Best Kettles for Open Fires: How to Choose a Camping Kettle

Choose an open-fire kettle by verifying the exact model’s fire rating, comparing usable capacity, and matching its design to your camp and brewing style.

For a campfire kettle, start by checking the manufacturer’s guidance for the exact model: a “camping kettle” is not automatically safe to put over an open flame. Then choose a capacity that covers your group, a material and shape that suit how you’ll use it, and a handle you can manage safely around heat. The options below are manufacturer-described products, not independently tested rankings.

How to choose a kettle for an open fire

Confirm the exact model is fire-rated

Look for explicit manufacturer approval for open-fire or direct-fire use. The label “camping kettle” alone is not enough: OXO says its Camp Stove Kettle is for gas, electric, and induction cooktops, but “not for use on open flame” (OXO). By contrast, Primus describes its Campfire Kettle as suitable for a stove or open fire (Primus).

Choose capacity for the number of drinks

Compare like with like. A listed vessel capacity, its practical or usable capacity, and a system’s stated “boil capacity” may mean different things. For example, Primus offers 0.9 L and 1.5 L versions and associates them with 1–2 and 2–3 people, respectively. Kelly Kettle lists systems with boil capacities of 0.6, 1.2, or 1.6 litres. These are manufacturer specifications, not independent measures of how many mugs you will get; mug size and the water you leave in the kettle affect the count.

Match the design to your brewing style

  • General hot water: A conventional stainless-steel kettle is a straightforward choice if you want a familiar vessel with a spout and handle.
  • Pour-over coffee: A narrow-spout kettle gives more controlled pouring, but pour-over models may have less capacity and may require extra care with hot handles.
  • Large-volume use: A cast-iron kettle can suit fireside drinks or cooking, but consider its bulk and whether you need a hook for hanging it.
  • Integrated fire system: A chimney-draft kettle uses its own fire base rather than sitting over a separate campfire. That is a different setup to pack and operate.

Open-fire kettle options compared

These options are included because their manufacturers describe them as suitable for open-fire use. Product descriptions and specifications can change; confirm the exact model and regional listing before buying.

Which type suits your camp?

For a few mugs without a specialty setup

Start with a conventional kettle whose manufacturer explicitly permits open-fire use. Primus lists two capacities and a folding handle; Petromax describes both ember use and hanging use. Check the chosen size against the volume you actually need rather than relying only on a people-per-kettle estimate.

For pour-over coffee

Hario and KINTO offer pour-over-oriented designs with open-fire guidance for specified models. Their controlled-pour form is useful for coffee, but check practical capacity and the exact model’s approval. Hario specifically cautions that its handle may become hot over an open flame.

Use an open-fire kettle safely

Hot metal, steam, and boiling water can cause burns. Follow the instructions for the exact model rather than assuming one kettle’s rules apply to another. Snow Peak’s CS-115R manual, for example, says to use a potholder because the kettle stays hot during and after use. It warns against heating the kettle empty, filling above its stated 1 qt amount, putting firewood or charcoal on the lid, and excessive heating; for wood or charcoal, it instructs users to keep heat from coals and flames slightly distanced (Snow Peak manuals). Hario separately warns that its handle can become hot on an open flame.

A practical buying checklist

  • Does the manufacturer explicitly approve the exact model for open fire or direct fire?
  • Is the stated capacity a practical fill amount, full vessel volume, or system boil capacity?
  • Will the kettle make enough water for your group in one boil, allowing for your mug size?
  • Does the handle fold, hang, or remain manageable with the gloves or potholder you plan to use?
  • For a pour-over model, does the capacity and spout suit your brewing method?
  • For cast iron or an integrated chimney system, are the added bulk and setup compatible with your trip?
