The right jar opener depends on what is holding the lid tight and how you want to use the tool. An adjustable handheld opener adds grip; an under-cabinet model holds a lid while you turn the jar; a vacuum-release tool lifts a vacuum-sealed lid; and an automatic opener grips and rotates the lid mechanically. No independent head-to-head testing is available for the examples below, so “best” means the design that best fits your containers, workspace and preferred operation.
How to choose a jar or bottle opener
Start with the lid and the task, not a general claim that one opener works for everything. Check whether you need extra grip, a fixed gripper, vacuum release or powered rotation. Then compare the lid’s diameter with the maker’s stated range, and consider whether you have space for a mounted tool or prefer one you can put away.
- Grip: A handheld opener can help you hold and turn screw-on lids.
- Hold the lid in place: A mounted gripper stays fixed while you turn the jar beneath it.
- Release vacuum: A vacuum-release design lifts the lid slightly before you unscrew it.
- Mechanical rotation: An automatic design uses arms to grip and rotate the lid.
“Jar opener” does not necessarily mean “bottle-cap opener.” Check the specific product’s listed uses, and measure the lid you want to open before relying on a published size range.
Which opener design suits your kitchen?
Adjustable handheld: Zyliss E930048
The Zyliss E930048 is a handheld opener with an adjustable rubberized grip and locking mechanism. Zyliss lists it for screw-on lids measuring 2–10 cm in diameter and describes use with jars, bottles and other screw-on lids. That stated range is useful for checking fit, but it is not a guarantee that the tool will work with every lid or container shape. See Zyliss’s product details.

- ELECTRIC JAR OPENER FOR WEAK HANDS, SENIORS & ARTHRITIS — The Robotwist Deluxe is a fully automatic, hands-free electric jar opener designed for anyone who struggles to twist off tight lids. Just set it on the jar, press one button, and it grips and opens the lid for you — no strength, no straining, no twisting.
- HIGHER TORQUE OPENS THE TIGHTEST, TOUGHEST LIDS — This Deluxe 7321 model delivers upgraded torque over the original Robo Twist, powering off vacuum-sealed and stubborn lids that manual grippers and rubber pads can't budge. If a lid won't move by hand, Robotwist does the work instead of you.
- UNIVERSAL ADJUSTABLE FIT FOR SMALL & LARGE JARS — Two self-adjusting no-slip vice grips automatically clamp to lids from 1.2 to 3.5 inches in diameter, so one device handles everything from small spice jars to big pickle and sauce jars. No settings to change and no attachments to swap — it sizes itself to each jar.
- TRUE HANDS-FREE AUTOMATIC OPERATION — Unlike squeeze grippers that still need hand strength, Robotwist does the gripping and turning for you. Place it, press the button, and it holds the jar steady and spins the lid off on its own — ideal for one-handed use or anyone recovering from surgery or injury.
- CORDLESS & BATTERY OPERATED — USE IT ANYWHERE — Runs on 2 AA batteries (not included), so there are no cords and no outlet needed. Keep it on the counter, in a drawer, or take it anywhere in the kitchen.
This type is a practical choice if you want a tool you can store in a drawer rather than install. Its operation is still hands-on: you position the tool on the lid and turn it. Consider whether that grip-and-turn motion fits your needs.
Mounted under a cabinet: UN-SKRU
UN-SKRU must be installed beneath a cabinet or shelf before use. Its gripper holds the lid while you turn the jar, so it requires a suitable mounting location and both hands. The maker states that it accommodates lids ½–5 inches across and says the gripper has no sharp teeth. UN-SKRU describes the operation this way: “The gripper holds the lid still while you turn the jar to the left with both hands.” This is the maker’s description, not independent performance testing. Read UN-SKRU’s instructions.

- 𝗞𝗜𝗧𝗖𝗛𝗘𝗡 𝗚𝗜𝗙𝗧 𝗙𝗢𝗥 𝗦𝗘𝗡𝗜𝗢𝗥𝗦 - Help parents open everyday jars with more confidence and independence. A practical electric jar opener for elderly parents, weak hands and daily kitchen use
Choose a mounted model if you want a fixed opening point and have a suitable shelf or cabinet. It is less flexible to place or store than a handheld tool, and the installation requirement matters if your kitchen has no appropriate mounting surface.
Automatic grip and rotation: Hamilton Beach OpenEase 76800
Hamilton Beach describes its OpenEase 76800 as using outer arms to grip the jar and inner arms to grip and rotate the lid. This is the mechanically operated option among these examples. The product description establishes how the mechanism is intended to work; it does not establish success rates, reliability or suitability for every user. Check the manufacturer’s description.

Vacuum release: Avanti SKU 12622
Avanti says its SKU 12622 opener lifts slightly against a vacuum lid to release the vacuum before the lid is unscrewed. The maker says the lid can still reseal the container afterward. This approach targets vacuum-sealed lids; it should not be assumed that vacuum is the cause whenever a lid is difficult to open. See Avanti’s product information.

It can be especially useful for people who find repeated gripping and twisting uncomfortable during everyday kitchen tasks

Multipurpose and assistive opener styles
A Performance Health UK product guide lists several styles in a six-in-one opener, a lever opener and a mounted V-shaped opener. Its page 624 lists the six-in-one tool for seals, bottle caps, ring pulls, jar lids and bottle tops; the lever-style opener for 20–110 mm tops; and the mounted V-shaped opener for 25–75 mm tops. The guide is older, so these details show the range of designs and stated specifications in that catalog, not current product availability. View page 624 of the Performance Health UK guide.
If you want one tool for several container tasks, check that the exact model lists each task you need. A broad label such as “jar opener” is not enough to establish that it also handles bottle caps, seals or ring pulls.

The sizes use the makers’ stated units and descriptions; they are not a controlled comparison of the products’ usable capacity. The multipurpose catalog examples are not included in the table because their listed top ranges are not stated on the same basis as the two jar-lid ranges.
Operation and safety notes
Follow the instructions for the specific opener and container. For UN-SKRU, that means installing the tool first and using both hands to turn the jar beneath the gripper. For an automatic opener, follow its product instructions rather than assuming every jar shape or lid will work with the mechanism.
Kuhn Rikon’s instruction sheet for its Gripper Jar Opener also covers can opening. Its warning that going around a can more than once can create burrs or slivers applies to the can-opening function; it is not a warning specific to ordinary jar opening. Read the Kuhn Rikon use-and-care sheet.
Jar Jaw says its design uses rubber grippers rather than metal teeth and claims this avoids lid damage. That is the manufacturer’s claim, not an independently established safety comparison. See Jar Jaw’s product page.
Quick Recap
Quick decision guide
- Choose an adjustable handheld design if you want a tool you can store separately and the lid is within the maker’s stated size range.
- Consider a mounted gripper if you have a suitable installation spot and are comfortable turning the jar with both hands.
- Look at an automatic opener if you prefer a mechanism that grips and rotates the lid; confirm the maker’s instructions match your intended containers.
- Consider vacuum release when the lid is vacuum-sealed and that mechanism fits the task.
- Choose a multipurpose model only after checking its listed tasks if you also want to open bottle caps, ring pulls or seals.
