work on a smooth floor or encounter uneven, rough or potentially sharp surfaces. Check the protector’s declared performance level against the job.
- Moisture and debris: Choose a product whose manufacturer identifies it as moisture resistant if your work involves wet tile-setting conditions. Padding that looks thick or has a plastic exterior is not proof that the whole pad is waterproof.
- Retention and movement: Check that the pad remains over the knee as you kneel, bend and move between tasks. Straps and trouser pockets hold protection differently.
- Fit and compatibility: Try the pads with the workwear you will actually use, and follow instructions for orientation and positioning. A pocket or standards label alone does not mean every pad will work with every pair of trousers.
- Inspection and care: Follow the product’s own cleaning and maintenance instructions. Inspect it for damage and replace it when damaged, as the manufacturer directs.
Which knee-protection format suits your work?
The EN 14404 series describes four broad formats. The right choice depends on the work location and conditions; a risk assessment should guide the type and level of protection.

How to check standards, labels and protection levels
EN 14404 is a series of standards for knee protectors, not a universal “tiling certification.” KAN’s 2025 explanation describes a revised series of six parts covering test methods and the four protector types. It identifies force distribution, shock damping, puncture resistance, ergonomics, restraint, marking and instructions among the topics addressed.

For relevant certified protectors, KAN says marking includes the CE mark, standard number and puncture-resistance performance level. It describes levels 0, 1, 1U and 2; the uneven-surface test distinguishes levels 1U and 2 from level 1. Match the declared level to the surface and hazards in your work rather than treating a higher label as a guarantee against injury.
For Type 2 pads, check the standard part and the actual pairing. EN 14404-3:2024 covers an individually examined pad-and-garment combination; EN 14404-4:2024 covers interoperable pads and garments. NEN’s listing described EN 14404-3:2024 requirements for individual Type 2 combinations and identified it as current when accessed on 2026-10-08. Standards and national adoption status can change, so rely on the applicable product labeling and manufacturer instructions.

Why knee pads do not make prolonged kneeling risk-free
KAN reports that screed layers, tilers, interior decorators and other manual trades can spend up to 70% of working time kneeling (2025). That figure applies to the group of trades KAN describes; it should not be read as a measured rate for every tile setter or region. KAN recommends reducing kneeling through organizational measures and technical aids where possible, and wearing suitable knee protectors when kneeling cannot be avoided.
Pads reduce some exposures but cannot prevent every pressure problem or injury. Manufacturer instructions advise changing posture or standing periodically, and prolonged kneeling can still lead to medical complications. Build opportunities to change position into the work rather than relying on padding alone.
