Yellow sticky traps catch adult flies, while a properly labeled Bti treatment may help target larvae in the soil. These steps address fungus gnats—the common houseplant pest—not every insect people call a gnat.
First, make sure the gnats are coming from houseplants
Fungus gnats are associated with moist, organic potting media. Look for small flies around plants, especially when watering or disturbing the soil. If you cannot connect the flies to a plant, check for another breeding source before treating: drain-breeding gnats require a different approach. The University of Maryland Extension distinguishes fungus gnats from drain-breeding gnats.
Which indoor gnat control works for fungus gnats?
| Method | What it targets | Role in control | Important qualification |
|---|---|---|---|
| Letting soil dry between waterings | Breeding conditions and immature stages in soil | Addresses the damp conditions that support fungus gnats; make this the first step. | Dry the surface only as much as the plant tolerates. Guidance varies, so no single drying depth suits every plant. Virginia Cooperative Extension recommends letting the top 13 mm (0.5 inch) dry; other extension sources give different practical depths. |
| Removing decaying plant debris and standing water | Breeding conditions | Reduces damp, decomposing material around plants. | Keep plant needs in mind; do not leave water in saucers. |
| Yellow sticky traps | Adult flies | Captures adults and helps monitor activity near affected plants. | Traps do not treat larvae in the potting soil, so use them alongside moisture management. UC IPM describes traps as a monitoring and adult-capture measure. |
| Bti product | Larvae, when the product and application are appropriate | Can be considered as an additional larval control. | Product labels differ. Check the current label for houseplant-soil use and follow its directions; a registration record listing fungus gnat larvae does not by itself establish directions for indoor potting soil. EPA’s Mosquito Bits registration page lists fungus gnat larvae among pests. |
How to get rid of fungus gnats step by step
- Find the source. Check which plants have flies around them, and whether adults appear when the soil is watered or disturbed. If no plant is a clear source, investigate other breeding sites such as drains rather than treating every plant.
- Change the watering pattern. Where the plant can tolerate it, let the soil surface dry between waterings. Empty saucers and remove dead leaves or other decaying material from the soil surface. Do not apply a fixed drying depth to every plant: Virginia Cooperative Extension’s fungus gnat guidance recommends drying the top 13 mm (0.5 inch), while other sources vary.
- Catch and monitor adults. Place yellow sticky cards near affected plants or in pots. Use the number of flies caught to monitor adult activity, not as proof that the soil larvae have been controlled. Oregon State University Extension also recommends non-pesticide measures for fungus gnats in houseplants.
- Consider a larval treatment only if needed. Bti may be an option, but use it only when the product’s current label permits the intended indoor plant application. Follow label directions and applicable local guidance; do not infer houseplant-soil use from a pest list alone.
Choosing between traps, drying, and Bti
For the fewest extra products
Begin by correcting persistently wet soil, clearing decaying material, and emptying saucers. These measures address the conditions fungus gnats use to breed. The Virginia Cooperative Extension publication describes allowing the soil surface to dry as “probably the best and easiest control for these pests”; the recommendation applies where the plant tolerates that drying.
For visible adult flies
Use yellow sticky traps near affected plants to capture adults and track activity. They can make the flying insects less bothersome, but they do not reach larvae in the potting mix. Keep moisture management in place rather than relying on traps alone.
When considering Bti
Bti is a possible larval-control option in extension guidance, but the actual product label determines whether and how it can be used on indoor plants. The EPA registration page lists fungus gnat larvae as a pest; its listed use sites do not establish houseplant-soil directions. UC IPM says insecticides are rarely warranted for houseplant fungus gnats, and Washington State University Extension does not recommend pesticides for this situation in its guidance. If you choose a pesticide, rely on the current label and local guidance, not a general claim that indoor use is automatically safe or necessary.
Why the right drying depth depends on the plant
Extension recommendations differ: Virginia Cooperative Extension specifies drying the top 13 mm (0.5 inch), while other guidance ranges from about one-half inch to two inches. That variation is a reason not to treat any one depth as universal. Use the shallowest drying interval your plant can tolerate and avoid leaving the pot continuously wet. Cornell IPM and Oregon State University Extension offer additional houseplant fungus gnat guidance.

Common mistakes to avoid
- Using traps as the only control: they catch adults but do not directly address soil larvae.
- Over-drying a plant: drying guidance is not one-size-fits-all; protect the plant while reducing persistently wet conditions.
- Applying a product based only on its pest list: confirm that the current label covers the intended indoor plant use and application.
- Treating the wrong source: if flies are coming from a drain or another location, houseplant measures will not address that breeding site.
