FoodCycler Eco 5 is the strongest fit for larger households, Lomi 3 is the compact connected pick, Reencle is the better match for shoppers seeking microbial processing, and Mill is the high-capacity automated alternative. If you already have convenient compost collection, an airtight countertop caddy may be the smarter choice.
One correction matters before comparing them: most countertop products called composters do not make finished compost. They dry and grind scraps into a smaller by-product that still needs a suitable composting or disposal destination.
What counts as a kitchen composter?
The first question is not which appliance is best, but what the appliance actually produces. Many countertop products marketed as kitchen composters are food-waste pre-processors: they heat, dry, and grind scraps into a smaller, lighter mixture. The U.S. Environmental Protection Agency says these machines do not produce finished compost by themselves. Their output still needs an appropriate destination, such as a backyard compost system, municipal organics program, community-composting site, private collection service, or—where local rules allow—ordinary trash.

Reencle is the main option in this comparison for shoppers specifically seeking that type of system. It should still not be treated as independently certified finished compost unless the manufacturer and local composting authority provide that evidence.
Our 2026 shortlist: Choose the FoodCycler Eco 5 food recycler for a larger household that wants a 5-liter chamber and overnight processing; Lomi 3 for a compact, connected appliance; Reencle Prime, Gravity, or Gravity Pro for a biologically active indoor system; and Mill for high-volume automated processing. If you already have municipal collection, community composting, a backyard pile, or private pickup, an airtight caddy may be the simpler and lower-energy choice.

Manufacturer capacity, energy, noise, accepted-material, warranty, and processing claims are not independent test results. Cycle schedules, load sizes, and measurement methods differ, so the figures above are useful for initial screening rather than a laboratory-style ranking.
#1 Best Overall
- ✅Speed Up Composing Process: More advanced models use rotating to bring oxygen to the center of the bin and paddles inside the chamber to help mix and aerate the composting materials when turned. These improvements or modifications are designed for one reason: to speed the composting process.
- ✅How do Compost Tumblers work? Simple. You load them with green and brown waste from your yard and kitchen. When full, you give them time to work, in other words, heat up. Turning a compost pile mixing the organic materials and the organisms it contains with heat-producing oxygen is the traditional method of keeping the process going full steam. By turning the tumbler, the organic materials are mixed and infused with fresh oxygen.
- ✅Easy to Access Finished Compost: Just Slide the door open and take the organic fertilizer out when the compost is ready. When a check reveals the compost is complete —and this can happen in a matter of weeks —the same access that allowed you to fill the tumbler lets you empty it. Now is the time to spread the results.
- ✅Dual-Bin Design: The dual bin design takes a different approach to the continuous-use composted concept, Two bins are set side-by-side into a single rotating chamber. Thickly insulated compartments conserve the heat generating by the decaying matter, and this greatly speeds the process. This design also allows you to add food waste to one chamber while the other is composting.
- ✅Totally Organic and Money-Saving: If you're looking for a fast, convenient way to compost your kitchen throw-outs, grass clippings, and organic yard waste, our outdoor kitchen compost bin is just right for you! The Compact Compost Tumbler quickly recycles it into nutrient-rich compost.
1. FoodCycler Eco 5: best large-capacity food recycler
The FoodCycler Eco 5 is the clearest fit for a larger household that wants a substantial countertop food-waste processor rather than a small scrap container. FoodCycler positions it for households of four or more, as well as smaller homes that generate a lot of food waste. Its 5-liter bucket is larger than the 3-liter chamber listed for Lomi 3.
The manufacturer lists a 4–9-hour processing cycle, a refillable carbon filter, and maximum energy consumption of less than 1.5 kWh per cycle. It also says the appliance can reduce 5 liters of food waste by up to 90% in volume. That reduction can make scraps easier to store and transport, but it does not turn the result into finished compost.
What the Eco 5 can process
FoodCycler lists fruit and vegetable scraps, meat, fish, poultry, poultry and fish bones, coffee grounds, tea leaves, beans, seeds, legumes, eggs, eggshells, and shellfish among its suitable inputs. It lists sauces, dairy, starches, some bones, and hard pits for small-amount use rather than unrestricted loading.
This is an appliance-specific acceptance list, not a universal composting rule. A backyard compost pile commonly has narrower guidance: the EPA advises against meat, fish, bones, dairy, fats, oils, grease, and many cooked foods in ordinary home piles. A processed output accepted by the appliance may still be unsuitable for your backyard pile, green bin, community site, or garden. Confirm the receiving system’s rules before treating the Eco 5 as a closed-loop solution.
Why choose it
- The 5-liter bucket gives it a strong capacity advantage over smaller countertop units.
- The 4–9-hour window is practical for running a load overnight.
- A refillable carbon filter may reduce the need to buy a complete replacement filter as often as with systems that use disposable cartridges.
- It is a sensible match for households whose main problem is wet, odorous food waste taking up too much trash or freezer space.
Best match: a household with frequent scraps and a garden, green bin, community-composting site, or other confirmed destination for the dried material. Do not buy it expecting the bucket to produce ready-to-use compost.

2. Lomi 3: best compact and connected option
Lomi 3 is the most compact appliance in this shortlist by listed capacity. Lomi’s product information gives it a 3-liter capacity, dimensions of 11 by 11 by 12 inches, a weight of 16 pounds, and North American 110-volt operation. The manufacturer lists noise below 45 dB.
It offers three modes. Express is listed at 3–6 hours, Grow at 11–17 hours, and Cleaning is intended for maintaining the appliance. Lomi says the unit heats and grinds food waste, controls moisture and temperature, and uses airflow and dual filtration for odor management. Its principal modes are listed at roughly 1–1.1 kWh, but that figure should not be compared directly with another brand’s per-cycle or per-day number without knowing the load and test method.
Modes and output
Express is the shorter processing choice when the priority is reducing scraps quickly. Grow is the longer mode intended to produce what Lomi calls pre-compost. Neither label changes the central limitation: the material should not automatically be called finished compost or assumed to be ready for direct use in soil.
Lomi says it accepts a broad range of food waste, including fruits, vegetables, meat, dairy, breads, grains, and some yard waste. As with the Eco 5, acceptance by the machine does not decide whether the resulting material is allowed in a local organics stream. Local programs may prohibit processed food by-products, may require specific bags, or may accept only unprocessed scraps.
The warranty and membership detail matters
The current offer distinguishes a Just Lomi purchase with a one-year warranty from a membership package that includes recurring filter shipments and a lifetime warranty while the customer remains an active member. That makes the membership a continuing ownership condition, not merely a one-time extended-warranty upgrade. Check the current terms, filter price, cancellation rules, and shipping status before buying.

- Twin chambers: Two separate chambers allow one side to finish composting while leaving the other side available to add fresh wastes; Constant alternation of the two sides will create an uninterrupted stream of nutritious compost
- 360⁰ Tumbling Design: The rotating design prevents you from digging or mixing the pile by hand; And the deep fins on eight panels make it easier to turn the compost bin
- Excellent Aeration: Air vents can make the air fully circulate and will not cause an explosion due to excessive internal pressure; Deep fins can better break the clumps, which is conducive to the full fermentation of oxygen
- Sturdy & Durable Construction: Constructed of premium metal frame and high-quality pp plastic body, this tumbling composter is corrosion-resistant, weathering-resistant, sturdy, and durable for long-lasting service life
- Garden Gloves Included: The gloves that not only protect your hands from injury, but are also waterproof, making them easy to clean; With 4 durable ABS plastic claws for easy digging, planting and other gardening work
The product page reviewed for this guide presents Lomi 3 in a pre-order context. Availability and delivery timing are volatile, so verify those details at publication and again before purchase.
Best match: a smaller kitchen where compact dimensions, multiple modes, and connected features matter more than maximum capacity. App control may improve convenience, but it does not change the underlying processing method or turn pre-compost into finished compost.
3. Reencle Prime, Gravity, and Gravity Pro: best microbial-processing alternative
Reencle belongs in a different category from a simple grind-and-dry machine. The company markets these models around microbial processing, making them the leading choice here for readers who specifically want an indoor system designed to maintain biologically active breakdown.
What’s actually slowing this PC down?
Pick the symptom - the matching free tool is one click away.
That distinction is useful, but it should not be exaggerated. The published specifications establish the intended process and model capacity; they do not provide independent testing in this comparison for pathogen elimination, finished-compost maturity, nutrient content, or garden performance. Treat Reencle as the microbial-processing alternative, not as a product whose soil results this guide has independently verified.
Model differences
- Reencle Prime: listed for one to three people, with a recommended daily processing amount of 700 grams and a 1-kilogram maximum.
- Reencle Gravity: listed for three to four or more people, with a recommended daily amount of 1 kilogram and a 1.5-kilogram maximum.
- Reencle Gravity Pro: shares the larger models’ listed capacity guidance and adds Wi-Fi app connectivity.
Reencle lists average power consumption of 1.25 kWh per day for Prime and 1.13 kWh per day for Gravity and Gravity Pro. Average noise is listed as 28 dB for Prime and 24 dB for the larger models. Those are daily and average figures, unlike the per-cycle figures published for some other products, so they should not be used to declare Reencle universally cheaper or quieter.
Prime and Gravity do not list app connectivity in the technical information reviewed here; Gravity Pro does. Reencle recommends replacing the carbon filter every 9–12 months. Match the filter and maintenance procedure to the exact model rather than assuming the parts are interchangeable.
Who should consider Reencle?
Choose Reencle when the biological-processing approach is your primary reason for buying and you are prepared to follow an ongoing operating routine. It is less suitable for someone who simply wants a short overnight cycle and a dry, compact output. Before purchase, determine how the manufacturer directs you to use the processed material and whether your local composting route accepts it.
4. Mill Food Recycler: best high-volume automated option
Mill is the capacity-focused alternative in this group. Its current product information lists a 6.5-liter capacity and says the bin can process up to 40 pounds of food scraps, including bones and pits. That makes it attractive to a high-volume household that wants less frequent emptying and automated handling.
Mill calls its output Food Grounds and explicitly says the device is not a composting device. The company describes the grounds as food with water, bulk, odor, and unpleasant handling reduced. That wording is important: Mill should be compared on capacity, convenience, and what happens to the output—not advertised as producing finished compost.
Mill’s published acceptance claims are also not a substitute for local disposal guidance. Even if the appliance can process bones and pits, a municipal green-bin program or community-composting site may not accept the resulting grounds. Check the receiving route before choosing Mill, especially if you are buying it to avoid landfill disposal.

Best match: a high-volume household that values automation and capacity and has already confirmed where the Food Grounds will go.
You may not need an electric appliance
An electric food recycler solves a handling problem, not necessarily the entire composting problem. If your home already has a reliable downstream route, storing scraps until collection may be cheaper, quieter, and less energy-intensive.
Airtight countertop caddy
An airtight countertop compost caddy with replaceable charcoal filter is often enough when you can empty it every few days into a backyard pile, green bin, community drop-off, or private pickup. A caddy does not dry or sterilize scraps, so it needs regular emptying and sensible cleaning. Its advantages are low purchase cost, no electricity, no motor noise, and no processed by-product whose destination must be explained.
Backyard composting
Backyard composting can be the most direct route when you have suitable outdoor space and are willing to manage the balance of food scraps, brown materials, moisture, air, and temperature. Ordinary backyard guidance is generally more restrictive than the input lists for electric appliances. Meat, fish, bones, dairy, fats, oils, grease, and many cooked foods can attract pests or create odor and are commonly excluded from a basic home pile.

Vermicomposting
Worm bins are a separate option for some apartments and small homes. They need a suitable indoor or sheltered location and a controlled diet; they are not a universal solution for meat, dairy, oily foods, or large quantities of scraps. If your household produces more food waste than a worm bin can comfortably handle, community or municipal collection may be more practical.
Community, municipal, and private collection
Community composting can work for people without a yard. Municipal green-bin programs and private food-scrap pickup may also accept food waste and transport it to a commercial composting or organics-processing facility. Availability, price, accepted materials, container rules, liner rules, and service area vary by city, county, utility, and provider. Search for local food-scrap pickup or community composting in your area, then confirm the rules directly.
Do not assume that a nearby organics program accepts material from a food recycler. Some programs want raw food scraps only; others may have specific requirements for processed food waste or compostable liners. Local rules control the correct disposal route.

1. Identify the actual job
Write down the problem you are trying to solve. If it is leaking trash, odor, freezer storage, or infrequent collection, a grind-and-dry appliance may help. If the goal is to make finished compost for a garden, an appliance alone may not do that. You may need a compost pile, a community site, a municipal program, or another biological processing stage.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute2Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems3Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches2. Measure your household’s scraps
People-per-household labels are only rough guidance. For a week, collect your food scraps and estimate the volume or weight. Compare that number with the actual machine specification:
- FoodCycler Eco 5 lists a 5-liter bucket.
- Lomi 3 lists a 3-liter capacity.
- Reencle publishes daily throughput rather than using only a chamber-size comparison.
- Mill lists a 6.5-liter bin and claims capacity for up to 40 pounds of scraps.
Also consider how often you are willing to load and empty the unit. A larger bin is not automatically better if you produce very little waste, while a small chamber may become frustrating in a busy household.

Reinforced leg supports prevent barrel sagging, even under full load—making it the most durable outdoor compost bin for year-round composting.
3. Compare processing method and output destination together
Do not choose the appliance first and ask about the output later. For every candidate, answer these questions:
- Does it mainly dry and grind, or does it maintain microbial processing?
- What exact name does the manufacturer give the output?
- Can your backyard pile, green bin, community site, or private service accept that output?
- If no composting route accepts it, are you comfortable with the remaining disposal option allowed by local rules?
FoodCycler’s Foodilizer, Lomi’s pre-compost, and Mill’s Food Grounds should all be described accurately rather than grouped under the single, more appealing label of finished compost.
4. Check accepted materials against your habits
If your kitchen produces mostly fruit and vegetable scraps, several options may fit. If you want to process meat, dairy, bones, shellfish, pits, sauces, or cooked leftovers, compare the exact manufacturer list and any small-quantity restrictions. The fact that one machine accepts a material does not mean another does.
5. Account for filters and recurring costs
Odor management depends partly on filtration, and filters are an ownership cost:
- FoodCycler Eco 5: uses a refillable carbon filter.
- Lomi 3: has a membership offer that includes recurring charcoal-filter shipments and a lifetime warranty while membership remains active. A non-membership purchase is listed with a one-year warranty.
- Reencle: recommends carbon-filter replacement every 9–12 months.
- Mill: requires a current check of its purchase, leasing, subscription, and take-back terms.
Before ordering, price the replacement carbon filter for the exact model and check whether the unit uses replaceable media, a complete cartridge, or a subscription shipment. A low initial price can be less attractive if the ongoing filter arrangement does not suit your household.
6. Treat energy and noise figures carefully
FoodCycler lists less than 1.5 kWh per cycle. Lomi lists below 45 dB and roughly 1–1.1 kWh for its principal modes. Reencle lists average daily use of 1.25 kWh for Prime and 1.13 kWh for Gravity and Gravity Pro, with average noise of 28 dB and 24 dB respectively.

Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsFix Now →Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteDriver Scan →These figures are not directly equivalent. One brand may report a cycle, another a day; loads, run times, moisture content, and measurement methods may differ. Use them to identify likely differences, then check the manual and your electricity rate. A simple estimate is:
annual electricity use = energy per cycle × cycles per year
For a daily-use model, use the manufacturer’s daily figure instead. Do not multiply a per-cycle claim by every day unless you actually expect to run that many cycles.
7. Plan placement and routine maintenance
Choose a stable location near the kitchen but away from splashing water. Check each model’s manual for clearance, ventilation, loading limits, cleaning instructions, and filter access. Lomi provides a Cleaning mode; other models have their own maintenance procedures. Keep the unit accessible enough that emptying, wiping, and filter changes do not become chores you postpone.

Who should buy an electric food recycler?
An electric unit is most defensible when all four conditions are true:
- Your household produces frequent wet food scraps.
- Odor, leakage, freezer storage, or infrequent collection is a significant problem.
- You lack convenient outdoor composting space or want a more controlled indoor routine.
- You have a confirmed destination for the processed material.
It is less compelling when a municipal or community program already offers convenient collection, when you generate only a small amount of food waste, or when you expect the appliance to replace a complete composting system. In those cases, a filtered caddy and regular collection may avoid electricity, filter purchases, and uncertainty about the output.
Final buying recommendations
- Choose FoodCycler Eco 5 for the best direct fit if you want a 5-liter chamber, a 4–9-hour cycle, and a larger-household food recycler.
- Choose Lomi 3 if compact size, multiple modes, and connected features are more important than maximum capacity. Check its pre-order status, filter costs, and membership-linked warranty before purchase.
- Choose Reencle if microbial processing is the feature you specifically want. Select Prime for the smaller published household range, or Gravity and Gravity Pro for higher daily throughput; choose Gravity Pro if Wi-Fi app connectivity matters.
- Choose Mill if high capacity and automated reduction are the priority and you have a verified route for its Food Grounds.
- Choose a caddy or collection service if you already have access to real composting. It is often the simplest solution and avoids buying an appliance that still needs a downstream composting route.
Before finalizing any purchase, verify current price, inventory, shipping, warranty, subscription, replacement-filter, take-back, and local disposal details. The most important distinction remains the same: making scraps smaller and drier is useful, but it is not the same as making finished compost.
Frequently Asked Questions
Do countertop kitchen composters make finished compost?
Usually no. EPA describes most residential food-waste appliances as pre-processors that grind and dehydrate scraps. Their output still needs an appropriate composting, organics-collection, or disposal route. Reencle is marketed around microbial processing, but this guide does not independently verify that its output is finished compost.
Free tools Windows power users keep installed
One-click scans. No signup required.
Can these machines process meat and bones?
FoodCycler lists meat, fish, poultry, bones, shellfish, dairy in limited amounts, and other materials that ordinary backyard compost guidance commonly restricts. Lomi and Mill also publish broad acceptance claims. Always follow the exact appliance instructions and the rules of the place receiving the output.
Is a countertop caddy better than an electric food recycler?
A filtered, airtight countertop caddy is usually better when you already have convenient municipal green-bin collection, community composting, backyard composting, or private pickup. It costs less to operate and creates no processed by-product, but it does not reduce scraps or control them indefinitely.
Which kitchen food recycler uses the least electricity?
Reencle lists average daily consumption of 1.25 kWh for Prime and 1.13 kWh for Gravity and Gravity Pro. FoodCycler lists less than 1.5 kWh per cycle, while Lomi lists roughly 1–1.1 kWh for its principal modes. These figures use different reporting periods and test conditions, so they are not directly comparable.
How often do kitchen food-recycler filters need replacing?
FoodCycler uses a refillable carbon filter. Reencle recommends replacement every 9–12 months. Lomi’s membership package includes recurring filter shipments, while its non-membership offer has different warranty terms. Verify the exact model and current replacement arrangement before buying.

Bottom line: FoodCycler Eco 5 is the strongest large-household food-recycler pick, Lomi 3 is the compact connected choice, Reencle is the microbial-processing alternative, and Mill is the high-capacity automated option. But if you already have municipal, community, backyard, or private composting access, an airtight caddy may be the better buy. None of the grind-and-dry products should be presented as producing finished compost on the countertop.
