There is not enough verified evidence to identify which kindling splitters were reviewed or ranked in 2021. What can be compared from manufacturer documentation are two distinct manual designs: the mallet-struck Forest Master USAB and Scheppach’s wall-mounted lever splitter. The right choice depends on how you can mount and store the tool, the dimensions of your wood, and the operating method you prefer—not on an unsupported claim that one is faster or better.
What the available product information can—and cannot—establish
The title’s 2021 date suggests a historical review, but no verified record establishes which products that review covered or how they were tested. Current manufacturer documentation supports a practical comparison of two manual splitters; it does not establish a 2021 ranking or an independently tested performance winner.
A manual kindling splitter breaks firewood into smaller pieces using either a mallet or a lever. The Forest Master USAB is the mallet-based option. Scheppach’s model 7905907001 is designed to be fixed to a wall and operated with a lever. Their published specifications and instructions are useful for checking fit and setup, but they are not comparative test results.
How the two documented designs differ
| Feature | Forest Master USAB | Scheppach 7905907001 |
|---|---|---|
| Operating method | Wood is positioned on the blade and struck with a mallet; the manufacturer says multiple strikes may be needed. Forest Master manual | Wall-mounted, lever-operated design. Scheppach UK product page |
| Mounting and placement | Use on even ground when unmounted; the manual recommends securely bolting it to a heavy base, such as a stump or tree round. Forest Master manual | Designed for wall mounting. Scheppach UK product page |
| Wood dimensions | The manual gives minimum diameter and minimum wood height requirements relative to the blade; check the manual for the exact model before use. Forest Master manual | Manufacturer-listed log length range: 90–340 mm. Scheppach UK product page |
| Published construction details | Manual describes a ductile cast-iron body with an all-weather coating; it notes that the coating can fade. Forest Master manual | Cast-iron body; 220 mm resharpenable steel blade and 560 mm wooden handle. Scheppach UK product page |
| Published dimensions and mass | Not stated in the cited manual. | 135 × 85 × 590 mm; net mass 4.5 kg, as listed by the manufacturer. Scheppach UK product page |
Which design fits your work area?
Choose the Forest Master-style mallet design if a heavy base is practical
The USAB can be used unmounted on even ground, but its manual recommends bolting it securely to a heavy base. That makes the available work surface and your ability to fasten the tool important considerations. The process involves placing the wood upright, tapping it until it holds on the blade, removing your hand, and then striking it with sufficient force.
#1 Best Overall
- POWERFUL: The 12 ton hydraulic log splitter can split logs up to 17.7 in long and 7.9 in diameter (Depending on wood density)
- LABOR-SAVING: Handles of this wood splitter are 37 in with two speeds creating plenty of leverage and with ultimately safety you could work together with kids
- ECO-FRIENDLY: The manual log splitter doesn't need a gasoline engine or electric motor helping you eliminate exhaust emissions
- EFFICIENT and CONVENIENT: The log splitter is equipped with a spring-loaded return knob which helps the ram reset quickly and the it is equipped with wheels for easy portability including uneven ground, grass, dirt and more
- SAFE AND RELIABLE: The log splitter is constructed of precision laser-cut steel frame design without gas, oil or cords
Consider the Scheppach wall-mounted design if you can install a fixed tool
Scheppach specifies a wall-mounted lever tool with stepped base positions and a clamping design intended to keep hands away from the blade. Its 90–340 mm stated log-length range is a useful fit check, not a guarantee that every log within that length will split equally well. Confirm that your wood dimensions suit the tool and that the wall installation is appropriate before buying.
Check wood fit, maintenance, and storage
- Measure the wood you plan to split. Compare it with the exact model’s limits. For the Forest Master USAB, the manual’s minimum diameter and height requirements matter; for Scheppach 7905907001, the listed log-length range is 90–340 mm.
- Account for upkeep. Forest Master advises against striking the blade directly and notes that its coating can fade. Scheppach describes its steel blade as resharpenable.
- Plan for storage. The Forest Master manual says to replace the safety cover when the tool is not in use. The Scheppach page establishes wall mounting, but the cited specifications do not describe a separate cover or storage procedure.
Use the manufacturer’s safety and setup instructions
Follow the manual supplied with the exact tool you own; instructions for one model are not a substitute for another model’s guidance. For the USAB, Forest Master directs users to wear protective goggles and gloves, restrict operation to adults, keep other people at least three metres away during use, and replace the safety cover after use. Before striking, the operator should remove their hand from the wood. The manual also advises using even ground when the splitter is unmounted or securing it to a heavy base.

- THE SAFEST & MOST EFFECTIVE SPLITTER: This patented log splitting tool sets a new standard in safety & efficiency in making kindling from logs and firewood. Unlike a dangerous wood splitter wedge, our splitter cuts logs easily with minimal labor.
- UNIQUE DESIGN HANDLES LONG & THICK LOGS: The extra wide mouth of the Kindle Quick design enables it to cut wider logs than other tools. The tall base allows it cut longer logs and the slanted alternating teeth split logs at an angle and prevent jams.
- BASE READY FOR ATTACHMENT: Our Kindling Cracker features bolt holes on the base so it can be fixed to stump or other anchor. This provides extra stablity & height for even more efficient splitting. The X style base is more stable than other types.
- MADE FROM DURABLE CAST STEEL: Expect many years of service from your firewood splitter. It's 5.5 pounds of premium quality cast steel with a black all-weather coating. Cast steel is stronger & harder and is far less prone to rust than cast iron.
- HANDLES MAKE CARRYING EASY: The handle design allows the Kindle Quick to be easily carried to the bonfire, cottage, RV & campsite. The base also works as a crate to carry wood wherever you need it. So cut your kindling & pack it up for carrying too!
These are the manufacturer’s instructions for the USAB, not a general safety standard. The cited Scheppach product page describes its clamping design but does not provide a complete operating-safety procedure in the available specifications; use the instructions supplied with that model.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone. Can either splitter be called the best?
Not on the available evidence. The manufacturer pages document different operating and mounting arrangements, along with selected dimensions and care information. They do not provide controlled, head-to-head results for speed, ease of use, durability, or splitting performance. Choose by installation options, wood fit, maintenance, and the operating method that suits your setup rather than treating either product as a proven performance winner.
