A digital thermo-hygrometer is a practical default for checking room temperature and relative humidity (RH) together. Choose one by its stated accuracy across the humidity range you expect, temperature range, readable display, and whether you need history, alerts, remote sensors, or app access. A gauge measures conditions; it does not control them.
What indoor humidity should you aim for?
The U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) recommends keeping indoor humidity at 30–50% RH. Its broader indoor-air-quality guidance says to keep humidity below 60%, ideally in the 30–50% range. These are household comfort and moisture-management guidelines, not performance ratings for a gauge. The EPA recommends using a humidity gauge to assess home humidity. EPA: Care for Your Air: A Guide to Indoor Air Quality; EPA: What can I do to improve indoor air quality in my home?
What type of gauge should you choose?
A hygrometer measures humidity; a thermo-hygrometer measures humidity and temperature. For most household checks, a digital thermo-hygrometer makes both readings easy to see in one place. Analog gauges are another option, while connected units and models with remote sensors suit people who want readings from another room or do not want to check a local display. The available evidence does not establish that one category is more accurate than another.
| Type | Useful when | What to verify |
|---|---|---|
| Analog humidity gauge | You want a simple local indication without relying on an electronic display. | Look for a stated accuracy and operating range; do not assume the dial is precise because it is easy to read. |
| Digital thermo-hygrometer | You want temperature and RH displayed together for routine room checks. | Check humidity and temperature accuracy, measurement ranges, display readability, and power requirements. |
| Connected or remote-sensor gauge | You want remote readouts, multiple sensing locations, history, or alerts. | Confirm which features are included, whether an app or network connection is required, and the sensor’s stated accuracy and range. |
Which specifications matter most?
Humidity accuracy across the range
Read the accuracy tolerance alongside the RH range and conditions under which it applies. Accuracy may vary across a device’s range. For example, NIST’s Dickson TH550 specifications list ±2% RH from 0–60% RH and ±3% RH from 61–95% RH at 23 °C. The same page lists temperature accuracy of ±1 °C. These figures illustrate how specifications can be presented; they are not a product recommendation or evidence of current retail availability. NIST: Dickson TH550 specifications

Temperature range and accuracy
Check that the gauge’s stated temperature range covers the conditions where you will use it, and that its tolerance is appropriate for your purpose. A display that reports tenths of a degree is not necessarily accurate to a tenth of a degree; use the accuracy specification, not the number of displayed digits, to judge precision.
Display, history, and power
- Readability: Consider digit size, contrast, and whether RH and temperature appear at the same time.
- History and alerts: Minimum/maximum readings, trends, and notifications can help if you cannot check the display often. Decide whether those features justify added setup or connectivity.
- Power and upkeep: Check battery type and replacement expectations, connection requirements, and any app dependency in the current product documentation.
Where should you place a humidity and temperature gauge?
Place it where it can represent the room conditions you want to monitor. Direct sunlight, nearby heating or cooling outlets, and localized heat or moisture sources can skew a reading. Follow the device manual for placement and allow the instrument to stabilize as directed. NIST explains that radiation and airflow affect air-temperature measurement; its guidance on outdoor measurement setups is not a universal indoor-placement rule, but the same measurement influences are a reason to avoid misleading locations. How should you interpret readings that fall outside the target?
Do not treat one reading as a diagnosis. Check that the gauge is positioned appropriately, then look for a consistent pattern over time. A humidity gauge cannot identify mold, a leak, or a building defect. If excess moisture persists, investigate and address its source; EPA advises controlling moisture and drying water-damaged areas. EPA: Care for Your Air: A Guide to Indoor Air Quality
If readings remain low and you are considering a humidifier, monitor RH while using it. EPA says not to humidify indoor air above 50% RH and provides cleaning and use guidance in its Use and Care of Home Humidifiers.

What does calibration mean for a household gauge?
A manufacturer’s accuracy specification is not the same as a traceable calibration. NIST describes calibration as comparison against air with accurately known moisture content and offers calibration services for humidity-measuring instruments. Its listed coverage for thermohygrometers—2–98% RH at temperatures from −34 °C to 85 °C—is a calibration-service range, not a recommended range for home use. NIST: Hygrometers
For an ordinary household check, use the gauge’s published specifications and instructions. If a measurement must be traceable or support a technical decision, ask the instrument maker or a qualified calibration provider about calibration appropriate to the device and use.
