Best Built-In Washing Machines for a Smarter Laundry Room Remodel

If you are searching for the best integrated washing machine for a U.S. laundry room, the first thing to know is this: most American homes are not built around true European-style cabinet-door washing machines. In the U.S., “integrated” usually means a compact 24-inch front-load washer that can fit under a counter, inside a laundry closet, beside cabinetry, or stacked with a matching ventless dryer.

For most built-in laundry room projects we would start with the LG WM1455HWA. It is a 24-inch, 2.4 cubic foot compact front-load washer with ENERGY STAR certification, steam, Wi-Fi, and fabric-sensing features. The current appliance-only price found in the research pack is about $1,149 on sale, with an MSRP around $1,499. It is a strong fit for apartments, condos, ADUs, mudroom laundry walls, guest suites, and under-counter layouts where a full 27-inch washer will not work.

The best value alternative is the GE GFW148SSMWW, another 24-inch, 2.4 cubic foot ENERGY STAR front-load washer with steam, typically seen around $1,118 to $1,249. For a premium laundry space, a Miele W1 compact washer is the higher-end option, often around $2,199 for current compact models, with premium compact washer and dryer pairs commonly exceeding $4,500 to $6,000. If the room is extremely tight and you want one machine instead of a separate washer and dryer, the LG WM3555HWA all-in-one washer/dryer combo is a practical small-space option, with pricing found around $1,699 on sale.

The appliance matters, but the room matters more. On our job sites, the best washer is the one that fits the actual opening, clears the door swing, reaches the drain and outlet safely, can be serviced without tearing out cabinetry, and will not shake a second-floor closet every time it spins. That is the difference between a nice appliance purchase and a laundry room that works for 10 years.

What “Integrated Washing Machine” Means in a U.S. Home

In the United Kingdom and Europe, an integrated washing machine often means a washer hidden behind a cabinet door. Those machines may use metric dimensions, kilogram capacities, EU energy labels, and 230-volt electrical assumptions. That does not translate cleanly to most U.S. houses.

In American remodeling, homeowners usually mean one of five things when they say “integrated washing machine”:

#1 Best Overall
Auertech Portable Washing Machine, 28lbs Twin Tub Washer Mini Compact Laundry Machine with Drain Pump, Semi-automatic 18lbs Washer 10lbs Spinner Combo for Dorms, Apartments, RVs
  • [Large Capacity Twin tub Washer] Auertech portable mini washer has two separate tubs, washing tub and spin tub, allowing you to wash and dry clothes at the same time. The compact and lightweight design makes it easy to fit in bathrooms or closets. Perfect for dorms, apartments, RVs, etc. Note: There is water in the washing machine because it is tested before packaging, we do not sell used products!
  • [Powerful Performance] Equipped with a 1300 rpm powerful motor, clothes can be washed quickly and efficiently. Washer capacity: 18lbs, Spin capacity: 10lbs. Recommended maximum water line: 13.5 inches. The transparent window allows you to see the process of washing or spinning. Our mini washer machine can achieve low consumption and save water, while free your hands.
  • [Equip with Drain Pump & Adjustable Inlet Hose] This portable washing machine equipped with a drainage pump. You can choose freely drain water to a higher position or a convenient place randomly. You never need to worry about the drainage problem.
  • [Separate Time Control & Lint Filter]Users can control washing time, washing mode and spinning time through the three control switches on the panel. There is two water inlets on the panel for connecting the hose to easily add water. With the simple control panel, this mini washer is easy to operate and you can get clean clothes in three steps.
  • [Product Usage Tips] 1. Don't overload. Overload may cause the motor to turn on overheating protection. 2. Balance the spinner to prevent it from losing balance, hitting the inner walls, stopping work. 3. If the machine doesn’t drain, check that the water hose is not clogged or bent, which may prevent the spinner from working properly. 4. Make sure the drain height is less than 45 inches.
  • Built-in washer: A washer installed under a countertop or between cabinets.
  • Compact washer: Usually a 24-inch-wide front-load washer with about 2.2 to 2.5 cubic feet of capacity.
  • Closet-depth washer: A washer shallow enough for a laundry closet, hallway, or condo utility room.
  • Stackable washer: A washer designed to stack with a matching dryer using a manufacturer-approved stacking kit.
  • All-in-one washer/dryer: One machine that washes and dries in the same drum, usually ventless.

True panel-ready washing machines are rare in the U.S. market. Because of that, we usually design the laundry room so the washer looks built in, while still keeping the appliance removable. That means finished side panels, a durable counter, a properly sized opening, a clean hose path, accessible shutoffs, and enough rear or side clearance for vibration and service.

Best Integrated-Friendly Washing Machines for 2026

The models below are not ranked only by appliance features. They are ranked by how well they work in real remodels: fit, serviceability, utility requirements, vibration control, cost, and pairing options.

Best one-machine setup LG WM3555HWA all-in-one 24 inch Compact combo About $1,699 sale; $2,199 list Washes and dries in one unit, useful where venting or appliance depth is limited
Best flexible drying setup Compact washer plus ventless dryer 24 inch class Varies Often $2,500 to $6,000+ per pair Good for condos, closets, ADUs, and interior laundry locations without exterior vent access

Best Overall: LG WM1455HWA

The LG WM1455HWA is the strongest first look for many U.S. homeowners planning a built-in laundry room. It is a 24-inch compact front-load washer with a 2.4 cubic foot drum. That capacity is smaller than a typical full-size 27-inch washer, but the tradeoff makes sense where cabinetry, hallway depth, or stacking is the controlling factor.

From a construction standpoint, this model gives us a lot to work with. It can fit into compact openings, it is ENERGY STAR certified, and it offers modern features without demanding the footprint of a full-size laundry pair. The research pack showed a current LG sale price of $1,149, with MSRP at $1,499. For a remodel budget, we would normally carry the washer at about $1,150 to $1,500 before delivery, hoses, installation, haul-away, cabinetry, or electrical/plumbing work.

Best use cases include a kitchen-adjacent laundry cabinet, a second-floor laundry closet, a condo utility space, an ADU laundry wall, or a primary suite laundry niche. It is not the washer we would choose for a large household washing king bedding several times a week.

Best Value: GE GFW148SSMWW

The GE GFW148SSMWW is another 24-inch, 2.4 cubic foot compact front-load washer. It is ENERGY STAR certified and includes steam. Pricing in the research pack was generally around $1,118 to $1,249, which puts it near the LG but often with retailer-dependent savings.

We like this kind of machine where the homeowner wants the benefits of a built-in laundry layout without moving into premium European appliance pricing. It is a practical fit for narrow rooms, closets, and secondary laundry spaces. As with any compact front-loader, the key is measuring depth, not just width. Door projection, rear hoses, drain routing, and the dryer pairing can make or break the design.

Best Premium: Miele W1 Compact Washers

Miele W1 compact front-load washers are the premium option for homeowners who care about fit, finish, long-term feel, and a more refined laundry setup. Current compact W1 models are typically in the 24-inch class with about 2.26 cubic feet of capacity. The research pack found Miele compact washer pricing around $2,199 for the WWD660WCS, while the older WXR860WCS was listed by Miele USA as permanently out of stock.

For high-end remodels, we would consider Miele when the laundry room is part of a larger design package: custom cabinets, stone or solid-surface counters, premium flooring, tight acoustic goals, and a matching ventless dryer. The cost is not just the washer. A premium compact washer/dryer pair can exceed $4,500 to $6,000 before installation and cabinetry.

Best All-in-One: LG WM3555HWA

The LG WM3555HWA is a 24-inch compact all-in-one washer/dryer combo. It is not the fastest choice for a busy family, but it solves a real construction problem: one appliance, one drum, no transfer step, and less space than a separate pair. The research pack showed a Home Depot compact washer category sale price of about $1,699, down from $2,199.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

We consider all-in-one units for condos, tiny homes, rental suites, accessory dwelling units, and interior laundry closets where dryer venting is difficult or not allowed. The tradeoff is cycle time and load rhythm. A separate compact washer and dryer pair usually handles back-to-back loads better. An all-in-one unit is better when saving space and simplifying the rough-in matter more than speed.

How to Choose the Right Washer for the Room You Are Building

Do not order cabinets first and then try to force a washer into the leftover opening. That is how homeowners end up with pinched hoses, doors that hit trim, shutoffs trapped behind a machine, or a washer that cannot be removed without cutting the countertop.

On our job sites, we want the appliance selected before rough plumbing, electrical, drain layout, cabinetry, and countertop templating. Even among 24-inch compact machines, the real-world fit changes by model because of depth, rear connections, door swing, stacking kit height, pedestal compatibility, and service clearance.

Measure More Than Width

A “24-inch washer” does not mean a 24-inch finished opening is enough. You need working room. At minimum, confirm:

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
  • Rough opening width, height, and depth
  • Appliance depth with hoses connected
  • Door swing and door projection
  • Hallway, stair, and doorway delivery path
  • Countertop underside clearance
  • Baseboard and trim interference
  • Drain standpipe location and height
  • Water shutoff location
  • Outlet location and cord reach
  • Washer removal path after cabinets are installed

For built-in designs, we usually prefer a removable side filler, removable toe kick, or access panel near the shutoffs. A laundry room can look finished without trapping the machine. Service access is not a luxury; it is part of a good installation.

Capacity: Compact vs Full Size

Most compact built-in-friendly washers are around 2.2 to 2.5 cubic feet. Full-size U.S. front-load washers are commonly much larger and usually require a 27-inch width class with more depth. If your household washes bulky bedding, large towels, sports gear, or multiple loads per day, compact capacity may frustrate you.

Compact washers are best for small homes, condos, ADUs, guest suites, aging-in-place suites, mudrooms, and secondary laundry areas. For a family laundry room serving four or five people, we would usually look hard at whether a full-size 27-inch front-loader can be made to work before committing to compact.

Vibration and Noise

Vibration is not just an appliance issue. It is a floor issue. A compact front-loader in a stiff slab-on-grade laundry room behaves differently than the same washer in a second-floor closet framed with long joists.

For bedroom-adjacent laundry rooms, open-plan homes, and multifamily buildings, choose a washer with good vibration control and plan the room correctly. The floor should be flat, solid, and finished with a water-tolerant surface. The washer should be leveled carefully. If the laundry is on an upper floor, we also think about joist stiffness, blocking, pan details, and how spin vibration may travel into nearby rooms.

Washer, Dryer, or All-in-One?

The washer decision is tied to the dryer decision. In many built-in laundry rooms, the dryer is the harder part. A washer needs water, drainage, power, and leak control. A dryer may need either a proper vent path to the exterior or a ventless condenser or heat-pump setup.

Compact Washer Plus Heat-Pump Dryer

A compact washer paired with a ventless heat-pump dryer is often the best answer for interior laundry closets, condos, ADUs, and remodels where routing a dryer vent would be expensive or impossible. It also avoids a long duct run through finished walls or ceilings.

The tradeoff is cost and drying behavior. Ventless dryers may take longer than conventional vented dryers, and premium compact pairs can run $4,500 to $6,000 or more. Still, when venting is not practical, paying for the right ventless pair is usually cleaner than forcing a bad duct route into the house.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

All-in-One Washer/Dryer Combo

An all-in-one combo is useful when the space is too tight for two machines or when the homeowner values not transferring clothes between units. It can be a smart choice for a studio, guest suite, small condo, or ADU.

It is not the best choice for high-volume laundry. You cannot wash the next load while the first load is drying. Drying times can be longer. For one or two people, that may be fine. For a household with kids, bedding, uniforms, and towels, a separate washer and dryer pair usually works better.

Energy and Water Ratings to Check Before You Buy

ENERGY STAR says shoppers should compare a washer’s IMEF and IWF ratings. In plain terms, a higher IMEF is better for energy performance, and a lower IWF is better for water use. ENERGY STAR certified clothes washers are available in stackable, under-counter, and combination washer-dryer designs, which makes the program useful for built-in laundry planning.

Do not rely only on the sticker on a showroom floor. Product lines change, certifications update, and availability changes. The Department of Energy finalized updated residential clothes washer and dryer efficiency standards with compliance required on March 1, 2028. For a 2026 purchase, confirm the current model in the ENERGY STAR Product Finder before finalizing the appliance schedule.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Energy performance matters, but it should not override fit and serviceability. A very efficient washer installed in a cabinet opening with no shutoff access and no removal clearance is still a poor construction decision.

Installed Cost: Appliance, Hookups, Cabinets, and Permits

The washer price is only one line item. Built-in laundry rooms often involve carpentry, plumbing, electrical, flooring, drywall, painting, venting, and inspections. A homeowner replacing an existing washer in the same location may spend a few hundred dollars on installation. A homeowner creating a new laundry room can spend five figures.

Scope Typical 2026 Cost Range What Drives the Price
Compact washer only $1,100 to $2,200 Brand, capacity, ENERGY STAR status, steam, Wi-Fi, auto-dosing, availability
All-in-one compact washer/dryer $1,700 to $2,200 Ventless drying, compact engineering, combo controls
Premium compact washer/dryer pair $4,500 to $6,000+ Premium washer, matching ventless dryer, stacking hardware, delivery
Simple installation with existing hookups About $100 to $300; some simple hookups start around $50 Hoses, leveling, haul-away, stairs, shutoff condition
Broader washer/dryer installation average About $750 Minor repairs, connection changes, delivery complexity
Adding or moving hookups $650 to $2,000 Plumbing distance, wall access, drain routing, electrical work
New outlet work $100 to $450 Panel access, circuit requirements, GFCI/AFCI updates
New drain pipe $225 to $1,200 Distance to drain, wall/floor demolition, pipe access
Dryer vent installation $140 to $600 Exterior wall access, duct length, roof or wall termination
New laundry room $5,000 to $30,000 Plumbing, electrical, mechanical, cabinetry, flooring, permits, finished-wall work
Permit budget $25 to $500+ Jurisdiction, project scope, separate trade permits

Hidden cost risk is real. Replacing a freestanding washer with a compact integrated layout can trigger new cabinets, counter modifications, flooring patches, trim work, drain corrections, shutoff replacement, GFCI updates, dryer vent changes, and delivery constraints. Before ordering the appliance, price the whole room.

Code, Safety, and Leak Control

Laundry rooms involve water, electricity, vibration, and sometimes exhaust. That combination deserves more planning than a simple appliance swap.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Electrical requirements vary by jurisdiction and adopted code cycle, but laundry areas commonly require proper dedicated circuits and GFCI protection. Some locations may also require AFCI protection depending on the circuit and local code. Do not assume an older outlet behind the existing washer is acceptable for a new built-in installation.

Drainage matters too. A washer drain needs a proper standpipe, trap, and approved connection. The International Residential Code includes requirements for washing machine waste connections, and local inspectors may enforce details such as standpipe height, trap location, pipe sizing, and access. If the laundry is moving to a second floor or finished area, confirm the drain plan before framing is closed.

Leak Protection We Recommend

For second-floor laundry rooms, finished basements, condo closets, and laundry areas over living space, we treat leak protection as part of the build. A good setup may include:

  • A drain pan sized for the appliance footprint
  • An accessible shutoff valve box
  • Braided stainless steel supply hoses
  • A leak detector or automatic shutoff device
  • Water-resistant flooring extending under the appliance
  • A service path so the washer can be pulled without damaging cabinets

A pan alone is not a guarantee. If it is not drained, or if the washer leaks outside the pan, water can still damage framing, drywall, flooring, and finished ceilings below. The homeowner should also know where the shutoffs are and how to use them.

When to DIY and When to Hire a Pro

A simple washer replacement can be a homeowner task if the hookups are already correct, the outlet is in good condition, the shutoffs work, the drain is proper, and the appliance is not being built into cabinetry. Even then, the machine has to be moved safely, leveled correctly, and connected without kinking hoses.

Equipped with Auto Unbalance Detection (AUD), however, it's able to automatically fix the unbalance issue through allowing more water to come in. It will also alert the user if the problem can't be fixed, ensuring a safe and pleasant experience. NOTE : Refer to the PDF attached below in Technical Specification for the Installation and Troubleshooting Steps

DIY is reasonable when you are replacing a washer in the same location, using existing code-compliant hookups, not modifying cabinets, not adding a dryer vent, and not changing electrical or plumbing. Budget $50 to $300 for a simple install if you hire it out, plus any delivery, haul-away, or hose upgrades.

Hire a licensed pro when you are moving the laundry location, adding hookups, changing circuits, modifying drains, cutting a new dryer vent, installing a second-floor laundry area, building cabinetry around the appliance, or working in a condo or multifamily building with association rules. Adding or moving hookups commonly runs $650 to $2,000, and creating a new laundry room can land between $5,000 and $30,000 depending on distance to plumbing, electrical panel capacity, demolition, finishes, cabinetry, and permits.

For built-in laundry rooms, we also recommend involving the cabinet installer before appliance delivery. The cabinet plan should include clear opening dimensions, removable fillers or access panels, counter support that does not block removal, and trim details that leave the washer serviceable.

Best Choice by Project Type

For a Condo or Apartment Laundry Closet

Choose a 24-inch compact front-load washer such as the LG WM1455HWA or GE GFW148SSMWW. Pair it with a matching ventless dryer if exterior venting is not allowed. Confirm HOA or building rules before ordering, especially for venting, drain pans, automatic shutoffs, noise, and installation hours.

For an ADU or Guest Suite

An all-in-one unit such as the LG WM3555HWA can make sense where one or two people will use the laundry and space is tight. If the ADU has enough room, a compact washer and heat-pump dryer pair will usually serve guests or tenants better because loads can move more efficiently.

For a High-End Primary Laundry Room

Consider a premium compact pair such as Miele W1 if the design calls for a 24-inch appliance class and the budget supports it. For larger households, check whether a full-size 27-inch front-load washer can be built in with proper clearances. Premium compact is not automatically better if the household really needs full-size capacity.

For a Mudroom Laundry Wall

A compact front-loader under a counter can work very well in a mudroom, especially with upper cabinets, a hanging rod, and a durable folding surface. Use water-resistant flooring, keep the shutoffs accessible, and make sure the washer door does not fight with the room’s traffic path.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

For a Second-Floor Laundry Closet

Prioritize vibration control, leak protection, and access. A compact front-loader is often easier to fit, but the floor structure and pan details matter. We would rather spend money on proper rough-in, shutoffs, leak detection, and a stiff floor than hide a machine beautifully in a risky closet.

Our Practical Recommendation

For most U.S. homeowners who want an integrated or built-in-looking washing machine, start with a 24-inch ENERGY STAR compact front-load washer. The LG WM1455HWA is the best all-around recommendation because it balances size, capacity, features, and price. The GE GFW148SSMWW is the value alternative. Miele W1 is the premium route for compact luxury spaces. The LG WM3555HWA all-in-one is the small-space answer when one machine is more important than laundry speed.

Before you buy, verify the exact model dimensions, ENERGY STAR listing, dryer pairing, stacking kit, outlet requirements, drain height, door swing, delivery path, and service clearance. In a built-in laundry room, the best appliance is the one that fits the construction plan, not just the one with the longest feature list.

If we were designing the room from scratch, we would select the washer and dryer first, then lay out plumbing, electrical, drainage, venting, cabinetry, pan protection, flooring, and access around those appliances. That sequence prevents the most expensive mistakes: beautiful cabinets that block service, counters that trap machines, vents that cannot be routed, and compact washers chosen too late to fit correctly.

Frequently Asked Questions

What is the best integrated washing machine for most U.S. homes?

For most built-in or under-counter U.S. laundry rooms, the LG WM1455HWA is the strongest overall choice. It is a 24-inch, 2.4 cubic foot ENERGY STAR compact front-load washer with steam, Wi-Fi, and a built-in-friendly footprint.

Are true cabinet-door integrated washing machines common in the United States?

No. True panel-ready washing machines are much more common in the UK and Europe. In the U.S., homeowners usually use a 24-inch compact front-load washer designed to fit under a counter, in cabinetry, in a closet, or stacked with a matching dryer.

How much does a built-in washing machine installation cost?

A simple washer installation with existing hookups often costs about $100 to $300. Adding or moving hookups commonly costs $650 to $2,000. Creating a new laundry room can range from about $5,000 to $30,000 depending on plumbing, electrical, venting, cabinetry, flooring, and permits.

Is a compact washer big enough for a family?

Compact washers around 2.2 to 2.5 cubic feet work well for condos, ADUs, guest suites, small homes, and secondary laundry areas. Larger families washing bulky bedding and multiple loads per day are usually better served by a full-size 27-inch washer if the room can accommodate it.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Should I choose an all-in-one washer/dryer or a separate compact pair?

Choose an all-in-one if space is extremely limited and you value one-machine convenience. Choose a separate compact washer and dryer pair if you do frequent laundry, need better back-to-back load capacity, or want more flexible drying performance.

Do built-in laundry rooms need permits?

Permit requirements depend on local code and project scope. A simple appliance replacement may not need a permit, but moving plumbing, adding drains, changing electrical circuits, installing dryer venting, or creating a new laundry room often does.
