Check your exact cooktop manual first. Some manufacturers permit transfer plates with caveats; Bosch’s cited manual says, “Do not use adapter plates between the hob and the cookware.”
How an induction adapter plate works
An induction adapter plate, also called an interface disc or converter disc, is a magnetic plate that sits on an induction cooking zone. The induction hob heats the plate, which then transfers heat to a pot or pan placed on top. This indirect route may be useful for occasional specialty cookware that does not have a magnetic base, but it changes how heat reaches the pan.
Induction itself requires cookware with a ferromagnetic base. Bosch also specifies a flat, smooth bottom; Whirlpool lists enameled steel, cast iron, and stainless steel designed for induction, and suggests checking cookware with a magnet. See Bosch’s hob instructions and Whirlpool’s cookware guidance.
Check whether your cooktop allows one
Approval depends on the appliance. GE says transfer plates should work on its induction cooktops but does not recommend them: efficiency and performance are significantly reduced, the disc produces more heat, and glass damage is possible, though unlikely. Bosch’s manual for the cited model states, “Do not use adapter plates between the hob and the cookware.” That is model-specific guidance, not a rule to generalize to every brand. Follow the manual for your exact hob; if its instructions prohibit adapter plates, do not use one.

Read GE’s transfer-plate guidance and the instructions supplied with the appliance. If the manual is unclear, ask the manufacturer about the precise model rather than assuming a disc is compatible.
What to compare when choosing a disc
- Cooktop permission: confirm the appliance maker permits the arrangement.
- Diameter and fit: compare the disc with the cooking zone and the pan’s base. Hama/Xavax warns that a cookware diameter unlike the adapter plate can waste energy or trigger the hob’s protection circuit. This warning is specific to its instructions, not a universal sizing standard.
- Construction: note the stated materials and design, but treat claims about fast or even heating as manufacturer claims; the available product information does not establish a comparative performance ranking.
- Handle and safe handling: check whether a handle is heat-resistant or removable, and whether the instructions explain how to place, move, and cool the plate.
- Availability and warranty: verify these on the seller or manufacturer page before buying; product listings and stock can change.
For example, Olympia describes its 26 cm adapter as having double magnetic AISI 430 stainless-steel layers around an aluminum core, a removable heat-resistant handle, and an intended cookware diameter range of 24–32 cm. Those are product-specific specifications, not general recommendations for every hob or pan. Olympia also says to lift the adapter rather than slide it across the cooktop. Its page showed the item sold out when accessed, so check current stock at the Olympia product page.

Other examples illustrate different design and instruction details, rather than a tested ranking:
- Hama/Xavax item 00111397: its operating instructions provide compatibility examples and safety directions. Verify the diameter and current seller details for any listing.
- Nordic Ware 8-inch Heat Tamer and Stove Adapter Plate, SKU 09700: the manufacturer lists aluminized steel, a five-year warranty, gas and induction use, and recommends moderate heat while warning against high heat. Its page showed out of stock when accessed; check current availability at the Nordic Ware product page.
- Max Burton 6010 Induction Interface Disk: an older Aervoe/Max Burton data sheet describes an 8-inch stainless-steel/aluminum/stainless-steel construction with a heat-resistant handle. It says operating efficiency varies with cookware and heat transfer; confirm current availability and whether the stated compatibility applies to your cooktop.
Use an adapter plate cautiously
Follow the disc maker’s instructions as well as the cooktop manual. Hama/Xavax warns that its adapter can reach 300°C and remain hot after the hob is switched off. That is a warning for this product, not a measured temperature for every adapter plate.

- STAINLESS STEEL CONSTRUCTION: Made from durable stainless steel, this 7.9 inch induction plate adapter is built to withstand high heat and daily use.
- DETACHABLE HANDLE: Features a convenient detachable handle for easy and safe maneuvering of the heat diffuser on and off the stovetop.
- WIDE COMPATIBILITY: Works as a heat diffuser on electric and gas stoves, as well as an induction adapter plate for cookware not compatible with induction cooktops.
- EVEN HEAT DISTRIBUTION: Designed to distribute heat evenly across the cooking surface, helping to prevent hot spots and improve cooking results.
- VERSATILE SIZE: At 7.9 inches in diameter, this cooktop heat diffuser accommodates a wide range of pots and pans for versatile everyday cooking.
- Set the adapter flat on the cooking zone before turning on the hob. Do not slide it across the glass; Olympia specifically says to lift its adapter when moving it.
- Place the cookware on the plate and keep it there while the plate is on the hob. Do not leave the setup unattended.
- Use the heat setting recommended by the adapter maker and avoid high heat where the instructions warn against it. The added plate can retain substantial heat, so do not assume the pan will respond like cookware placed directly on the hob.
- After switching off, allow the plate to cool naturally. Use its handle if the instructions provide one, and keep hands and other heat-sensitive items away until it is cool.
When to choose compatible cookware instead
If you cook often, a pan with a magnetic, flat base sized appropriately for the cooking zone is the more direct option. Confirm compatibility with both the cookware maker and the hob manual. An adapter may preserve occasional use of a specialty pot, but it adds an intermediary heat-transfer surface and may reduce performance; choose it only if your appliance permits it and its size and instructions suit your cookware.
